Episode 167

ArticleSource revision

Izuku Midoriya: Rising is the one hundred and sixty-seventh episode of the My Hero Academia anime and the eighth episode of the eighth season.

Summary#

Thanks to the efforts of Eraser Head and all the other people taking a stand against the League of Villains, Deku is now able to stand on his feet and keep up his final fight against "All For One", this time with his body fully intact and several of the people who've put their lives on the line to fight alongside him.

From the portals created by "Kurogiri", Deku's classmates, several students from other Hero schools, and every other Pro Hero who could muster enough energy to continue the battle, pour out from all directions. The boy's friends say that once they got the message from the Police Force and heard that Eraser Head regained control of "Kurogiri", they instantly jumped at the chance to help their classmate in his time of need if their bodies could help it, as they've come this far and can't call themselves Heroes if they refuse to go the distance when the situation calls for it.

On the opposing side, "All For One" stares at the Heroes mobilizing from afar, still amazed that his successor's body has held up and his consciousness is still in one piece, despite Deku destroying Tomura's mind and body through the forceful transfer of One For All. Even though he got another chance at enacting his plan, "All For One" feels an incurable emptiness due to the fact that Yoichi's vestige was destroyed along with One For All, and he believes the permanent loss of his brother was what caused his own vestige to survive.

"All For One" begins to float in the air and tells Deku that he "understands" something now and asks the boy if he agrees on this point: that tragedy is what creates strength. To sell his revelation, "All For One's" arms and left leg burst open as groves of gray, spiked tendrils start growing and slithering across the battlefield.

Cellophane then steps forward to challenge the Villain's assertion, as unlike the bigger players in this conflict, he's lived a completely normal life compared to them, and his only reason for getting strong is so he doesn't get left behind by his peers. Cellophane then runs headfirst towards "All For One" and mentions that Shoto has been dealt a rough hand in life and that he was relieved at the news of his initial victory over Dabi. Cellophane believes that things are better off for people like him if miserable things like his story and others never happened to begin with.

From the sides, two portals open up, as both Endeavor and Shoto, who were among several Heroes to join after some persuasion by Natsuo, slam "All For One" with two Flashfire Fist attacks. Cellophane jumps up and carries Shoto to safety with his Tape, confirming that the other boy was the person he was talking about, and that his opinion was one thing on his mind after he heard about Dabi's first defeat.

As "All For One" begins to rise higher and spread out more tendrils, Present Mic and the last remaining combatants finish their arrival, with the DJ yelling out a rallying call for everyone in the wasteland to push themselves. "All For One" looks on that mob in disinterest, saying that these injured Heroes are trash that can't hold a candle to All Might as he starts actively attacking everyone. While hugely outnumbered, the difference in power between the dozens of combatants and the one Villain is evident: while the Heroes can negate, dodge, or in some cases block "All For One's" attacks, it takes several of them to achieve one of these actions, so not much ground can be gained.

As "All For One" and the Heroes clash, Deku tries to stand up and join them, but collapses back on the ground almost immediately. Eraser Heads reminds his student that while the Rewinding repaired his arms, the activation wasn't lengthy enough to reverse Deku's body to a state prior to all the massive amounts of damage he sustained from his previous fight with Tomura. The boy then tells his teacher that he gave up his Quirk, but he can feel the embers of the raw power cultivated by One For All still inside him, even if the Quirk Factors from the other abilities that make it up are no longer a part of his body.

Despite staggering each time he takes a step forward, Deku is determined to use the lingering ghost of his Quirk to take down "All For One". Before he can overexert himself further, Eraser Head stops him and offers Deku some medicine and bandages that the civilians donated. He also gives him the shirt that one of his former detractors supplied, which is apparently another All Might-branded collector's item. After he's tended to, Can't Stop Twinkling grabs his unbandaged hand and asks for his help, as the ex-spy knows that they can't do this without him, so they all have to fight side by side. Stifling another cry, Deku begins to run, as Full Cowl begins to recharge inside his body.

Can't Stop Twinkling then pushes his friend forward as he's caught in a ball of rubble, but quickly blows it apart with Navel Laser before telling Deku to keep going and to not worry about him. Wanting to end things quickly, Eraser Head tries to get "Kurogiri" to warp Deku directly to "All For One", but the Nomu just sits there silently, as the dark mist completely overtakes his face and spills out from his collar.

Realizing that he can't help them now, Eraser Head asks the Heroes through his communicator to clear a path for Deku to take down "All For One". As he says this, "All For One" activates Omni-Factor Unleash, this time manifesting as a giant, fleshy laser cannon that fires a giant purple beam of energy directly at Deku. To the rescue comes Invisible Girl, who redirects and breaks up the laser with her body.

