Yoichi Shigaraki

ArticleSynopsisRelationshipsSource revision

Yoichi Shigaraki[1] was the younger twin brother of Zen Shigaraki, the infamous Quirk-stealing Villain known as All For One, as well as the first user and progenitor of the One For All Quirk.

Born during the era when Meta Abilities first manifested, he was presumed to be Quirkless, and could only watch as his brother committed atrocities. When his brother decided to forcefully implant the Power Stock Quirk within him, it was discovered that he really did have a Quirk, one with no other power than that it could be transferred to others. The merging of the two Quirks resulted in the creation of One For All.

Due to being physically weak, he was unable to make effective use of his new power, but after being slain by his brother, the Quirk was transferred to Toshitsugu Kudo, leading to a path of several successors inheriting the One For All Quirk in hopes that one day it will grow strong enough to stop his evil brother.

Appearance#

Yoichi was a young man with a sickly and malnourished appearance and a weak body, since birth. He had white, messy hair, similar to that of Tomura Shigaraki, which reached to about his shoulders, and his bangs usually obscured his bright green eyes.

During his lifetime, he dressed in simple clothes, wearing a white shirt and dark pants. He would occasionally be seen wearing a light blue jacket.

Personality#

Despite his weak body, Yoichi was recognized for having a strong sense of justice, which came into direct conflict with the ambition and megalomania of his older brother, Zen. In the past, Yoichi tried to stop his brother many times, as Zen killed whoever he came across while stealing their abilities. Despite being abused by his brother for trying to stand in his way, Yoichi still held hope that Zen had good in him, vaguely remembering how he held his hand when they were babies. The two brothers seemingly bonded over comic books, with Yoichi loving how they told stories using pictures. He was especially fond of the Captain Hero series, being inspired by the heroic main character.

Yoichi's hopes were dashed, however, when Zen killed the Luminescent Baby out of jealousy and declared his dream to rule the world, revealing how he was inspired to become a Demon Lord like the one from Captain Hero and even naming himself "All For One" after a phrase from the comic series. Yoichi refused to submit to his brother, despite the latter's constant attempts to bring him to his side, dismissing Yoichi's beliefs as ridiculous idealism. Even when he was physically weak and presumed to be powerless, Yoichi tried to resist his brother giving him a Quirk, not wanting a power that was stolen from someone else.

Upon escaping with resistance leaders, Kudo and Bruce, Yoichi was unfortunately found by his brother and soon killed in a possessive rage. However, his will continued to live on within his newly formed Quirk, One For All, that would be passed to his rescuers and later future successors who were all sworn to fight and put a stop to All For One's tyranny. While Yoichi doesn't openly hate All For One and still sees him as his brother, he is disgusted and ashamed by his cruel and selfish nature, lamenting that his ability to give and take could have been the kindest power in the whole world.[1]

Aside from his strained relationship with All For One, Yoichi is a friendly person and has a good relationship with all of his successors. He holds Izuku Midoriya in high regard, impressed by his conviction to help people in distress, even his enemies, and often voices his support for the younger hero. He also brought Kudo and Bruce to Izuku's side, despite them both initially refusing to acknowledge Izuku, reminding them both on how they once sought to kill him for his connection to All For One, only to save Yoichi instead while calling them both his heroes.

Once All For One is defeated by Katsuki Bakugo, Yoichi is not seen celebrating or relieved, but is only saddened by the fate his brother had chosen for himself. By the time All For One truly perishes, he remains with his Vestige until the very end and apologized that he could not guide him down the right path or manifest fully. In their final moments, Yoichi brought out an unseen side of All For One, with his Demon Lord façade crumbling and revealing his true lonely self as he shouted for his brother not to disappear. The two are then destroyed by Izuku, Tomura, and the other successors of One For All, finally ending their conflict for good.

Abilities#

Mental Fortitude: Yoichi had a strong sense of justice and was willing to stand against his evil older brother, despite his own weak body and his brother amassing a large collection of powerful Quirks and loyal followers. Even after All For One forced a Quirk on him and locked him up, Yoichi still longed to rid the world of his brother's evil. Several decades later, when All For One and Tomura tried to steal One For All from Izuku, Yoichi and Nana Shimura resisted them in the vestige world. Even Tomura was stunned by Yoichi's willpower, which expelled the villains from the vestige world, thwarting their attempt to steal One For All.

