Zero Gravity

ArticleSource revision

Zero Gravity is the Quirk used by Ochaco Uraraka.

Description#

Zero Gravity allows the user to remove the effects of gravity from solid things upon touching them with the pads on their fingertips.

The targets lose their gravitational pull the moment Ochaco makes contact with them, effectively making them weightless. Through Zero Gravity, Ochaco can make anything solid float in mid-air as long as they are within the weight limit of her Quirk, which is around three tons. She is able to activate or cancel her Quirk's effects by closing her fingers together.

As part of her training, Ochaco put herself into plastic sphere that would tumble down a mountain, all in effort to get her inner ear canals used to zero gravity and reduce nausea, all while increasing how much weight she can lift.

During the Final War, Ochaco underwent an Awakening after being grievously stabbed by Himiko Toga while refusing to back down. This allowed the anti-gravity effects to spread among each of the objects that came into contact with each other, without Ochaco having to touch all of them.[1] She also gained the ability to generate gravitational energy in the shape of bubbles that cause anything they come into contact with to float, allowing her to effectively use her Quirk from a distance. These bubbles can also somewhat compress together to cause a chain reaction, resulting in a shockwave that not only makes enemies float but also repel them away. This Awakening also removed Ochaco's weight limit of three tons and allowed her to set down her weightless targets in a slower fashion, and without pressing her fingertips together.[2][3]

After this Awakening, the bubble-shaped energy now automatically surrounds anything affected by Zero Gravity, with it dissipating upon Ochaco deactivating her Quirk.[4]

Weaknesses#

The more objects Ochaco has under the influence of her Quirk, the more she will struggle to keep them afloat. Continued strain and floating herself results in her feeling sick and nauseous, even to the point of vomiting. This can also happen when she uses the Quirk on herself to float for too long. With training, she has managed to mitigate these drawbacks considerably.

Due to her being limited to floating objects from only her hands, which are also her Quirk Factor, Ochaco will be unable to utilize her Quirk if she loses the said limbs. Because her Quirk is activated by touch, she is vulnerable to opponents that have ranged Quirks and can keep their distance.

When Ochaco underwent her Awakening after getting seriously stabbed by Himiko, the new abilities are also harder to control, as when she used it on Himiko's Double army, it affected everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe, and kept them all suspended in the air.[2]

Usage#

Ochaco's main battle tactic consists of using her Quirk directly on opponents by getting close enough to make contact with them through her fingers. This consequently causes her targets to continuously float up and lose their footing, severely limiting, if not eliminating, their fighting capability. After learning martial arts with Gunhead, she has developed a few moves that she is able to use in conjunction with her Quirk.

Ochaco often takes advantage of ravaged areas by using her Quirk to gather wreckage without an opponent noticing, expertly exploiting the collateral damage of a destructive Quirk. Ochaco can release floating rubble on enemies as a long-range projectile attack or remove the weight of certain heavy structures, holding onto them to use as an improvised melee weapon. This ability to easily clean up disaster zones also makes her useful for rescue missions.

Ochaco can further use Zero Gravity to remove her own weight, increasing her agility, make unconscious allies and enemies weightless to transport them easier, deflect heavy incoming projectiles, and create decoys by making objects levitate slightly above the ground.

Because prolonged usage of Zero Gravity causes nausea, Ochaco had several mechanisms installed in her costume in order to mitigate its effects. She is known to be careful with her hands so that she doesn't accidentally activate her Quirk on something or someone she doesn't want to.

Additionally, while having temporary access to this Quirk due to the use of her own given Quirk, Transform, Himiko demonstrated the potential lethality of Zero Gravity; after causing Chitose Kizuki and her henchmen to float up to a dangerous height, she releases the ability and allows them to plummet to the ground, killing them all instantly.

During the Final War, Ochaco utilized the awakened Zero Gravity to completely halt Himiko's Sad Man's Legion, causing her Double swarm and the accompanying Heroes and Villains to all be suspended in the air.[1] After finally getting Himiko to stand down, Ochaco uses what's left of her strength to ensure that all her fellow Heroes have a safe landing.[3]

Named Ultimate Moves#

Ochaco Uraraka#

Skill Release: Ochaco presses her fingertips together and makes whatever she has touched stop floating. This move is first used when she saved Izuku Midoriya from falling to his death during the U.A. Entrance Exam.[5]

Meteor Shower: After levitating a large quantity of rubble surrounding her, Ochaco collects the collateral-damaged structures, forming a giant meteor of debris above her opponents. She then causes to fall on an opponent. She first used this move during her match against Katsuki Bakugo.[6]

Meteor Fafrotskies: Ochaco, in conjunction with Tsuyu Asui, rises and throws a large quantity of debris at the targets. It is a stronger, multi-ranged version of Meteor Shower. They first used this move against two villains with gigantification Quirks during their internship.[7]

Zero Satellites: Ochaco floats some nearby debris and, with the addition of her grappling hooks, attacks her opponent by slamming the debris straight at them. This was first used against Himiko Toga after being lured into an ambush.[8]

Comet Home Run: After touching some rubble and a pillar to make them weightless, Ochaco then uses the pillar to forcefully hit the rubble at her enemy.[9] This move is first used to distract Tenya Ida during the Battle Trial.

Gravity Plus: Using Gunhead Martial Arts, Ochaco touches her opponent to make them float before grabbing them by the arm and throwing them over her shoulder to the ground.[10] This move is first used to defeat a smuggler during the second Hero Work-Studies.

Spacewalk: Using her grappling hooks, Ochaco hooks onto an opponent and reels herself in, closing the distance between herself and her opponent, all while under the effects of Zero Gravity.[11]

Himiko Toga#

Skill Release: Himiko uses Ochaco's Zero Gravity to negate the gravitational pull of objects, then release the effect on them, causing them to barrel toward the ground.[12]

Trivia#

  • Whenever Ochaco activates her Quirk in the anime, the pads of her fingertips briefly glow pink.
  • The characters in Zero Gravity (無重力) include the kanji for "negative/none/nil" (無), and "gravity" (重力), essentially meaning "no gravity/gravity-less".
