Episode 170

ArticleSource revision

My Hero Academia is the one hundred and seventieth episode of the My Hero Academia anime, and the eleventh episode of the eighth season. It was the final episode to be released in its broadcast run, and the penultimate episode overall.

Summary#

After escaping the wreckage of his old house, the ragged boy makes it out into the streets of the restored portion of Japan. Despite being away from the rubble and in a much safer place, just seeing the smiling faces of everyone walking around causes his mind to further deteriorate, as he wonders why his situation had to happen to him alone.

Meanwhile, All Might and Hawks are talking over lunch, with the main point of discussion being the new Hero Public Safety Commission President's desire to expand the Hero Billboard Chart JP once the reconstruction of the country gets to a far enough point in the future. He plans to do this by opening the ranking to not just licensed Heroes, but regular people as well, as they too played a huge role in concluding the Final War.

All Might says he thought the decision would stop and end at scrapping the popularity aspect of the chart, with Hawks saying that would've been the logical move if only the negatives were highlighted. The man wants to keep the system around to uplift its positives and encourage the work of several great Heroes helping everyone, as opposed to building up exclusively Pro Heroes and shouldering all of society's biggest responsibilities on the person who reaches the No. 1 spot.

Back on the street, the boy begins to walk around as several passersby watch him, while the victim's mind relives the day his Quirk manifested, and his life turned for the worst. His Quirk, which causes a misty, dark purple liquid to spill out of his hands and feet, and engulf the surrounding terrain, suddenly manifested in the living room of his home one day. The boy was understandably spooked at the new, uncontrollable change in his body, but what didn't help was the reaction of his family. The women looked at the child with horror, the men with confusion and disbelief, and the oldest man with boiling rage. He yells out that the boy's Quirk can't be found out by the association they're affiliated with, out of fear that it will damage their family's reputation.

With no hesitation, the elder family member orders the family to "get rid of him permanently and leave no evidence behind". The youngest looking man tries to weakly argue that the boy didn't do anything wrong, to which the eldest suggests they hide him instead of killing him since they don't have the spine to do so. The family's choice of compromise ended with them tying up the boy in a tarp and rope, locking him in the basement, sowing his mouth shut so he couldn't scream for help, and acting like their abandoned family member has suddenly died.

As time stretched on to the present, the house would be in shambles and totally abandoned, which gave the chance for the imprisoned boy to escape. As the boy's walking slows down, the goo produced by his Quirk begins to trail behind his feet, as his fear begins to twist into panic and anger. As more of those putrid memories of his family and isolation begin to tear at him more, more slime begins to pour of his hands as he hyperventilates.

However, what could've turned into a much nastier situation is halted suddenly by an elderly woman greeting the boy and tapping him on the shoulder. The boy stops dead in his tracks and look at her, which makes the woman gasp and freeze up.

That woman was the very same who spotted Tenko Shimura wandering the street after he killed his family, who left after being scared by his appearance, and hurriedly claimed that a Hero or police officer will take care of him eventually. While she was dismissive of Tenko back then, the uncertainty of the boy getting the help he needed, which unfortunately never happened unbeknownst to her, ended up haunting her for years.

At the same time this happens, Hawks thinks about the era of proactiveness and resilience Izuku Midoriya showed everybody during his climatic battle with Tomura, and is sure that it got through to everyone that saw it. The man is positive that his dream will be found on the other side, where everyone cares about each other a little more, and Heroes now have plenty of time to kill as a result.

Being inspired by Izuku's fighting, and not wanting to make the same mistake she did with Tenko, the older woman gently grasps the boy's hand and assures him that everything's going to be all right, since she's here to help. Her words and attentiveness calm the boy down, as he starts to cry and other bystanders rush in to help him as well.

Just as this happens, a man across the street just finished rushing over to the scene, along with Izuku and Ochaco who were called over by him. Realizing that the crisis has already been taken care of, the three of them smile in relief, and just as Hawks wishes, the Heroes in this situation now have more time for themselves.

Eight years later, on a beautiful spring afternoon, U.A. High School is as bustling as ever. Kota Izumi, now a teenager and student in the Hero course, along with the imprisoned boy from before, rushes to the staff office to meet someone: Izuku, now grown up and working as their teacher in the school, is currently writing another instalment of his Hero Analysis for the Future notebook, while thinking about the time he thought "all men are not created equal" at the age of four. While it was a depressing reality check when he was little, after the Final War, and once he turned seventeen, he now takes it as a motivator for people to seek common ground with one another and connect.