Meta Abilities#

One For All: When All For One forcibly implanted a power stockpiling Quirk within him, it merged with his own Quirk, which had no other power than that it could be transferred to someone else, creating One For All. Due to his sickly state, he was unable to make good use of the stockpiling power and instead decided to pass it on to other people in hopes that his new Quirk would get stronger over time.

  • Quirk Bestowal: Yoichi's original Meta Ability allowed him to transfer the Meta Ability itself to another person by having them ingest a sample of his DNA. It can only be transferred if the current holder willingly chooses to transfer it (making it the only Meta Ability that cannot be stolen by All For One), though the recipient does not have to agree. Initially, the Meta Ability was weak and unformed to the point of never fully manifesting, leading to the erroneous belief that Yoichi was Quirkless.
  • Power Stock: Under the false impression that his brother was Quirkless, All For One forcibly gave his brother a Meta Ability that allowed him to stockpile power. All For One stated that it was a Quirk that even Yoichi's weak body could handle.

As Quirk Factor types tend to run in families, Yoichi's Quirk Bestowal always had the ability to assimilate with the Quirks it came into contact with through transference, much like how his brother's Quirk could also take in multiple Quirks (though by directly and consciously stealing them). All For One confirmed this to be the case, stating that it absorbed and combined with Power Stock to make up for the strength it lacked.

Trivia#

  • Yoichi's surname contains the kanji for "death", "handle, grip", and "tree", while his first name contains "bestow" and "one", a reference to Yoichi being the first wielder of One For All.
  • All For One gave his brother the name "Yoichi" because he was the first thing ever given to him.[1]
  • Yoichi's English voice actor, Stephen Fu, also voices Seiji Shishikura.
  • Yoichi shares multiple traits with his adoptive nephew, Tomura Shigaraki, and the final successor of his Quirk, Izuku Midoriya.
  • With Tomura, Yoichi shares his white hair, being abused by a family member as a child, and being given a unique Quirk different from the one they were born with. Both also helped the One For All users defeat All For One in the Vestige realm near the end of their natural lives.
  • With Izuku, Yoichi shares his green eyes, an indomitable heroic nature despite his weak and scrawny body, and both of them ending up as Quirkless. Both were also deemed Quirkless as children, with Izuku having the actual condition, and Yoichi being misdiagnosed by All For One as such due to his Quirk Factor being severely underdeveloped.
  • Yoichi's background and history with All For One seem to have been inspired by the mythological story of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, with the two fulfilling these respective roles as brothers and the "founders" of superhuman society, analogous with the founding of the famous city. While no wolf or shepherd came to care for the twins like in the story, All For One did suck the remaining Quirk and nutrients from his mother's fresh corpse by a river as a reference to the famous portion where the Roman twins suckled from a she-wolf after being rescued from the Tiber. Romulus eventually wound up ruling Rome as its first king after murdering Remus (in some versions of the story at least). This matches the events in which All For One kills Yoichi and goes on to reign over the chaotic century of super-powered society that formed, only forced to retreat into the shadows after his first defeat at All Might's hands.

Quotes#

  • (To All For One) "You kept me alive. If only you could've found even a bit of compassion for others..."[1]
  • (To Kudo about All For One) "I couldn't put a stop to my brother. He only sees other human beings as playthings or as prizes to win."[1]
  • (About his brother's Quirk) "The ability to both give and take... could have been the kindest, most charitable power the world's ever known."[1]
  • (To Kudo over doubting Izuku) "A ridiculous delusion? Such a sad way to see it... Then tell me this... why, on that day... knowing full well of my ties to your "mortal enemy"... did you reach out to me? Our battle never could've begun if you hadn't taken me from this room on that day."[2]
  • (To Kudo when asked if Izuku can finish their battle) "Yes. One For All emerged from the will to resist my brother, but... The moment you reached your hand out to me... was when One For All was truly born."[2]
