Tenya Ida

ArticleSynopsisRelationshipsSource revision

This is article is about the former Class 1-A student. For a list of Heroes known as Ingenium, see Ingenium (Disambiguation).

Tenya Ida also known as the Turbo Hero: Ingenium, was the Class Representative of Class 1-A at U.A. High School, training there to become a Pro Hero and follow the legacy of the Ida Family. He shares his Hero Name with his older brother, Tensei.

Eight years after the Final War, Tenya has graduated from U.A. alongside his classmates, becoming the No. 13 Pro Hero.[5] He has also become the new leader of Tensei's agency, Team Idaten.[3][6]

Appearance#

Tenya is a tall and muscular young man with a wide frame. He has short dark blue hair, flattened neatly down and parted on the right side of his head, a small patch completely shaved near the base of his head, and rather square, blue eyes (gold-colored eyes in the manga) which match the notably pointed shape of his jaw. He usually wears a serious expression, and his eyebrows seem permanently pointed inwards, quite thin and long, the far ends sharply hooked inwards, and he wears glasses with rectangular lenses. Because of his Quirk, he possesses calves that are incredibly thick, and shaped like automobile engines, with six silver exhaust pipes protruding from each leg in columns of three. He gains new mufflers after removing the old ones from his legs, with them being longer and shaped a bit differently, although they can retract into his calves.

At U.A., he wears the standard male uniform: a light gray blazer with dark turquoise trimmings over a white dress shirt, dark blue-green dress pants, a red tie, and plain brown shoes.

His Hero Costume consists of a dark blue one-piece suit with a high collar, over which he wears various pieces of armor, all in a white color, including a chest plate, a armor collar around his neck and another around his upper arm, and metal vambraces that extend past his elbows pointed at the ends. He wears a helmet covering his entire face, along with visually making his eyes fully white, its sharp bevor full of holes to allow him to speak and breathe easily, and its upper piece rounded over his head with two larger holes on either side, two curved horns just behind and a single spike sticking out of the back of his head.

On his feet, he wears white knee-high boots with golden accessories, which are specialized for his Quirk, and around his torso, he has three thick metal pipes, attached with a blue band with yellow tips, although these only serve as decoration. His armor is very lightweight and does not protect him much; its main purpose is to cut down air resistance rather than to protect him.

Following the Hosu Incident, a scar remains across Tenya's left shoulder where Stain had stabbed him.

After his costume was destroyed during Class 1-A's fight against Izuku Midoriya, Tenya's costume is remade by Mei Hatsume with several alterations. Tenya's dark blue bodysuit beneath remains the same, with his helmet becoming sleeker and more detailed, with the top half able to retract into the lower half. His chestplate becomes sharper, with tall spikes jutting backwards from his shoulders, and a large back plate is added. He now wears a pair of pauldrons with engine-like protrusions decorating their backs. He also wears a pair of partial gauntlets covering the back of his hand, which have a small vent each. In addition, Tenya wears thin bands of metal around his thighs, and his shin armor has significantly changed, with a much sleeker and thinner design, removing the golden pieces and faux engines, with some golden accents around his shoulder and ankles.

During the Final War, he gives some of his armor to Shoto Todoroki to wear, to get Shoto from Kamino to the Gunga Mountains, in which his metal mufflers on his exhaust pipes exploded after surpassing his limits. Over the rest of his school years, Tenya's mufflers on his legs have grown back and restored to his original appearance.

Upon graduating high school, Tenya wears his hair slicked back instead of to the sides.

Eight years after the Final War, Tenya has grown taller and muscular, along with wearing a different pair of glasses, and his shaved hair base now matches the color of his hair. His costume remains mostly the same, with parts of the armor being simplified a bit, and his helmet and mask having been modified to have two sets of iron braces around his neck and two horns sticking from the top, with the helmet is also pointy at the front. This costume can be stored as a briefcase.