Kota asks Izuku where they should meet up for an upcoming training exercise, with Izuku telling them the bus stop, and that it will also double as a lesson on how to get to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint. Kota gives his instructor a thumbs up, promising to tell the rest of his class before leaving.

As Izuku continues writing, he thinks about all people that cheered him on during his run towards "All For One". As he cycles through more memories of himself, his loved ones, and the other Pro Heroes growing up and moving on with their lives after that fight, he says that everyone who showed their support at all back then was a great Hero in their own right, as he believes the act of caring is the first step in being one.

Izuku assures that everyone is linked together by shared feelings, and that people will do what they can to create that same closeness to those that feel differently. To him, everyone affected from the terror the Villains brought that day chose to live on knowing that it won't happen again, as they head towards the future that has opened up for them afterward.

Izuku then reminisces on his final years at U.A., with all of Class A's rigorous testing, training, physical rehabilitation, and the quieter moments sandwiched in-between them. Among these events includes All Might continuing to recover alongside Gran Torino, Eri moving in with Kota, Eraser Head and Present Mic paying their respects to Nemuri Kayama and Oboro Shirakumo, Enji and Rei Todoroki continuing to visit Toya, and Spinner releasing a book about The League of Villains, which is read by Mr. Compress.

Finally, the students' high school graduation arrives. After each of the third years received their diplomas, Tenya Ida gave the closing speech. The boy says he knows what allowed them to overcome and grow past the moment when the world was engulfed by the evil: when everyone took each other's hands and lifted each other up, as they moved ahead without losing hope. He ends that the student body should always remember what it means to be a Hero after leaving U.A.

As the class rep chops his hands forwards, the traditional graduation speech crash unfolds, as the background is blasted open by Katsuki Bakugo and Neito Monoma, with the former screaming that the outside world is waiting for them, and latter once again relishing that he's in the spotlight.

While graduation from the Hero course is a joyous time for all, Izuku included, a critical shift in the boy happened by the time of the ceremony: the last remaining embers of One For All died out, leaving the student Quirkless once again. While this would usually be the end of stories like these, with him cherishing his short but fulfilling tenure as both a Hero and someone with a Quirk, Izuku assures the audience that there's still runtime in the episode to fill out.

Back in the present, a middle school teacher is talking to his third-year class after he gave them their career aptitude tests, saying that it's time for them to start thinking about their entrance exams. A boy with red skin says he's shooting for the Hero Course at U.A., though unlike what would be expected years ago, his classmates have different answers besides aiming to be a Pro Hero. One with a fanged jaw wants to get into Support Item engineering and score a job at Lighty Labs, which is the firm where Mei Hatsume now works along with Bibimi Kenranzaki. Another one wants to become a doctor like Dr. Ryu Yoshida and help people with conditions that are deemed incurable. A heteromorphic girl wants to work as a programmer at GeL Inc., a company that was started by Gentle and La Brava, who apparently made history five years ago from their participation in the "Cyber War".

The red-skinned boy then looks at the career form of his classmate, Dai, and loudly calls out the fact that he's gunning for U.A.'s Hero Course, too. He tells Dai that getting into the Hero course with a Quirk like his would be difficult, due to the rate of Villain emergence dropping over the years, meaning that only those with super powerful Quirks have a decent shot of becoming a Hero. Dai winces at his peer's words and crumples his sheet, while dejectedly saying he won't know for sure.

Eventually school lets out, with Dai being left to his own thoughts as he walks through the city. He thinks about the Heroes he and others his age wanted to be like when they were little, like All Might, Deku, Best Jeanist, and Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight. The boy feels that he's the only person whose never grown past his childhood dreams, and soon walks to a place that has always made him feel better when he got anxious: the statue of All Might at Ground Zero of Kamino Ward, the same one he saw on the day he was about to begin first grade.

Meanwhile, the news highlights the recent efforts of the former students of Class A that are now fully fledged Pro Heroes: Tentacole is accepting the Imamura Peace Prize alongside Anima and Plamo, for his tireless work in finding and inspiring peace amid heteromorph discrimination-related issues. Uravity, Creati, Froppy, and Ingenium, are touring elementary schools across the country, as part of Uravity's extensive work in giving Quirk counselling to young children.

At the same time, Eraser Head shows Izuku a recent video a bystander took of Dynamight while he was working, where the Hero yells at the civilian and grabs him by the shirt for getting so close to him. The older teacher notes that this will make his spot on the rankings drop again, and the younger one points out how Eraser Head tried and failed to get his former classmate to watch his mouth when he's out in public. Eraser Head says that this will give a Shoto a massive lead over Katsuki, who is working constantly and has a great relationship with his fanbase. Plus, most people nowadays barely mention his relation to Endeavor.