Not even a second later, Creati and Chargebolt hit "All For One" back with a supercharged round blasted by their Electromagnetic Rail Gun. Barely wavering at all, "All For One" fires a storm of giant spikes at the Heroes, breaking up the ground and sending several of them flying.

Deku tries to punch some of them back, but Sugarman, Cellophane, Vine, Spiral, Gevaudan, Tailman, and Anima jump in to shield the boy from the projectiles or destroy them, saying that he's better off conserving his strength for "All For One" since he's the only one strong enough to go toe-to-toe with the Villain.

Froppy and Tentacole then scoop up Deku with their tongue and arms respectively, as they carry Deku closer to "All For One" while leaping on top of the tendrils. While they manage to collectively toss Deku closer, the moment he lands back on the ground, a giant bundle of tendrils tries to smack him from behind. Fat Gum, Pinky, and Red Riot intercept it just in time and tell the boy to keep moving.

While reluctant due to his concern for everyone's safety, Deku keeps running. By combining Earphone Jack's Quirk with his directional speaker, Present Mic uses his Voice to shout a powerful sound blast that clears Deku's path towards "All For One", while Earphone Jack cheers for her classmate's success. Grape Juice, Battle Fist, and Real Steel also chip in to keep the student's progress from being halted.

Meanwhile, the Villain starts growing annoyed that the Heroes keep resisting and staying alive despite how withered they are. Noticing everyone has the exact same passionate look in their eyes as they do so, "All For One" realizes what makes them stand out from All Might, despite being several times weaker than the former No. 1 Hero: the strength that lies inside weakness, that forces people to keep getting up as long as they move forward.

As Deku almost stumbles again, his hand is caught by Ingenium, who's revving up his Engines. "All For One" then prepares to fire another attack at the two, but stops as dark fluid spills out of the hole in his palm and he feels his body begin to break down, making him shudder and widen his eyes.

Back in the city, Ethan and the other pilots from Star and Stripe's squadron meet up with All Might, surprised that their ejector seats worked since they remember disabling them beforehand. They planned on dying in their planes for their former comrade if they couldn't take down All For One in their earlier confrontation, and now realize that All Might secretly reversed that.

The battered ex-Hero says that the students are planning on achieving absolute victory in the war, meaning as few lives lost as possible, so planning a suicide mission would go against that. Ethan playfully scoffs at the injured man, alluding to how hypocritical it is coming from him.

All Might then raises his ragged fist in the rainy sky, thinking about the time Izuku ran towards the Sludge Villain to save Katsuki, which forced him to step up and take action despite the risk that came from going past his time limit. He then imagines his pupil jumping up in the air, and says that ever since that day, Deku has been his Hero.

Back at the fight, as Ingenium pushes his close friend forward, he says he now knows what Uravity meant about Deku's cruel nickname having a positive spin on it: that it's an inspiring name that can be read as someone doing their best and can motivate others to do the same. From the news helicopter, Pixie-Bob shows Uravity the livestream of Deku from her cellphone, with her instantly remembering the paradigm shift she gave to his nickname on their first day of school. Uravity then sheds tears and smiles, whispering for Deku to do his best.

Also watching the livestream abroad, the President of the United States decides to cast off his fears for the country's safety and sends every single available Hero to Japan's aid, despite his staff's concerns.

From the battlefield, as Deku keeps moving, he feels everyone's voices coursing through him. Whether it be his mother, friends, mentors, people he's saved, or those who were simply inspired by his efforts, everyone watching Deku screams out their support as he manages to make it to the Demon Lord.

Deku then jumps high in the air and charges up One For All into his right arm, before closing his fist and rearing his arm back for a devastating attack. While "All For One" tries to retaliate, Deku dives down and dodges the weaponized tendrils, and hits the Villain with a "Final Smash", breaking through the counterattack and crashing his fist right in the center of "All For One's" chest.

In these few seconds, "All For One" realizes how much slipped by him when he took over Tomura's body. He now realizes that Super Regeneration wouldn't have provided any help due to how emaciated this body is, and Danger Sense was of no use due to how many threats were surrounding him from all angles and dulling his senses. Finally, despite him taking over Tomura's body, the damage Deku and the vestiges did to this body, both physically and mentally, from the forceful transfer severely weakened its durability.

All that's left for him to try and stand up to is the raw strength that stockpiled through nine combined wielders of One For All, which easily blows his entire torso to bits and begins tearing his body to scraps. With "All For One's" body now hitting its limits, the Quirks he set loose in the wasteland begin to wither away.