Personality#

Tenya may look severe, unfriendly, and even intimidating at first glance, but in reality, he's straightforward, earnest, intelligent, sophisticated, disciplined, and noble, although a bit clueless about personal interactions due to his elite upbringing. A testament to his generally hyperactive and intense behavior, Tenya often exhibits plenty of peculiar tics, such as moving his arms around in strange chopping patterns or sometimes twitching his body uncontrollably; yet he rarely sheds his usual strict expression.

Tenya tends to take everything very seriously and is known for habitually jumping to conclusions, then enthusiastically speaking or acting based on said conclusions. For example, after assuming that Izuku had figured out the true nature of the U.A. Entrance Exam (even though Izuku was only acting on a whim), Tenya started to acknowledge him as a worthy peer and has since held him in high esteem. Furthermore, Tenya always attempts to immerse himself heavily into practical exercises, playing his part as a Hero or Villain in an overly theatrical manner, as an attempt to appear more authentic.

Tenya is extremely dedicated to his studies and is always eager to learn new things, regardless of whether they have anything to do with Heroics. As Class 1-A's representative, Tenya is obsessed with organization and discipline, expecting his classmates to follow suit, which more often than not annoys them due to his usually loud and overbearing nature. At the same time, Tenya takes personal responsibility for the safety and guidance of his classmates in times of crisis, considering it his duty as class representative to protect and keep them away from dangerous situations should they ever arise. Tenya knows how to quickly respond to emergencies, downplay panic and disorder among bystanders.

Tenya is very humble, willing to admit to his mistakes, apologize for rude behavior, and improve in areas he lacks. This humilty became clear when Tenya admitted that seeking vengeance against Stain was not how a real hero should act. Shortly after the altercation with the Hero Killer, he left his damaged left hand unhealed, both as a reminder of his recklessness and a motivation to pursue true heroism. Tenya values honor and fair play, becoming outraged if it turns out that he is being manipulated by more selfish personalities such as Mei Hatsume who used him during their battle in the U.A. Sports Festival to promote her inventions.

Being part of the highly-esteemed Ida Family, Tenya is proud of his lineage and works hard to meet his expectations. Tenya greatly admires his older brother, Tensei (also known as the Turbo Hero: Ingenium) and aspires to become a similar hero. His relationship with his brother is so strong that after Stain severely injured Tensei, Tenya sought to avenge him by trying to hunt down and dispose of the Hero Killer himself. In doing so, he broke several rules of Hero work and laws, which otherwise would have been extremely uncharacteristic of him. Despite this, he realized the error of his actions and how his behavior was not that of a hero's. Following this incident, Tenya started over as a hero, and having inherited the alias of Ingenium, he now works hard to uphold his brother's Hero name and live up to the reputation of the Ida Family.

Tenya is usually very strict when it comes to following rules and regulations, opposing acts of heroism that go against the laws set in place, especially after learning his lesson during his encounter with Stain. Following Katsuki Bakugo's kidnapping, Tenya was the most outspoken against his friends' idea to set out and rescue him, demanding that Katsuki's rescue should be left to the Pro Heroes, not wanting his classmates to break the law or run the risk of injuring themselves. He showed up at night to stop them, not wanting them to make the same mistake he did, and even punching Izuku out of sheer rage for not taking his feelings into account. Despite all this though, Tenya relented, choosing to accompany his friends instead and ended up being vital in rescuing Katsuki from the League of Villains. Over time, Tenya has become less stringent with breaking the rules when he knows that said actions must be done for the greater good.

Following his many experiences at U.A., Tenya has gradually mellowed from his initially strict nature, genuinely caring about his friends and always looking out for others, though his seriousness as class representative has remained intact, usually being the one to scold his classmates when they are being reckless or acting out of line. Out of all his classmates, Tenya has taken inspiration from Izuku the most, being greatly motivated by his kind and selfless nature. When Izuku went rogue from U.A., prompting his classmates to face him in order to bring him back to his senses, Tenya was the one to reach Izuku, taking his hand and repeating his friend's words that giving help that isn't asked for is the mark of a true Hero. During the Final War, Tenya once again plays a key role, being the one to get Shoto to the raging inferno caused by Dabi, helping Shoto stop his villainous older brother and also save the rest of his family and many innocent lives.