Izuku giddily praises his friend's diligence and doesn't doubt that he'll overtake the other Heroes that are rivalling or even placed above. Eraser Head, noticing his enthusiasm, asks his co-worker if he misses the Hero life. Izuku, now solemnly smiling, tells his old teacher about the conversation Mawata Fuwa had with Class 2-A on their first day back to school after the war, which made it set in for him that he'll eventually be Quirkless down the line. As he looks to the board on his desk, which features several photos of an old class of his, he tells Eraser Head that it encouraged him to look for other ways to encourage and help others, since he thought it would be pretty cool.

Izuku nervously wonders if he's anywhere close to being cool now, before Eraser Head flatly tells him that he should be stricter with his students. The young man's energy instantly dips, but the older one says it's more important than ever to be that way. Nowadays, the people who get into the Hero Course are almost guaranteed to be a Hero, so they need discipline in order to prevent arrogance from spawning.

Eventually, class ends for U.A., and Izuku too takes a walk through the city. He then spots a display window showing an advertisement for two lines of perfumes and skincare products by Tsukyuomi and Invisible Girl, which reminds the man of how much things have changed since graduation. Ever since joining the work force, it's been harder for each member of Class A to have free time that overlaps, and even rarer for everyone to gather together at once. Regardless, Izuku still enjoys seeing his friends succeed in their career prospects.

As Izuku makes it to Kamino Ward, he spots a jumbotron broadcasting a TV special on Red Riot, as two kids run past him to marvel at his friend doing his Hero work. He stops at the same All Might statue placed in the middle of Ground Zero, as he frequently goes here to think back on his high school days.

Suddenly one of the children from before, Chii, trips while playing with the other. On instinct, Izuku dives forward and outstretches his arms to catch him; at the same time, Dai tries to do the same. Izuku successfully catches Chii on the ground, while Dai trips and falls, dropping two of the saucers he produces with his Quirk. The two boys are thankfully alright, and Chii apologizes to Izuku before the children run off to play again.

Izuku then turns his attention on Dai, who instantly perks back up upon realizing he's seeing the Deku in the flesh. The man just nervously laughs, while handing the middle schooler a handkerchief to clean himself off with. As afternoon shifts to evening, Izuku gets most of Dai's story in regard to his career prospects and his Quirk being weak, with the boy saying he came to this statue in order to make himself feel better.

Dai then meekly asks Izuku if he can be a Hero like him and his associates, with causes the man's eyes to widen, since he sees himself in Dai from back when he was a Quirkless middle schooler who asked the same question to All Might on that rooftop. Although, Izuku just quickly devolves into muttering about the properties and potential of Dai's Quirk, which makes the boy freak out from his behavior despite the words being nothing but praise.

Izuku then quickly gets back on track, reminding himself of the moment All Might told him he can become a Hero. Since his dream became reality back then, now is time to give the same hope to others.

Izuku gently places his hand on Dai's shoulder and assures him that he has nothing to worry about, since he was type of the person to move without thinking in order to help someone. With the statue of All Might looking down at them, which has been expanded to include several figures featuring ordinary people raising their fists like he is, Izuku tells Dai that he too can become a Hero. Dai's eyes sparkle passionately at the legendary Hero's encouragement, as Izuku tells the middle school student to do his best while smiling confidently at him.

The next morning comes, and Izuku walks into school to start another day of teaching. While he admits to missing being a proper Pro Hero, Izuku has no regrets about his current path in life, as even now, he can still inspire and help people with his own actions. As he walks into the gates of his alma matter turned workplace, the story seems to draw to close with everyone moving on with their lives and doing great things in their own right.

However, All Might crushes the ending title card to smithereens with his fist, before gleefully yelling that his successor and co-worker is late for his own class. Izuku is of course marvelled to see his idol, who just got back from an overseas trip, and says he would've met the older man at the airport if he knew he would land back in Japan soon. All Might says he kept his return under wraps, as he has a surprise gift for his protege. Izuku thinks it's a wall scroll, but it's actually something much more special.

All Might hands Izuku a multi-colored, metallic briefcase, which the former No. 1 Hero describes as a product of the data gathered from his fight with All For One eight years ago, and nearly a decade of technological breakthroughs. He tells the young man to use whatever is inside to gather more data for research, though Izuku only comments on how expensive this mystery project must be.

