Dabi

This article is about Shoto Todoroki's older brother. For the Eight Bullets' member of the Shie Hassaikai, see Toya Setsuno.

Dabi, real name Toya Todoroki, was one of the main antagonists in My Hero Academia.

He was the eldest son of Rei Todoroki and the Pro Hero Endeavor, with his younger siblings being Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto. Dabi was driven insane due to Enji's neglectful and selfish actions, becoming a Villain to enact revenge. He became affiliated with the League of Villains, a former member of the organization's since disbanded Vanguard Action Squad, and later one of the nine lieutenants of the Paranormal Liberation Front.

Appearance#

Dabi was a reasonably tall, pale young man of slim shape but somewhat muscular build, described to be in his early twenties. He had spiky white hair that didn't pass his neck, and bangs that hung low over his eyes, which were thin, turquoise, and heavily lidded. Dabi's hair was dyed black before revealing his true identity.

As a child, Toya had a round face and unruly crimson hair spiked up in tufts around his head, falling down his forehead in uneven bangs, though due to inheriting his mother's genes, his hair slowly turned white as he grew older.[3] He wore a plain gakuran jacket and usually wore a neutral expression, as shown in a few of his family's photos.[4] Due to his premature birth, he was shorter than his two younger siblings, Fuyumi and Natsuo, though it wasn't until after his growth spurt did Toya become around the same height as them.

After losing control of his Quirk and waking up from three years comatose, Toya had grown taller, and his hair had become spikier, with him now resembling more of his appearance as an adult. Toya's burn scars were also present, with the missing parts of his body having to be replaced by regenerative tissue, although they were not as severe as they are now, and not yet attached to his skin via piercings.[5]

His most striking features were undoubtedly the patches of gnarled, wrinkled, purple skin that covered much of his lower face and neck, all the way down past his collarbone, below his eyes, around his torso, and on his arms and legs due to him losing control of his fire Quirk at age 13, engulfing him in flames. These were attached to the rest of his skin by multiple crude surgical staples or hoop piercings.

He had several silver (gold in the manga) cartilage piercings in both ears and a triple nostril piercing on the right side of his nose. Upon closer inspection, he also lacked earlobes on both sides of his ears. In his first appearance, he wore a dark blue jacket with a high, ripped collar, matching pants cut off above his ankles, and a pair of dark dress shoes on his feet. He also had a plain white, scoop-neck shirt, below which a gray belt with a circular pattern wraps around his waist, and a brown leather satchel attached at the back.

Upon joining the Vanguard Action Squad, Dabi's apparel was updated, now consisting of a large dark blue knee-length overcoat with two large metal cuffs at the end of each elbow-length sleeve and a white stitch design on each of his shoulders; the coat had three ripped hems, granting the appearance of four coattails. His shirt and belt stayed the same, but he replaced his pants with a larger pair of a darker color, and his shoes with black boots.

Around the time of the formation of the Paranormal Liberation Front, Dabi acquired a new outfit to complete his status as one of the nine lieutenants of the organization. Dabi wore a long dark blue coat with white cuffs, similar to his previous look, albeit the ends of the coat are not tattered. In addition, he donned a white V-necked shirt with white outlines. The stitches extended not only to his shoulder pads but also to the kneecaps of his pants. The only things he retained are his silver belt (brown in the manga), black boots, and his dark-colored pants. He also had three buttons on both sides of his coat.

Following the Paranormal Liberation War, Dabi retains his white hair color, and his burns extended to his hands and cheekbones due to overusing his Quirk during his confrontation with Endeavor and Shoto. By the time of the Final War, Dabi donned a new outfit, Death Flame,[6] that resembled traditional Japanese burial clothing. It had a tattered overcoat, boots, and pants that were all white in color, with bracers on the sleeves and a white belt (brown in the manga) on his waist. His new outfit also lacked a shirt underneath. During the war as Dabi continued to push the heat of his flames, this outfit was gradually burned off.