Eight years after graduating from U.A., Tenya has become a high-ranking hero, displaying a more mature and humble nature. During his class' get-together to celebrate Shoto becoming the No. 2 Hero, he addressed his lower ranked classmates, saying that with all the changes made to the Hero Billboard Chart, their rankings aren't just numbers anymore and don't dictate their value as Heroes. Furthermore, after helping his fellow Heroes stop a runaway driver, Tenya interjects when Izuku and Katsuki start bickering over who made it to the culprit first, saying that it's not a race while also hoping that the driver didn't intend to cause any harm upon hearing him plead innocence. Tenya also starts making other contributions to society over rescue and fighting crime, most notably, he helps out with Ochaco Uraraka's Quirk Counselling expansion, touring elementary schools across Japan with her, Tsuyu, and Momo to provide helpful guidance to young children.

Tenya also achieves his dream of becoming a Hero alongside his brother Tensei, having inherited Team Idaten from his brother and with Tensei returning to heroism thanks to advancements in technology allowing him to walk again. Tenya and Tensei go on to run Team Idaten, with the two brothers being known for seeking and helping out lost children.

Abilities#

Overall Abilities: Tenya has repeatedly shown that he is a highly formidable combatant. His skills earned him fourth place in the Quirk Apprehension Test, sixth place in the U.A. Entrance Exam, having the second-highest amount of villain points, and fourth place at the U.A. Sports Festival, although he qualified for third place if he had stayed for the closing ceremony. Thanks to his Quirk, Tenya has been revered as one of the fastest students in Class 1-A, and he uses his increased speed to supplement his fighting style, which involves powerful, high-speed kicks that can even crush metal. Using his incredible speed and quick reflexes, Tenya swiftly defeated Ibara Shiozaki, one of the most formidable students in Class 1-B, and nearly defeated Shoto, one of the strongest students in Class 1-A, but the latter blindsided Tenya by freezing his mufflers before encasing Tenya in ice. Shoto and Izuku, two of the most powerful students in their class, commented on Tenya's superior speed, even though Izuku has trained himself to keep pace with Tenya, while Shoto, on the other hand, cannot.

When facing the Hero Killer: Stain — a powerful A-Rank villain who bested many pro heroes, including Tenya's brother, Tensei — Tenya himself was fueled with an unadulterated sense of vengeance for his brother, which ultimately led to him almost being killed by the Hero Killer after Tenya had voluntarily hunted the assassin down. But after Izuku and Shoto arrived to help, Tenya discarded his desire for vengeance and was able to hold his own against Stain better while working alongside his two classmates. During the said bout, Tenya unlocked a new Ultimate Move, "Recipro Extend", with Shoto's help to help successfully immobilize Stain. Following his run-in with the Hero Killer, Tenya has been recognized as one of the stronger students of Class 1-A, as noted by Pixie-Bob.[7]

During the Joint Training Battle, Tenya, using the advice given to him by his older brother, was able to increase his speed to the point where he is much faster than Gran Torino, who is revered as one of fastest heroes in the world. With his new speed and augmented fighting style, Tenya drastically overwhelmed Juzo Honenuki, a recommended student, and forced him into retreat.

By the time of the Paranormal Liberation War, Tenya's abilities have further improved with a greater degree of control of his "Recipro Turbo". Soon after, Tenya, alongside Nejire Hado, Mirio Togata, and Katsuki, remarkably pushed back and stalled multiple Near High-End Nomu for an extended period, something that many other Pro Heroes struggled and failed to do, and overall emerged the Nomu bout with minor wounds. Tenya continued to train himself with the Pussycats after Izuku had gone rogue, and when Class 1-A arrived to subdue him, Tenya was able to use his greatly enhanced speed in conjunction with assistance from his classmates to catch up to Izuku and grab him.

In the Final War against the Villains, Tenya was chosen to back up Shoto in bringing down Dabi, a further testament to his skills. After Dabi was teleported to the Gunga Mountain, Tenya showcased the true capabilities of his speed, blasting him and Shoto through the skies to reach the destination. His speed has enhanced so immensely that he has clocked himself at the rate of Mach 3, allowing him to streak across the landscape from Kamino Ward to the Gunga Mountains in less than 10 minutes.