Suddenly, the briefcase begins to whir and unravel, as a slew of mechanical parts begin to spread out into the air. It's not just a simple research tool, but a several year joint engineering endeavor between Mei and All Might's overseas friend, which was fully funded by all of Izuku's former classmates, with Katsuki spearheading the investment. As Izuku looks to his arm, he starts to shiver and tear up. All Might proudly says that he knows his successor still has the instincts to jump in and help someone in need, and just like before when he transferred One For All to him on the beach that day, this briefcase is a gift the young man has earned with his own valiant effort.

The briefcase has created a mechanized gauntlet around Izuku's right arm, which has the same color scheme of his old Costume Zeta. The gift turns out to be a state-of-the-art mechanical Hero suit that was custom made for Izuku, which will allow him to return to active duty as a Hero despite being Quirkless, and relive the childhood dream he thought ended with the passing and extinction of One For All. Izuku tears up and smiles gratefully while looking at the arm of his new costume, thankful that due to the arduous effort of his friends and allies, he now has the chance to live out that fantasy again.

While things have mostly quieted down for Pro Heroes and related professions, that doesn't mean there still aren't problems for them to handle. From his office, on a mostly empty desk, Hawks calls in the notification of a landslide on Warstar Road that's blocking traffic, and requests any available Heroes for assistance.

In the city, Hercules is speeding down the road and comes to a screeching halt, as Izuku exits the passenger seat. Waiting in front of him is the entirety of Class A in their costumes, with Dynamight outstretching his hand and calling for the teacher by his nickname-turned-codename: Deku. Izuku nods confidently at his friends, as All Might looks at them from the driver's side and smiles.

With everyone together and people to save, Deku immediately suits up, and swings high into the sky using artificial versions of Blackwhip and Float, joining the rest of his friends as they take off to deal with the situation at Warstar Road. Deku looks down at the building where he and All Might had their first proper meeting and spots the vestige of Tomura looking up at him. Without saying a word, Tomura smiles at the newly reborn Hero before walking off and fading away, as Izuku does the same and looks back toward his destination.

As the next generation of Heroes, and everyone around them, head towards the open future, now marks the proper end of our story. It's not just a tale chronicling the journey of the world's greatest Hero, or even several of them, but one of people like them lending a helping hand to others wherever they go, for all time.