As Dabi continued to use his Quirk wildly, his body burned away even more. The already burned flesh around the right side of his face crumbles and falls off, leaving him greatly disfigured. A portion of his jaw, teeth, muscles, and tendons were visible, and his burns continued to spread around his face.[7][5] As his fire raged on, Dabi's body showed his bones and tendons from other parts of his body.[8] In his fight against Endeavor, Dabi purposefully exploded his right arm as he attacked his father. In addition to this, his eyes were completely consumed within his flames, and cracks of fire began to appear along his body as it started to explode.[9] After his explosion was stopped by his family's ice, Dabi had been reduced to a barely alive skeletal state with most of his flesh having been burned off, and his burned skull and empty eye sockets visible. His body also began freezing from the inside out.[10]

Following the Final War, Dabi had been fully contained inside a life support system with his entire body bound and bandaged inside. The only parts of him visible were his eyes, which were somehow restored, and his jaw, which lacked skin and was held together entirely by exposed muscle.[11]

Personality#

Toya was very energetic and boisterous as a child, and he wanted to learn as much as he could from his father. Because his father, Enji, had emphasized that he would be the one to surpass All Might since childhood, Toya became obsessed with fulfilling that dream, becoming just as stubborn as his father to become the next number one hero. Toya was not unmotivated upon learning that his body could not safely handle his flames, becoming upset and frustrated when his father refused to train him anymore.

Despite Enji telling him to focus on something else and find a new goal to pursue, Toya was insistent that he could still live up to his father's dream and continued to train on his own, burning himself in the process. Toya described his goal as a fire that his father lit within him that would not go out and that he could not bring himself to ignore, highlighting how his childhood dream became an unhealthy obsession. However, Rei believed that Toya just wanted his father's attention and proof that he wasn't a failure, something that became more apparent following the birth of Shoto, who had inherited the Quirk and strength that Toya lacked.

Toya's obsession would go on to make him further unstable, not caring about the damage his Quirk training was doing to his own body while shrugging off concerns from his sister and mother, saying that his younger siblings lived in a different world than him. At one point, Toya even lashed out and attacked his mother and an infant Shoto with his Quirk when his father refused to look at him, leading to Enji's decision to raise Shoto away from his siblings. Being aware of the Quirk Marriage of his parents, Toya grew bitter towards his mother when she tried to stop him from training, shouting at her for being sold by her parents and claiming that she held just as much responsibility as Enji for why he was born, words that shook Rei to her core.

Despite this, he wasn't completely callous towards his family as he had a reasonably good relationship with Fuyumi and Natsuo while growing up. He also did express regret for trying to attack Shoto and for the scathing words that he threw at his mother, making it clear that Toya still loved his family and held remorse for how he treated them. Even so, these feelings were overshadowed by his longing for his father's attention.

After feeling abandoned by Enji, who became focused on training Shoto while neglecting the rest of his children, Toya fell further into despair and would cry out of frustration every night, wondering why he was even born. Nevertheless, he continued to train his Quirk despite the harm he would suffer, hoping to surpass Shoto and gain his father's approval. Toya even cried out of pure happiness when he saw his Quirk evolve and his flames become stronger. However, when his father didn't meet with him to see this discovery, Toya broke down emotionally and lost control of his flames, which nearly burned him to death.

Even after surviving and waking up from 3 years comatose, however, Toya still went home and wanted to see his father again, yet also desired to make amends with his family and apologize for everything he did. After seeing that nothing had changed and that Enji was still obsessed with training Shoto to become his successor, Toya psychologically broke, taking this action that all he ever was to his father was a failure that he discarded. This mental breakdown caused Toya to completely abandon his old self and become Dabi, a murderous and pyromaniacal villain obsessed with ruining his father's reputation and paying him back for all the suffering he went through.[5]

After renaming himself Dabi, he became a stoic, aloof, confident, and focused individual who rarely showed emotion. While rather crude and violent, he was also cautious and observant, choosing to retreat when Mirko arrived to aid Endeavor and made sure not to divulge too much information to Hawks about High-End because of the infancy of their relationship.[12] Overall, Dabi was a highly enigmatic individual who trusted no one, preferring to do things alone and in his own way. He also gave off the impression of knowing more about certain people than he let on.