Keen Intellect: Tenya was ranked 2nd place in the mid-terms for Class 1-A, proving his tremendous academic prowess. He could discern that there were parameters of the U.A. Entrance Exam that he was unaware of. Tenya showed a sense of deductive skill while tracking the Hero Killer: Stain and managed to trace the patterns of his killing sprees. Having read news of the Hero Killer's crimes, Tenya saw that out of the seven places Stain had been, at least four Heroes were attacked in each, with Tensei being his first victim in Hosu, using this information to confirm that Stain would appear in the city again.

Tenya also has strategic and tactical abilities. When facing Stain, Tenya recalled how Shoto had frozen his mufflers during their battle at the U.A. Sports Festival and used it as a battle tactic to increase his speed even further to blindside Stain. When he was paired with Mashirao Ojiro to battle Power Loader in the Final Exams, Tenya came up with a strategy that involved carrying Mashirao on his back and using "Recipro Burst" to evade the traps Power Loader had set swiftly. When it seemed that the Pro Hero was about to defeat them, Tenya quickly thought of another plan, in which Mashirao wrapped his tail around Tenya's leg, and Tenya himself used "Recipro Extend" to fling Mashirao to the escape gate while the latter parried Power Loader's attack, quickly securing victory for the young heroes.

Leadership Skills: Tenya is a strong leader, as shown when he calms his panicked peers during an evacuation that turns into a stampede. Tenya became class president of Class 1-A after Izuku resigned and gave the position to him, believing him to be better suited for the job.

Quirk#

Engine: Tenya's Quirk gives him car-like engines in each of his calves, giving him incredible running speed and extreme kicking power. Tenya needs to fuel his engines by drinking orange juice.

Tenya's engines have multiple gears; it is currently unknown how many, but it has been implied that there are more than three. Much like a real engine, his Quirk requires that the exhaust pipes on the backs of his legs remain clear of obstructions to function correctly.

Tenya engaged in hardcore, long-distance running as part of his training to increase his leg strength and stamina to run faster for more extended periods. During the Quirk Apprehension Test, he ran fifty meters in 3.04 in third gear, meaning he ran at an average speed of 51.29 kilometers per hour (36.79 miles per hour), making his maximum speed exceedingly above this.

Sometime before the Joint Training Battle, his older brother Tensei told him about a secret family method regarding their Quirk, prompting Tenya to remove the mufflers from his legs to grow new ones to withstand his training. His Recipro now lasts for ten minutes, as opposed to ten seconds. However, Tenya becomes so fast that he cannot control himself, though he gradually gains better handling over his heightened speed.

Ultimate Moves#

  • Engine Boost: This move allows Tenya to accelerate his Quirk.
  • Recipro Burst: This move allows Tenya to forcibly accelerate his Quirk, giving Tenya greatly enhanced speed for ten seconds at the cost of disabling his engines for a short period of time afterward. Even Shoto could not fully evade Recipro Burst and admits that he expected no less of its incredible speed.[8]
  • Recipro Extend: After Tenya manages to cool down the negative effects of Recipro Burst, he regains even more acceleration than before.[9]
  • Recipro Turbo: After removing his mufflers and allowing new ones to grow in their place, Tenya is able to accelerate his Quirk and greatly enhance his speed for ten minutes. The speed this Ultimate Move grants is faster than Recipro Burst and Recipro Extend, surpassing even Jet.[10]
  • Maximum Speed: Tenya charges his Engines to the absolute maximum, then releases that charge, travelling at speeds that supercede even those of Recipro Turbo.[11]

Stats#

Equipment#

Hero Costume: Tenya's hero costume is an armored suit that supposedly decreases wind resistance but is actually mostly for decoration. Contrary to its appearance, his armor is lightweight. After his costume was destroyed during Class 1-A's fight against Izuku Midoriya, Tenya's costume is remade by Mei Hatsume with several alterations, being a much sleeker and thinner design.