Though once again, "All For One" is too stubborn to call it quits, as he tries to force his body into one piece by crudely stitching it together with his Quirks. The man can't stand this potentially being the true end for him, as he feels he's achieved nothing in regard to his dream of being the all-powerful Demon Lord that forces everyone to give anything and everything to him. While falling further into delirium, he frantically tries to decide his next move, as he considers starting all over again by implanting his vestige into one of the many Heroes fighting him right now.

Deku angrily jumps back towards "All For One", now being unable to further stand the man's tirade and actions. As Eraser Head calls back to him, "Kurogiri" spurs into action, this time back to the Villain's side. Despite Eraser Head and Present Mic successfully "turning" him into an ally, his artificial Nomu programming overrides it, and instinctively rushes over to "All For One" thinking he's Tomura while apologizing to the teachers for defying them.

"Kurogiri" forms a portal and prepares to swallow Deku's supercharged fist, while painfully begging "All For One" to give back his protege's body, as Spinner is waiting for him. From the dust, Dynamight flies in like a bolt of lightning, somehow making it from the city to Mt. Fuji using just his Explosive Speed, before biting down on "Kurogiri" and setting off an Explosion in his mouth.

With the last of his strength truly gone, Dynamight yells for Deku to never let himself be surpassed, as he can now finish this fight for good without any more interruptions. Deku yells out at "All For One", telling them that he's never going to forgive the Villain for all that he's done, but he doesn't see him as some type of incomprehensible monster.

"All For One" can only sit there and panic, begging Deku to get away from them, as the last few memories he had of him and Yoichi together rush back to him. The boy calls out "All For One" for what he really is: not a Demon Lord, but just a lonely old man and nothing else.

As Deku crushes his hand to bits and drills his fist into the Villain, All For One's vestige sits in darkness, as he remembers one of the few, inarguably positive memories he's had with his younger brother: when they were little kids, reading Captain Hero comic books together. In the void of his vestige realm, a piece of Yoichi's vestige that Deku hung on to just for this moment joins him, as both brothers speak to one another for the last time.

All For One rushes to the faint spark of his little brother, as he begins to break down and beg Yoichi to stay here and show his face, as he wants his sibling, one of his prized possessions and the few things he "loves", to keep looking at him. As the scars on the Villain's face melt down and reveal his actual appearance, Yoichi says it's inevitable that he'll fade away, even if Deku's embers managed to wake him up for a bit, as One For All's mission has been accomplished, and he's just a loose fragment of his former self.

He uses his final moments to tell his older brother that he failed to put him on a path towards making him a better person, and now is the time for All For One to pay for his endless cruelty and exploitation. Thanks to Deku's embers, Yoichi wasn't the only one to awaken, as the remaining vestiges of the One For All users rush in from behind, with an enraged Tomura at the center and outstretched hand.

With all their might, Deku and Tomura deliver the final blows in both the spiritual and physical realms simultaneously, destroying All For One's vestige and the body it stole in one punch.

In a void, Deku and Tomura find themselves alone again, with the fists they used to put an end to all the fighting gently meeting in the middle. The latter says he was positive he got reduced to nothing when his master took over his body, and believes his grandmother somehow rigged things to keep his spirit alive just for this moment.

Tomura's body starts to wither into the void, acknowledging that all he did was take his body back and never destroyed a single thing in the end. Now, he believes Deku was right about what he saw inside him deep down, as just a crying child asking for help and nothing more. Deku sadly looks down and says he had to fight Tomura, as he can't forgive the Villain for all that he's done. As Tomura's body changes to his appearance back during his early days as a Villain, Deku adds that he did so because he wanted Tomura to stop himself and put an end to the legacy of sorrow the young man was set up for.

Tomura asks Deku that, if he runs into Spinner again, to tell the heteromorph that his friend fought to destroy until the very end. Deku acknowledges his final request, and as the Villain's vestige almost completely fades away, he tells him one last thing.

In the real world, the sheer force of Deku's smash blasts through the thunderstorm, shooting into the sky with incredible power. The clouds split apart, and the storm fades, with a bright, shimmering sky that emerges from the harsh weather. As his classmates and teachers look up, they see Deku in the air, raising his fist confidently, as the remains of "All For One's" body turn into indiscernible specks.

With that final punch, the paramount war between the Heroes and Villains of Japan, and for the fate of the entire world, ends on the side of heroism, as a new future is opened up for everyone.