Despite his usual expressionless behavior, Dabi found joy in establishing himself as a villain fighting what he believed to be false heroes, an ideology proposed by his apparent inspiration, Stain. Dabi was dedicated to Stain's mission and desires to destroy superhuman society, sharing his belief that one person with the necessary conviction can do so.[13] He had shown to share Stain's sentiment that heroes are hypocritical and unworthy of their title, but unlike Stain, did not seek a society with better heroes, believing that true heroes don't exist. Despite his alleged devotion to the Hero Killer's creed, Dabi did many things that Stain would not, such as attacking innocent bystanders and helping the League get revenge against Overhaul, while also being motivated by his vengeance against Endeavor. In the end, Dabi only used Stain's ideals to cover his motives and justify his crimes against the hero society.

Dabi took pleasure in taunting heroic figures, students, and Pro Heroes alike, sadistically enjoying the pain he inflicted on others, including those he murdered.[14] Sometimes, Dabi engaged in psychological warfare to unnerve whoever his opponent was while also allowing himself to cool down from his Quirk's effects. Very pragmatic in battle, he was savvy about how heroes operate and would exploit their natural tendency to rescue others. He was not afraid of causing collateral destruction, rarely holding back, even if it put his allies at risk. Dabi was intolerant of most people and could be very derisive, rude, and condescending to everyone he met. He insulted Tomura Shigaraki immediately after meeting him and constantly did the same to his allies and enemies, but didn't always do it with the intention of being rude. While the League went on to develop a strong sense of camaraderie, Dabi remained distant from them for the most part. He later admitted that he didn't care for Tomura or the rest of the League and that the value he places on them came mostly from their ability to bring his ambitions into reality. This selfish way of thinking established Dabi as an extreme sociopath.

Dabi appeared to show no remorse for his actions at all, even gloating towards Snatch upon hearing that news of his murdered victims had spread before killing the Sand Hero. Still, the latter's words appeared to have resonated with him, with Dabi later saying that he thought about them so much it drove him insane while crying a tear of blood, implying that Dabi remembered his own family and how they moved on from him after he nearly died.

However, Dabi displayed some semblance of kindness when he burned down Himiko Toga's old family home while she was feeling distraught over it, though he claimed he only did it to twist the knife for the heroes. Despite admitting that he held no care for the other League members, he did encourage Twice to do his best for the League during the war, even hi-fiving him as he ran out to join the battle and took the time to encourage Himiko that they should continue fighting for their cause. This motivational aspect showed that Dabi cared enough about his allies to support their morale when needed, even if only for pragmatic and self-serving purposes.

Following the reveal of his identity and his broadcast revealing his childhood, Dabi unveiled his far more sadistic and unhinged side, expressing a maddened and gleeful expression upon confronting his father and youngest brother. With his sadism and vengeance fully renewed, Dabi thoroughly relished any pain he was able to cause Endeavor, shown when he attacked Nejire Chan with his Quirk and gloated that Endeavor's flames had burned another child's future.

His broadcast also revealed his steadfast belief about heroes: that they use their good actions to hide and justify all their sins and use the public's admiration of them to keep it that way. He ridiculed his father for believing that he could atone for his past abuse of his family and his attempts to change into a better person and did the same when revealing Hawks' father to be a serial criminal who the Flame Hero caught. Although he had previously discarded his birth name, he resumed using it after his battle with his father.