  • Ingenium Boots: The boots contain cooling devices and other mechanisms that augment the performance of his engines. As a result, his running distance is greatly extended. Later on, the shin armor would significantly change, being a much sleeker and thinner design, removing the golden pieces and faux engines, and thin bands of metal around his thighs.
  • Ingenium Helmet: The helmet reduces wind resistance. Later on, his helmet would become sleeker and more detailed, with the top half able to retract into the lower half.
  • Ingenium Muffler: The muffler is for decoration.[12]

Trivia#

  • Tenya had two known preliminary designs. The first one hardly resembled the current Tenya, being a 27-year-old Pro Hero instead of a high school student. The second one, in contrast, was extremely similar to current Tenya, albeit this design was much slimmer and not as tall or muscular.
  • Kohei Horikoshi mentions in the first volume that Tenya was created during the serialization meeting and that the character ended up deviating from the original concept art (possibly because of the setting being changed to a school one), which may explain the disparity between both designs.
  • In regard to his hero costume, Tenya was extremely different from his final and current design. Most notably, the original concept art featured a helmet with the shape of a dinosaur head.
  • Tenya's surname contains the kanji for an old way of saying "cooked rice" and "rice field", and his first name contains "heaven" and the character the interjections "how," "what" and "alas" are written with in Japanese.
  • Tenya's name comes from the Japanese name for Skanda, the Mahayana protector of Buddhist temples. Idaten is famous for being a fast runner, and is often used as a symbol of a person who is able to run fast.
  • According to Tenya's Volume 1 profile:
  • Tenya likes studying.
  • His favorite food is beef stew.
  • Tenya's known U.A. data is as follows:
  • Student No. 4 in Class 1-A.
  • Ranked sixth during the Entrance Exam.
  • Ranked fourth during the Quirk Apprehension Test.
  • His fifty meter-dash record is 3.04 seconds.
  • Ranked second in Class 1-A's grades.[13]
  • Ranked fourth during the U.A. Sports Festival First-Year Stage. If he had stayed for the closing ceremony, Tenya would have received third place alongside Fumikage Tokoyami.
  • Tenya received a total of three hundred and one nominations from Pro Heroes for his U.A. Sports Festival performance, making him the fourth most nominated Class 1-A student.
  • Scored eighty in the Provisional Hero License Exam.
  • Tenya's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows:
  • Ranked 8th in the first, second and ninth Popularity Polls.
  • Ranked 5th in the third, fifth, and eighth Popularity Polls.
  • Ranked 9th in the fourth Popularity Poll.
  • Ranked 4th in the sixth Popularity Poll.
  • Ranked 6th in the seventh Popularity Poll.
  • Tenya's hero name, "Ingenium", might draw inspiration from the Ingenium engine family.
  • According to Tenya's Ultra Analysis profile:
  • Since they both have a fighting style that heavily revolves around kicking, Tenya and Izuku often trade tips with each other.
  • Notes that Tenya sometimes acts out of self-interest, but has matured and become more flexible since the Hosu Incident.
  • His personality is described as "class-presidential".
  • To keep his Quirk fueled throughout the day, Tenya drinks two cups of orange juice every morning, afternoon, and evening.[14]
  • Tenya's eyesight degree is -0.8, and his costume has prescription lenses built into the helmet.[3]
  • Tenya's Japanese voice actor, Kaito Ishikawa, also voices Manga Fukidashi and Ronaudo Keage.
  • In the manga, Tenya's speech bubbles are uniquely square when compared to the other characters. This likely references his strict, rule-abiding nature.
  • Tenya is one of the few characters that has notably different eye colors in both the manga and anime. In the anime, his eyes are blue, while in the manga they were red before switching to a shade of gold near the end of the series.

Quotes#

  • (To himself, in regards to Izuku, Shoto, and Tensei) "I'm a novice. I can't measure up to their standards! Be that as it may... I have to stand up! Never again! Never again will they... or my brother... leave me behind in the dust!"[9]
  • (To Shoto) "Yes, I can run... I can do it. Because after all, Todoroki, my legs... are meant to guide wayward children."[11]
