Koji Koda

ArticleSynopsisRelationshipsSource revision

Koji Koda, also known as the Petting Hero: Anima, was a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, training to become a Pro Hero.

Eight years later, Koji has graduated from U.A. alongside his classmates, becoming a Hero as a Sidekick to Tentacole.[2][4]

Appearance#

Koji is a tall young man of a broad, muscular build with peach-colored skin. His head takes the form of a rock, which is unevenly shaped and pointed at the top of his head, and his jaw is square-shaped. From the back of his head, thick hair-like protrusions slope downwards.

At U.A., he wears the standard male uniform: a light gray blazer with dark turquoise trimmings over a white dress shirt, dark blue-green dress pants, a red tie, and plain brown shoes.

His Hero Costume is a tight yellow suit, only reaching to his knees and under the elbows, with a large red marking over his torso and at the ends of his sleeves. On his chest, there's a symbol resembling an open mouth, and he wears yellow shoes with red accents.

In preparation for the Provisional Hero License Exam, Koji added two white straps over his shoulders and wears a mask that covers his entire face that resembles a duck's bill, with holes above over his mouth so his voice still can be heard when he's using his Quirk. His shoes were swapped out in favor of yellow boots with white accents.

Following his Quirk Awakening during the Final War, the tip of Koji's head becomes much more prominent, forming multiple horns resembling spiky rocks. These horns resemble those of his mother.

Eight years after the end of the Final War, Koji has grown taller, and his horns having grown longer. His costume remains mostly the same, but now wears a yellow jacket instead of the two white straps over his shoulders, slightly different shoes, a brown belt with a gray kitty buckle, and a black domino-like mask.

Personality#

Contrary to his powerful and brutish appearance, Koji is timid and quiet. As such, he rarely speaks and prefers using sign language to communicate with his classmates, so much so that Kyoka Jiro assumed that he was mute and was greatly surprised when Koji spoke. According to Fumikage Tokoyami, he is very good at keeping secrets. He also hates violence due to his kind-hearted nature.

He appears to enjoy the company of animals, even owning a small rabbit as a pet. With his Quirk, Anivoice Koji can interact with them in ways others can't. He also owns a few animal dolls and decorations in his room, implying he likes cute things.

Koji suffers from entomophobia, being deathly afraid of bugs, with the mere sight of them making him scream and run away in fear. However, Koji is capable of putting this fear aside if it means helping his comrades, as was shown during the Joint Training Battle when he attempted to use bugs alongside Eijiro Kirishima to take down Jurota Shishida.

Throughout his time at U.A., Koji has gradually grown out of his initially meek nature, becoming a bit more vocal and aiding his classmates with hero work. During the Final War, alongside Mezo Shoji, Koji was determined to put a stop to the heteromorphs raiding Central Hospital. At the height of the conflict, Koji showed a rare instance of anger towards Takaie Kanigumo for attempting to provoke Mezo, causing his Quirk to awaken. It is revealed here that Koji was inspired by his father, who encouraged him not to back down when people made fun of those who are close to him.[5]

Abilities#

Overall Abilities: Thanks to his handling of his Quirk, Anivoice, Koji is a rather versatile hero due to the diversity of abilities within the animal kingdom. For example, bugs can perform sneak attacks from underground thanks to their small size and burrowing capabilities; birds are helpful for reconnaissance because they are flying creatures with excellent eyesight, etc. And despite Koji's generally shy nature, he can work very fluidly in a team of humans and animals, showcasing his multifaceted camaraderie.

Koji's control over animals proved vital and successful in various situations such as the First Term Final Exam, wherein he and Kyoka were pitted against Present Mic, as well as the first stage of the Provisional Hero License Exam, in which he used a large flock of birds to swarm numerous students from rival schools. During the first round of the Joint Training Battle, Koji and Eijiro launched a collaboration attack on Jurota Shishida of Class 1-B that forced the latter into evading the said assault, implying their combined onslaught would've been effective against someone of his caliber. Soon after, Jurota dubbed Koji as troublesome due to the Petting Hero's abilities, so the feral student decided to capture him first. On Nabu Island, Koji used his control of birds to help Mezo rescue Mahoro and Katsuma Shimano from Nine. His abilities eventually garnered the attention of Wash, allowing Koji to intern under the No. 8 Pro Hero and improve his communication skills.

  • Enhanced Strength: Koji, befitting his bulky stature, possesses a fair amount of physical strength. During the Joint Training Battle, Koji was restrained and hauled away by a Beast-transformed Jurota Shishida, but his struggle made it difficult for Jurota despite the latter's incredibly augmented strength, displaying that Koji is much stronger than he looks.
  • Animal Telepathy: Due to his horns' sudden growth during the Final War, Koji can now telepathically communicate his thoughts and feelings to animals further than he could with his voice.

Quirk#

Anivoice: Anima's Quirk gives him the ability to command any creature in the animal kingdom by speaking to them. Whatever command he gives, the animal will carry it out. However, he cannot exert control if they cannot hear his command. The target must also be a real animal and not merely animal-like. Koji can also exchange information with the animals to find the locations of various people and potential enemies faster.

Koji has been shown to use the Quirk effectively with flocks of birds to create a smokescreen of animals and to attack an opponent, along with his use of insects to distract and attack his opponents. He has now also overcome his fear of bugs, so he often uses bugs to swarm opponents with numbers.

As part of his training, Koji engaged in vocal exercises to increase the range of his Anivoice, allowing him to control animals from long distances.

Following his Quirk Awakening in the Final War, Koji can now communicate his thoughts and feelings to animals without using his voice, thanks to his new horns acting as a telepathic conduit.

Ultimate Moves#

  • Bugging Out:[3] Koji summons swarms of bugs to overwhelm his opponents.[6]
  • Hitchcock Birds:[3] Koji summons a swarm of birds to provide a distraction or hinder vision.[7] Koji also uses this move offensively.[8]