Dabi was also aware of his madness and wasn't against the idea of suicide if it could kill his father or hurt him more, as seen when Dabi attempted to immolate both himself and Shoto in the War.[15] He also expressed how he couldn't feel anything anymore, not even towards his family, further cementing Dabi's apathy and showing how far he had fallen from the ambitious child who wanted his father's attention. He later confirmed to Shoto that he was fully intending to go down while taking out Endeavor, knowing that his vengeance would lead him to death from the start and that killing his father while destroying everything he holds dear would be how he left his mark on the world.[5]

Upon confronting his father again in the Final War, Dabi intended to use his Quirk to self-destruct and destroy everything around him. As a result of this, Dabi's loss of sanity caused him to regress back to his childhood thoughts before he started to explode, as seen when he yelled at his father to look at him like he did when he was a child, having completely lost himself to his desire for vengeance.[9]

However, after being confronted by Rei, Fuyumi, and Natsuo, who all use their ice Quirks in an effort to cool him down and stop his explosion, Dabi did internally show some happiness at seeing his family again, even imagining them all (minus Shoto) being together and happy, while gathering around a grown and happy version of Toya. This implies that Dabi wasn't as far gone as he previously claimed, seeing how everyone, including his father, was watching him just as he always wanted and wondered why it couldn't have happened sooner. After being stopped and finally defeated by Shoto however, Dabi reverted back to his hateful disposition, saying that his whole family, including himself, should just die.[10]

Following the Final War, Dabi was kept in a life support device at Central Hospital, being maintained in a fragile state of life where he was slowly dying and only capable of speaking for a few minutes each day. While being visited by his family, he casually mocks them and his own state while also rejecting his father's words, calling him a coward and telling him not to bother after everything that's happened. However, he fell quiet upon hearing his family's words and that they intended to continue visiting him and was genuinely moved to tears as a result.

At the end of the visit, Dabi answered Shoto's question that his favorite food was soba. After recalling how Shoto refused his statement that they would never be together, Dabi finally showed remorse for his actions upon seeing how his family still refuses to give up on him (just as Shoto promised), and crying as he apologized to his younger brother, realizing that they truly were similar and that he pushed Shoto away instead of trying to bond with him.[16]

Overall, the neglect Toya had received, paired with his refusal to stop chasing his father, had caused him to devolve from a bright and ambitious boy who wanted to be a hero, to a bitter, vengeful, and destructive villain. Even Natsuo said that had his family, especially Enji, given Toya the help he needed, Dabi would have never come to be. To add to this irony, Dabi completed what he set out to do, having ruined the career and reputation of the hero he once looked up to, and later injuring his father so badly that he had to retire. Nevertheless, Dabi showed multiple times that he hadn't completely lost his humanity, nor had he forgotten about his family, even being momentarily happy upon seeing them again and later having remorse for the harm he caused Shoto.

Abilities#

Overall Abilities: Having been trained by his father, Endeavor, at a young age and undergoing rigorous self-training, Dabi had proven to be a powerful villain, one of the most vital members of the League of Villains' Vanguard Action Squad, as well as its de facto leader. After joining the League, Dabi killed over thirty people, garnering a reputation as a dangerous criminal and a mass murderer. Dabi had a practical handle on his powerful yet hazardous Quirk, which not only granted him control over his self-generated blue flames that were stronger than normal flames (which increase in temperature due to his hatred towards his father) but also proficient wide-range capabilities.

Dabi primarily fought from a distance, shooting fireballs, generating flamethrower attacks, and releasing bursts of fire at close range. His primary offense was using the brute force of his Quirk to overwhelm his enemies. Defensively, Dabi could burn away attacks and even generate massive firewalls to surround his targets. With this skill and power, he could incinerate an entire group of opponents in seconds. Overall, Dabi had the capacity and ingenuity to contend with many adversaries who outnumbered him.

The immense capabilities of Dabi's Quirk allowed him to repel the Bakugo Escort squad during the Vanguard Action Squad Invasion, fight off multiple Meta Liberation Army members and emerge unscathed, as well as extensively fight on par with Geten, one of the MLA's strongest members.[17][18] He even completely overpowered Hawks, the No. 2 Hero, primarily due to pyrokinetic Quirks being a significant weakness to Hawks' Fierce Wings. These feats are even more impressive as Dabi never relied on his Flashfire techniques in these encounters.