Anime & Manga Differences#

  • The anime expands on Koki Terumoto's backstory, showing more of his past including the moment his family deemed his Quirk dangerous and later locked him up in the basement. It also shows some of Darkness' function, which seemingly allows the fluid it makes to cover and swallow up objects.
  • The anime cuts most of Koki's narration, which mentioned that his Quirk was a mutation, his family telling him about the fallout of Japan before tossing him supplies and leaving, and the fact that rubble from the fighting created an opening from the basement.
  • The manga mentions that Koki's mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother also began treating him differently. In the anime, only two women are shown in the flashback, which are presumably his mother and grandmother when comparing their appearance to the men, which are all present.
  • The dialogue from his grandfather in the anime also shows that, in addition to him being the first one to suggest disowning his grandson, he advised that the family kill Koki instead of locking him up at first.
  • In the manga, Darkness is only shown to come out of Koki's fingertips. In the anime, the liquid from it is also shown to leak from the soles of his feet.
  • The anime shows Izuku and Ochaco watching the old woman aiding Koki from across the street. The manga shows them watching on the same side of the road.
  • The anime omits Tenya asking if the two are alright at the same time. He's replaced by a civilian that notified them of the disturbance, who later smiles along with them after the situation diffuses.
  • The anime also shows some more civilians noticing and later running to Koki out of concern.
  • At the start of the first timeskip scene, the manga cuts the offscreen conversation at the beginning.
  • Before Izuku talks about him learning that "all men are not created equal" from Episode 1, the anime precedes with a flashback to the same moment he got beat up by Katsuki and his friends before realizing it.
  • In the manga, the people drawn in the right side of Izuku's notebooks appear to be a nonspecific jogger and Hero. In the anime, it depicts both figures as Ingenium. Additionally, his hand is lower on the page, revealing the third drawing to be Edgeshot, along with a grip strength, a baseball, and a hand.
  • The notebook is also much bigger in the anime.
  • The montage of Class A's final years at U.A., as well as the lives of the other characters, is greatly expanded in the anime, and features some minor alterations:
  • Mirko is flying in the streets and is shown alongside Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods in the anime, whereas she's just suiting up alone in the manga.
  • The panel of Endeavor with the Sidekickers is replaced with a new moment of Endeavor and Rei continuing to talk to Toya.
  • When Mandalay and Ragdoll see Eri and Kota off at the doorway, the anime precedes it with a short scene of the boy presenting the girl with his hand before she takes it.
  • The children's clothes are also slightly redesigned in the anime.
  • The anime makes it more explicit that the grave Eraser Head and Present Mic visit is Oboro's, with added purple flowers to allude to Midnight.
  • Present Mic is shown cheering on the kids when they're taking their test in the anime.
  • All of Class A are shown jogging together in the anime. Additionally, they mention that they're training to get their proper Hero license.
  • The cameos from Tetsutetsu and Togaru are omitted from the anime.
  • When Katsuki is being cheered on during his rehabilitation, the anime adds him yelling at his classmates to shut up.
  • The moment where Melissa reunites with the class is omitted from the anime.
  • The anime shows several people seeing Spinner's The League of Villains book on sale and contemplating buying it. The stack is also accompanied by a label stating its a popular release.
  • The conversation between Izuku and Ochaco during winter is shown in the anime, with the two talking about their graduation three months from now and discussing their plans afterwards, with both confirming they're set in stone and hasn't changed.
  • Fumikage hanging out with Hawks is omitted in the anime.
  • The full third year U.A. graduation, including Tenya's speech, each of Class A receiving their diploma, and the staff's reactions, is included in the anime.
  • When Neito and Katsuki crash the stage, the anime adds dialogue for the two and shows the other students' reactions.
  • Before the shot of the final embers of One For All disappear, the anime precedes with a scene of Class A leaving the school for the final time.
  • Dai's career aptitude test is shown in the anime and shows that he picked U.A. as his first choice of high school for the Hero Course.
  • When Dai is walking through the city, the anime adds some billboards featuring Astro and Gang Orca.
  • When Mezo receives the Imamura Peace Prize, in the anime he removes his mask to give his speech, while in the manga he remains masked.
  • More of Ochaco's Quirk Counselling session is shown in the anime.
  • The anime extends the cellphone footage of Katsuki and shows him grabbing the shirt of the phone's owner.
  • When Eraser Head talks about Shoto, the anime shows various newspapers of his heroic exploits.
  • Visuals of the Heroes are shown when Izuku talks about their placements in the Hero Billboard Chart in the anime.
  • When Eraser Head talks to Izuku about being strict with his class, the anime interlaces it with a class doing the ball throw from the Quirk Apprehension Test.
  • The advertisement featuring Toru shows her visible appearance in the anime, instead of just her outline in the manga.
  • The anime also features more perfume and skincare products in the display window.
  • The reveal of the true nature of Izuku's gift is extended in the anime.
  • The anime shows the right arm of the suit materializing around Izuku as he's tearing up from the gift and All Might's words.
  • The anime precedes the scene of Deku meeting back up with his class with a short transition of him and All Might driving into the city with Hercules.
  • The scene of Hawks requesting help also precedes this in the anime, while in the manga its shown after Deku meets up with his class again.
  • In the manga, Dynamight is the only student shown when he reaches out for Deku. In the anime, the entirety of Class A is behind him as he does.
  • The anime extends the final group shot of Class A into a new scene of them taking off into the sky.
  • Toru's new costume and visible adult appearance is also revealed here, when it was initially shown off in the Ultra Artworks book.
  • The anime also shows Deku suiting up, and showing off the artificial versions of Blackwhip and Float.
  • In the manga, Tomura's spirit looks at Izuku from the ground; in the anime he is moved to the building where Izuku and All Might properly talked for the first time. Also in the manga, he was just shown looking at Izuku, while the anime shows him walking away and disappearing.
  • In the credits, the anime shows a montage detailing more of Class A's Hero careers and lives, which pulls from various sources:
  • The following was originally stated in Chapter 431:
  • Toru going independent and recruiting Yuga, who later became a Hero, as a Sidekick.
  • Ochaco and Tsuyu frequently teaming up to do Quirk counselling.
  • Koji working as Mezo's Sidekick.
  • Kyoka and Denki having hero agencies next to each other, due to Denki being anxious going independent on his own.
  • The following was originally stated in Ultra Age: The Final Fanbook:
  • Toru's face becoming visible on duty, which gained her public attention.
  • The anime also shows it took place during a Christmas event, with her reflecting a massive amount of light on top of a Christmas tree.

  • Katsuki is shown hanging out with Best Jeanist and a mostly recovered Edgeshot.
  • One of Izuku's classes at U.A. involves the students mingling with the younger kids.

Trivia#

  • The billboards seen on the street featuring Gang Orca and Astro act as a dual reference to Kohei Horikoshi's previous two works, Oumagadoki Zoo and Barrage, which both characters appeared in.
  • The final scene of Class A taking off references a similar scene of them in THE DAY's opening animation, and the group shot of the class springing into action from Chapter 431.