Anime & Manga Differences#

  • The anime shows that the "We Are Here" line was specifically said by Grape Juice, rather than implying that it was said by everyone present in the manga.
  • The anime extends the scene of Natsuo urging his remaining family to join the Heroes, showing Endeavor and Shoto standing up and deciding to keep fighting.
  • When Battle Fist is telling everyone to stick together, the anime shows her specifically speaking to several members of Class 1-B.
  • When Deku is telling Eraser Head that he gave up One For All, the anime cuts the flashback of him and All Might running along the beach.
  • When Deku explains he still has the embers of his Quirk left, the anime adds a visual of him clutching it with his hands, similar to the one of All Might doing the same during his fight with All For One in Kamino.
  • When Can't Stop Twinkling is caught by one of "All For One's" attacks while supporting Deku, the anime shows him blowing it apart with his Navel Laser.
  • When Invisible Girl blocks and redirects the laser fired by "All For One", the anime shows the beam completely breaking up and exploding after a few seconds. In the manga, Invisible Girl is still redirecting the move while Electromagnetic Rail Gun is being used.
  • The anime clearly shows the actual round that was fired by Electromagnetic Rail Gun.
  • The attack that Vine, Gevudan, Sugarman, Tailman, and Long Weizi all block was changed from tendrils of Rivet Stab to a barrage of projectiles.
  • After the attack blocked by Fat Gum, Pinky, and Red Riot, the anime extends the next set of establishing shots in a few ways:
  • Before the scene of Earphone Jack and Present Mic attacking "All For One", the anime adds a scene of them breaking up a tendril with a combination move, before cheering for Deku.
  • The anime adds Battle Fist punching a tendril away from intercepting Deku from behind with Big Fist, and Real Steel throwing one back with raw strength alone.
  • Before Grape Juice was shown knocked on the ground, the anime adds him sticking some tendrils to the ground with Pop Off, before getting knocked back while cheering for Deku.
  • After Gentle encourages Deku, the anime briefly shows him blocking a tendril with an elastic barrier.
  • When mentioning the moment Uravity shifted the meaning of Deku's nickname, the anime shows the full scene, while the manga only shows the dialogue.
  • The anime also shows Uravity fully crying, instead of just tearing up in the manga.
  • In the anime, the President of the United States orders reinforcements to Japan from the Oval Office, instead of an unspecified room in the manga.
  • The anime also shows the American flag with a completely new design.
  • As before, due to their addition to the cameos from the movie-original characters in Episode 156, the anime now shows Giulio telling Deku to do his best while Anna silently prays for him.
  • Katsuma and Mahoro are also included, who were absent in the manga.
  • The anime shows the moment Deku jumped up to close in on "All For One", and includes a scene of him winding up his final attack while the other Heroes cheer him on.
  • When All Might raises his fist and visualizes Deku jumping above, the anime shows the image of him fading from his current state to his appearance in middle school.
  • Before Inko tells her son to do his best, the anime shows her running towards the giant monitor.
  • After Inko cheers for Deku, the anime adds a short scene of the boy dodging "All For One's" attack before landing his hit on the Villain.
  • In the anime, "All For One's" Quirks are first shown eroding after Deku struck him the first time. In the manga, its not shown until the scene with Grand and Red Riot.
  • In the latter scene, the anime adds Tentacole, Froppy, and Grape Juice reacting to the development as well.
  • When "All For One" is talking about the vestiges of One For All, the anime adds visuals of them all punching the Villain in the same position that Deku currently is.
  • The image of All For One being overwhelmed by Danger Sense as a result of facing so many Heroes is cut.
  • When "All For One" tries to reconstruct himself, the anime shows him letting out a massive burst of energy before doing so.
  • When "All For One" considers hijacking another body to continue his plans in, the anime adds some more shots of the Heroes fighting.
  • When Present Mic sees "Kurogiri" going back to his villainous side to aid "All For One", the anime adds a brief image of Oboro playing with Sushi.
  • After Deku calls All For One a lonely man, the anime adds a flashback of him and Yoichi reading Captain Hero as children.
  • The anime extends the final moments by showing the clouds breaking up from and the Heroes' reaction to Deku's final smash.

Trivia#

  • Several moments in this episode are shown to parallel moments from previous episodes in the series:
  • The animation of Deku rushing towards "All For One" to attack him is reminiscent of how he used One For All for the first time to destroy a Villain Bot in Episode 4.
  • The animation of Inko running to tell Izuku to do his best is similar to when Izuku ran towards Katsuki in an attempt to rescue him from the Sludge Villain in Episode 2.
  • Rody is shown wearing his original set of sunglasses in the anime instead of his new pair of goggles, which first appeared in the Team-Up Missions series before being added to his design in the volume release of his manga cameo.