Dabi's Quirk finesse also enabled him to fly and hover in the air, much like his father and youngest brother. In the Paranormal Liberation War, Dabi began utilizing his father's Flashfire Fist techniques in combat and was able to burn through Best Jeanist's Carbon Fibers instantaneously, overpower Nejire Hado of U.A's Big 3 members, and dominated Shoto, who was also using Flashfire Fist, in a battle of flames. The disparity in their abilities was so great Dabi could hold back and defeat Shoto with a single Jet Burn without killing him.

During the Final War, Dabi used his Quirk at its maximum potential, posing a significant threat to the Heroes and, later, himself. In his rematch with Shoto, Dabi started frequently utilizing "Flashfire Fist" techniques but to little avail, as Shoto's newly acquired "Phosphor" ability enabled the Todoroki brothers to fight on even ground until Shoto successfully dominated Dabi with his new Ultimate Move, Great Glacial Aegir. Unexpectedly, however, Dabi underwent a tremendous change in power, similar to an Awakening, manifesting the ice capabilities of his mother's Frost Quirk, which was then used in conjunction with Dabi's Blueflame Quirk to reproduce Shoto's "Phosphor" Ultimate move, ultimately rejuvenating himself.

Afterward, Dabi was transported away to the Gunga Mountain Villa Ruins to confront Endeavor, wherein the villain overpowered his father and continued to push his body to the limit, building up internal heat that was estimated to cause a self-destructive explosion with a blast radius of 5 kilometers (3 miles). The pending explosion was temporarily routed by the timely arrival of the other Todoroki family members: Rei, Fuyumi, and Natsuo. It took the combined ice Quirks of the latter three as well as Shoto's Phosphor-empowered Great Glacial Aegir to freeze over Dabi's inferno and defeat him for good, with Shoto admitting that he might not have been able to do it without his mother and siblings' help.

  • Pain Immunity: As told by Kyudai Garaki, Dabi's immolation as a child had caused severe damage to his body and nervous system, to the point where it was now difficult for his body to detect pain. This pain insensitivity was shown when a clone of Dabi barely reacts to Eraser Head breaking one of his arms. This condition allowed Dabi to use his Quirk freely and ignore the potentially fatal burns it inflicted on his body, allowing Dabi to persist even when his body began to burn away.[7][5]
  • Enhanced Durability: Despite his charred body, Dabi was fairly resilient. A noteworthy feat is that he survived being completely incinerated by his flames and spent three years comatose. Kyudai Garaki even found it amazing that Dabi could live into adulthood, despite only being given a month to live with his burned and ruined body.[5]
  • Cold Resistance: Dabi's physical constitution that he inherited from his mother gave him resistance to extremely cold temperatures. While this trait made his own body sensitive to heat, it gave Dabi an advantage during his fights with Geten and Shoto, who utilized ice-based attacks.
  • Eidetic Memory: Dabi possessed a uniquely keen eyesight that enabled him to copy any moves he sees fit to his needs without requiring special training. Having watched Endeavor over the years, Dabi was able to copy and utilize some of Endeavor's most powerful Ultimate Moves. Dabi's eidetic abilities were proficient enough for him to memorize and copy Shoto's "Phosphor", a technique that took Shoto several months of training to craft.

Keen Intellect: Dabi possessed good judgment and was very keen and observant of everything around him, whether reading someone's intentions or weaknesses. Dabi was also known for psychologically engaging enemies, questioning their motives and morality during combat. Trench warfare is an entirely tactical maneuver for buying time since it compliments Dabi's weakness of his flames hurting his body over time. When he first met Tomura Shigaraki, the pyrokinetic easily identified Tomura's personality instability. During the Vanguard Action Squad Invasion, he formed a plan having clones of himself, created by Twice, distract Eraser Head and Vlad King while simultaneously using his flames to trap numerous U.A. students in the The Beast's Forest. Dabi's machinations may have resulted in the Vanguard Action Squad suffering three casualties, but they ultimately accomplished the objective of capturing Katsuki Bakugo. In the course of the forest incursion, one of Dabi's clones saw through Eraser Head's stoic nature with just a glance. After the League captured Katsuki, Tomura wanted Dabi to remove Katsuki's restraints, but Dabi refused, knowing Katsuki would initiate a surprise attack once released, which was proven true after Twice removed Katsuki's restraints.

