Nirengeki Shoda

ArticleSynopsisSource revision

Nirengeki Shoda, also known as Mines, was the vice class representative[3] of Class 1-B at U.A. High School and training to become a Pro Hero.

Eight years after the Final War, Nirengeki has graduated from U.A., and has become a Pro Hero.

Appearance#

Nirengeki is a chubby young man of below-average height with short, ice-blue hair and a round face. He has large, wide eyes with small pupils and is usually seen looking sheepish and apologetic; his eyebrows are almost always pointed upwards.

His Hero Costume consists of a black, high-collared suit with a trim of pale white lines around its collar and hem and a similar pattern over his torso and shoulders, along with plain black pants and white knee-high boots. A blue scouter-looking device is worn over Nirengeki's left eye, and he has a connected radar on the back of one of his gloved hands.

Eight years after the Final War, Nirengeki dons a new costume similar to his old one and now wears a pair of yellow visors over both his eyes. He has also grown a small moustache.

Personality#

Nirengeki is humble and will not take credit for something he feels he hasn't earned by his strength. This humility is shown when he chooses to pull himself out from the final rounds of the U.A. Sports Festival due to having been under Hitoshi Shinso's Brainwashing.

As the vice president of Class 1-B, his classmates trust him and find him reliable. In battle, Nirengeki is shown to be focused and collaborates well with others, as he works in unison with Reiko Yanagi and Yui Kodai, displaying a good sense of teamwork. He also complimented Mina Ashido on her uppercut afterward, implying that he is mature and does not hold grudges.

Additionally, Nirengeki does not seem to envy Class 1-A and is not seen supporting his class' rivalry or Neito Monoma's tirades. He is described as 1-B's conscience and appears more amicable and less competitive than some of his classmates.

Abilities#

Overall Abilities: Nirengeki is a rather competent fighter who excels in one-on-one combat and possesses good Quirk handling. His Quirk, Twin Impact, allows Nirengeki to cause attacks to repeat a second time remotely, but with significantly amplified force involved compared to the initial impact. He can also exploit his Quirk for mobility, such as jumping higher and dashing faster. Nirengeki also has good camaraderie, augmenting the attacks of himself and those of his allies when their initial assault doesn't have sufficient strength. The more potency behind a base attack, the stronger it will become when Nirengeki enhances it. Nirengeki's overall abilities make him a pivotal, supporting asset on a team, wherein he can increase the singular attacks of his comrades or the collaboration attacks initiated by him and his comrades working together, as there's only so much force he can produce on his own.

During the final round of Joint Training Battle, Nirengeki not only demonstrated his comradeship by magnifying the cooperation attacks enacted by Reiko Yanagi and Yui Kodai but showcased impressive reaction time. After reading the sporadic movements of Minoru Mineta, he defeated the Fresh-Picked Hero with a single punch. And while Minoru's constitution may not be very high, to render someone unconscious with a single hit is still quite a feat on Nirengeki's part. His abilities eventually garnered the attention of the Lion Hero: Shishido, allowing Nirengeki to intern under the No. 13 Pro Hero and improve his flurry of attacks and the ability to read ahead of situations.

Tactical Intellect: Nirengeki is exceptionally astute. Before his team’s match commenced, Nirengeki propositioned that they execute a strategy reminiscent of that of Setsuna Tokage's team from the previous Joint Training match while citing how both teams are similar in terms of balance compared the opposing teams from Class 1-A. Since Nirengeki's group has members who excel in using technical Quirks, he surmised it would be better for them to hide on the battlefield and launch surprise attacks. During the last match, Nirengeki immediately deduced that Mina had blocked his attack despite it not being visible to him and had to rely on his tracker.

Quirk#

Twin Impact: Nirengeki's Quirk allows him to strike a target and then remotely make a point of contact experience a second impact. The second impact is several times stronger than the initial blow.[4]

Nirengeki can use this power to create a force of propulsion, such as to bestow an impact on an object, send it flying at opponents, or send possible weapons away.

Ultimate Moves#

  • Fire:[5] After making a point of contact on a target, Nirengeki activates its second impact, allowing him to send projectiles flying or inflict damage on an opponent remotely.[4]

Stats#

Equipment#

Impact Location Recording Devices: Nirengeki wears gloves and a scouter-like half-visor over his left eye. These devices allow him to keep track of the places where he landed a blow, allowing him to activate his Quirk at the most ideal times.

Trivia#

  • Nirengeki's surname contains the kanji for "level" and "rice field", and his first name contains "two", "join", and "attack".
  • Put together, the first and second characters of his first name mean "double", meaning that his first name put together means "double attack", and his last name is homophonous with the Japanese word for "palm-strike". Thus, his full name literally translates to "palm strike, double attack," which is a clear reference to his Quirk.
  • In Volume 5, Kohei Horikoshi referred to this as his "greatest naming achievement to date".
  • Later, in Nirengeki's Ultra Analysis profile, he says that his editor scoffed upon first hearing the pun in his character's name.
  • He likes to watch boxing matches.
  • He shares his birthday with his classmate, Manga Fukidashi.
  • Along with Ibara Shiozaki, Nirengeki was also originally planned to be in Class 1-A.
  • Nirengeki shares his Japanese and English voice actors with other characters.
  • His Japanese voice actor, Kenta Ōkuma, also voices Cementoss, Manual, Centipeder, Dozaemon, and Itejiro Toteki.
  • His English voice actor, Dallas Reid, also voices Juzo Honenuki.
  • The English subtitles for the anime localizes his Hero name as "Mindz".[6]
  • His hero costume resembles Frieza's army uniforms from Dragon Ball, notably the device on his left eye, which heavily resembles a scouter.
  • Nirengeki and Yosetsu Awase are the only Class 1-B members who are not seen in the present during the Final War.

Quotes#

  • (To Midnight and the other Sports Festival participants) "This is a contest of skill. Letting someone who didn't do anything advance... doesn't it defeat the whole point of the Sports Festival? Isn't it even against the rules?"[7]