While battling Snatch on a highway, Dabi quickly deduced and exploited the limits of the Sand Hero's Quirk. With this exploitation and Mr. Compress' aid, Dabi expressed that the lingering flames would kill the compressed Snatch since the Pro Hero can only turn his upper body into sand. Once the Revival Festival was underway, wherein Geten ambushed him, Dabi, with a glimpse, assessed that the ice wielder was a strong adversary before their bout commenced. While overpowering Hawks at Gunga Mountain Villa, Dabi revealed that he had suspected the Wing Hero of being the P.L.F. traitor, so he chose not to trust Hawks the whole time they were acquainted. To ensure Twice's escape and knowing that he cannot contend with Hawks' speed, Dabi threw Hawks off-balance by announcing the hero's civilian name: Keigo Takami, despite that being classified information. Following Tsukuyomi's intervention, Dabi knew that the Jet-Black Hero would try to make a swift escape, so he intentionally waned the potency of his blaze attacks to have enough energy for his new jet propulsion ability.

Dabi's most impactful form of guerilla warfare was when he had his pre-recorded backstory uploaded by Skeptic to be globally broadcasted while simultaneously revealing his true identity as Toya Todoroki to Endeavor and Shoto - with the video even including D.N.A. results that confirmed he is of Endeavor's blood. Other than explaining his abusive childhood, kinship to Endeavor, and Endeavor's ambitions, Dabi also confessed to orchestrating his father's encounters with Hood, Starservant, and Ending in his attempts to discredit his father, a fact that sent Shoto into a tearful rage. Another nail in the coffin was Dabi divulging a part of Hawks' history regarding the Wing Hero being both the son of a serial criminal, Takami, who Endeavor previously apprehended, and the one responsible for the deaths of Twice and Best Jeanist, as murder is an act that heroes don't commonly perform. These revelations were implemented to instill despair into Endeavor and strip people of their faith in heroes, both of which were successful.

Indomitable Will: Dabi possessed an exceptional level of willpower, equal to, if not surpassing that of Endeavor's. As a child, Toya was said to have inherited his father's stubbornness, continuing to train his Quirk on his own and shrugging off the pain it caused his heat sensitive body. Even after burning himself repeatedly, Toya held on to his ardent desire to become a hero and make his father proud of him, causing him to turn away the concern of his other family members and later reject All For One's offer of bringing his Quirk back to its original strength. After surviving his near-death experience and becoming Dabi, he continued to train his flames, being fuelled by his newfound hatred of his father, which grew stronger every time Endeavor was praised for his hero work. Even when Kyudai stated that he was expected to live no longer than a month with the damage done to his body, Dabi continued to live as he plotted revenge against Endeavor, with the doctor later realizing that his burning hatred towards his father was the only thing that had kept him alive for so long. Kyudai remarked that All For One himself could not manipulate young Toya, with the latter becoming a destructive and suicidal villain who was hellbent on acquiring vengeance.

After seemingly being defeated by Shoto in the Final War, Dabi managed to replicate his youngest brother's Phosphor technique, freeing himself from Shoto's ice and continuing his rampage up until encountering his father and the rest of his family. Even after sustaining fatal burns and being reduced to a skeletal state when his explosion was stopped, Dabi still clung onto life, continuing to vent his hatred towards his family.

Quirk#

Blueflame: Dabi's Quirk granted him the ability to generate and control highly destructive blue flames from his body. Originally orange and red, his Quirk turned blue after going through a growth spurt. He had very well-developed control of his flames and could unleash them far from himself and in large amounts. Furthermore, his flames possessed greater firepower than his father, Endeavor's, Hellflame Quirk, and they became even stronger when Dabi felt strong emotions, especially anger and hatred.[2] However, Dabi's body had a low tolerance for his own flames due to him inheriting his mother's constitution, which gave his body resistance to freezing temperatures. While he did have partial resistance to fire, it's not enough to make proper use of his Quirk.[19] As a result, he would get burned if he used them for prolonged periods and severely limited his endurance, with the highest temperature of his flames being fatal.[3]

After being defeated in his second battle against Shoto, Blueflame's power increased, resulting in it manifesting the ice from his mother's Quirk, Frost, within itself. This power-up was described as something "different" to a Quirk Awakening, a burst of power that emerged when he was on the verge of death in an effort to help him survive his intense burns.[9]

Ultimate Moves#

  • Flashfire Fist: Endeavor's signature technique, later passed down to Dabi himself. Dabi raised his fire's temperature to its highest level, maximizing his power. Doing so, Dabi could unleash devastating flame attacks or increase his speed dramatically.
  • Hell Spider: Dabi shot streams of fire from his fingertips, scorching his opponents. Unlike his father, Dabi performed this with less care and precision and on a larger scale.[20]
  • Jet Burn: This attack allowed Dabi to shoot out a blast of fire at his desired target. This attack was quite powerful, as it was shown to wound Shoto, knocking him unconscious critically. Dabi used the move against his youngest brother during the war against the Paranormal Liberation Front. Unlike his father, Dabi only shot his fire rather than making direct contact with his opponent.[21] However, during the Final War, Dabi used it again against Shoto, this time in a punching form, similar to his father.[20]
  • Prominence Burn: This attack allowed Dabi to launch a massive, concentrated beam of fire from his entire body that can vaporize his target. Dabi nearly used this move at full power against Endeavor but was intercepted by the sudden arrival of Best Jeanist on the battlefield. With this move, Dabi reached the peak of speed and temperature.[22]
  • Phosphor: Dabi copied Shoto's Ultimate Move, originally designed to combine his fire and ice into one attack, and instead uses it to reinvigorate himself and his flames after attempting to be cooled down by Shoto.[23]
  • Hell Minefield: Dabi used his Blueflame to push his flames underground, causing pillars of flame to surge out of the ground, burning anything in the way.[24]
  • Vanishing Fist: Dabi created a giant fist of fire and then launches it at an opponent. Dabi exploded his right arm to perform this Ultimate Move.[9]

  • In the Season 2 opening, "Singin' to the Sky" by Amazarashi, Dabi was shown as a silhouette, foreshadowing his appearance to come.
  • According to Dabi's Volume 25 profile:
  • His new costume is flame-retardant and manufactured by Detnerat.
  • The cuffs on his coat were inspired by gas burners, with Kohei Horikoshi coming up with the design element after making instant noodles one day.
  • In early drafts for his Death Flame costume, Dabi's outfit resembled Jedi tunics and Luke Skywalker's farming outfit from the Star Wars franchise, with Horikoshi alluding to it by noting the character "looks like he should be holding a lightsaber".[6]
  • Dabi favored his left-hand in battle.
  • Dabi got carsick easily, as he stated to Spinner when the latter was not driving properly.[14]
  • According to Dabi's Ultra Analysis profile:
  • He doesn't hesitate to burn anyone he disagrees with to a crisp, be they friend or foe.
  • Prior to the Paranormal Liberation War, Dabi kept his real name and motives hidden from everyone, including his fellow League members.
  • His personality is described as "inscrutable".
  • Dabi was unable to cry since his tear glands were burned,[25] although blood would still flow from his eyes and the burns underneath them. When he's later put on life support, he appears to cry genuine tears mixed in with the usual blood.
  • In the anime, Dabi is shown crying regular tears on two occasions: a single one after he was defeated by his entire family, and a regular flow of them when he was shown on life support.
  • Dabi hates fish.[26]
  • Dabi likes cold soba, which is the same temperature preference of his youngest brother.[27]
  • Dabi shared his birthday with Moe Kamiji.
  • Dabi shares his English and Japanese voice actors with other characters:
  • His Japanese voice actor, Hiro Shimono, also voices Susugu Mitarai.
  • As a child, Dabi's English voice actor is Sara Ragsdale, who also voices one of the Sisters of Saint Lila's Academy.
  • Dabi can be considered a dark reflection of Shoto, as it's been implied that Shoto may have become just like Dabi if he couldn't forgive his father and let his burning hatred for Endeavor consume him as Dabi had done; Shoto himself noted this and it was the reason why he wanted to deal with Dabi himself.[28]
  • Dabi was born prematurely and was small throughout his childhood because of it until he went through a growth spurt.[2]
  • Dabi's flames were originally orange like his father's, and they didn't turn blue until he hit puberty.
  • In Shoto's first flashback of their childhood, Toya was shown to have white hair in the manga and crimson hair in the anime, though both versions later depicted him having white hair in the photo placed on his altar. This inconsistency was seemingly incorporated later on in the series, with it being revealed that Toya's hair was initially crimson but turned white as he grew older.
  • In the new version of that same flashback in the anime, Toya's hair was changed back to white.
  • After washing out his black hair dye, Horikoshi commented that he had trouble drawing Dabi's hair to look different from Katsuki Bakugo's.[6]
  • There were many hints in the story that Dabi was Toya Todoroki all along.
  • These include their similar appearance, as both Dabi and Toya have spiky hair and turquoise eyes.
  • Throughout the series, Dabi was shown to have acted as if he knew Shoto and Endeavor beforehand, the way he spoke to them, referring to them by their full names, also indicated that they had history.
  • Both Toya and Dabi's powers are identical, both having powerful fire-based Quirks that surpassed Endeavor's but a weak constitution and low tolerance for their own flames.
  • Dabi shares some features with Frankenstein's Monster from the 1931 movie Frankenstein.
  • Toya's skin attached with surgical staples and his body having been restored with regenerative tissues, leaving several scars around his body, is shared with the Monster's body being made out of several corpses.
  • Victor Frankenstein's lifelong pursuit to create his creature filled him with purpose and drove a series of feverish attempts to fulfill his dream. Something shared with Dabi's father who planned to have children in order to give a perfect match of Quirks in order to fulfill his dream to surpass All Might.
  • Ironically, Victor and Enji both yearned for their creations to fulfill their ambitions, only for said creations to turn on them after feeling rejected and become vengeful killers.
  • Dabi's introduction gesture in Chapter 191 looks like a mirrored version of Frankenstein's Monster's gesture with both hands standing close to his chest.
  • Ironically, alongside Tomura and Himiko, Dabi died the same way in which he had killed others; by burning himself alive. This irony is added to by how Toya repeatedly burned himself when he was younger all for the sake of gaining his father's attention and approval.
  • Unlike the other two however, Dabi survived the Final War and was kept alive through advanced life support in a hospital, which allowed him to spend the remainder of his life being visited by his family, until passing away sometime within the following eight years.

Quotes#

  • (To the Vanguard Action Squad) "This will just be a signal fire. We'll fill those heroes full of holes... and put them in their place. All for a brighter future."[29]
  • (To Eraser Head) "Quite worthy of being an instructor at U.A. Ain't that right, hero? Is it cuz your students are so precious? Hope you got what it takes to protect them... See ya later."[30]
  • (To Vlad King) "Why not get cocky? You're playing right into our hands. The second you lost the initiative signaled your defeat. You've got the top hero-training academy, U.A., and the Symbol of Peace, All Might... the two most trusted foundations of our hero-based society. But now one mess after another is shaking that trust... don't you think that loss of faith will spread like wildfire throughout society? Think about it... how your careless administration keeps allowing attack after attack... you're so weak... you couldn't even stop a criminal organization from abducting your students."[17]
  • (To unnamed criminals) "If you're trash, at least burn and be kindling for my flames."[31]
  • (To Hawks)"The League? Shigaraki? I never gave a crap about them. A single person with a single conviction has the power to change the world. There are no true heroes. I plan to make Stain's will a reality. See ya, Hawks. Your life's another thing I don't care about."[25]
  • (To Shoto) "We might share the same blood... But we ended up real different! A warped rail can never mingle with a straight and narrow one! The limitations of super-powered society! That's us! You hear me?! Running in parallel but forever apart! Now burn to ash! Die for our sake!"[24]
