Super Regeneration

ArticleSource revision

Super Regeneration, also known as Hyper-Regeneration or simply Regeneration,[1] is the Quirk used by Number 6 and the Multi-Armed Bomber, Upper-Tier Nomu such as the U.S.J. Nomu and the Eyeless Hosu Nomu, the High-End Nomu such as Hood and Woman, the Near High-End Nomu, and Tomura Shigaraki.

Description#

Super Regeneration has the ability to regenerate any sort of injuries on the user's body, such as missing limbs, at incredible speeds.[2]

It is considered an incredibly rare and dangerous Quirk thanks to its capability of making any of its users nearly invincible and able to recover from almost any attack.[3] The Quirk was artificially created by Doctor Kyudai Garaki and replicated multiple times to empower his Nomu army, with the goal of creating a perfected iteration for All For One.[4][3]

Weaknesses#

Super Regeneration's healing abilities are not absolute, as the Quirk cannot heal injuries that have already been cauterized by the time the Quirk is received or activated. Because of this, All For One would be unable to recover from the grievous injuries he received from his battle with All Might if he were to obtain Super Regeneration, and was instead forced to rely on a life-support mask and medical machinery to survive.[4] It also cannot heal damage done to the user's spirit.[5]

Likewise, it also cannot fix the damage done to Quirk Factors, as when New Order began rampaging against All For One's Quirk within Tomura's body, Super Regeneration couldn't repair the damage it did to both the Quirk and the body, and while it was able to regenerate Tomura's body after New Order's self-destruction, it could not fix the damaged or destroyed Quirks in All For One, resulting in a very painful natural healing of his Quirk Factors and lengthening the remaining time of Tomura's "perfect body" completion from one day to at least a week.[6]

Super Regeneration can be overpowered by either damaging the user faster than they can heal or completely incinerating them, as shown by Number 6 committing suicide by detonating himself,[7] Endeavor burning both the Eyeless Nomu and Hood to death using Hellflame,[8][9] Tomura disintegrating the High-End Nomu using Decay,[10] and both Endeavor and Star and Stripe's attempts to reduce Tomura to nothing with their Ultimate Moves.[11][12] In the latter case, though Tomura was able to survive being heavily charred by Star and Stripe's State-of-the-Art Hypersonic Intercontinental Cruise Punch and regenerate afterwards, this was only because he used a Nomu as a decoy to distract the X-66 fighter jet pilots while burying himself underground with Decay to mitigate the damage, and he admits that he would have died otherwise.[12]

Since Super Regeneration functions through brain activity, if the user's head is destroyed, or if they are knocked unconscious, they will be unable to regenerate. For the Nomu, their brain is their weak spot, as that is what Endeavor and the other Heroes targeted when they fought them.[8][9][13][10] Super Regeneration can also be bypassed by killing the user without physically hurting them, as shown by Star and Stripe's attempt to stop Tomura's heart with New Order.[14]

If the user's body is not properly prepared, the regeneration process can become a lot slower. When Tomura engaged the Heroes in battle, his chest suddenly ruptured open, and Super Regeneration did not take effect immediately. This was because Kyudai's procedure to artificially enhance him was only 75% complete, and as such, his body could not handle the full power of All For One, which limited the speed and efficiency of his regeneration. This allowed him to be worn down through repeated and relentless attacks that overwhelmed his regenerative capacity so much that he was unable to properly heal the sustained damage, requiring All For One's vestige to take control of Tomura's body just so he could recover enough to defend himself from the attacking Heroes and flee the scene, requiring several hours of rest until the Quirk healed enough of his body.

Apparently, the healing functions of Super Regeneration can also be halted if the user accumulates a large amount of damage both externally and internally, as in the final battle, when All For One took possession of Tomura's body after his last fight with Izuku Midoriya, his body began to shatter apart, unable to heal due to both the accumulated damage of the fight and the raw power of the forcibly transferred One For All.[15]

Usage#

Multi-Armed Bomber#

The Multi-Armed Bomber possesses a version of Regeneration that when used in conjunction with its Self-Detonation Quirk, allows itself to quickly regrow its arms whenever they are blown up.

The Bomber uses this during the Sky Egg Bombing to constantly barrage Captain Celebrity with a flurry of up to six-explosive punches at a time, nearly knocking him unconscious.[16][17]

Number 6#

Number 6 uses Regeneration in a very similar way to the Multi-Armed Bomber, being able to fill up one of his limbs with bombs, and detonate it on command, before swiftly regenerating the limbs back to normal, and repeating the process.[18] His other Quirk, Overclock, is used to speed up the healing process.[19] Number 6 also uses it to easily survive attacks like getting shot,[20] burned,[21] and having holes blasted into him by The Crawler's Knuckle Style while in Destruction Style,[22] and can come back from practically anything so long as his brain remains intact.[23][24][25]

U.S.J. Nomu#

The U.S.J. Nomu was created with the purpose of being able to match All Might in terms of strength.[26][2] This was accomplished through the sheer raw power it was imbued with, as well as its two Quirks, Shock Absorption, which allows it to absorb and blow back any attacks dealt to it,[27][26] and Super Regeneration, which can heal any deadly injuries. He displays the regenerative process after Shoto Todoroki's ice causes his limbs to fall off, and he simply regrows them back.[2] Despite this, All Might still managed to defeat him,[2] which Katsuki Bakugo surmised was because the Symbol of Peace had punched the Nomu faster than it could regenerate.[28]

Eyeless Hosu Nomu#

During the Hosu Incident, Endeavor engaged the Eyeless Nomu, and after witnessing its ability to regenerate, the Flame Hero burned its head faster than it could heal itself, killing it.[8]

Hood#

Hood uses Super Regeneration, in conjunction with his numerous amount of Quirks, to stand as a nearly unbeatable threat. During his battle with Endeavor and Hawks, Hood healed from several of Endeavor's attacks, such as a point-blank Jet Burn,[29] a burned arm, and being sliced to pieces by Hell Spider.[30] He even managed to survive Endeavor's Prominence Burn, which incinerated his entire body to ash, by decapitating himself and growing a new body.[1] However, Endeavor realized that destroying Hood's head would kill the Nomu, and he was able to burn him to death with PLUS ULTRA Prominence Burn, preventing him from regenerating.[9]

The High-Ends#

Each of the High-End Nomu awakened during the Paranormal Liberation War are imbued with Super Regeneration. This is the primary driving force behind making them the perfect soldiers, allowing them to take an endless amount of beatings and still continue to fight. This was shown when Woman and Chubs were able to regenerate their damaged limbs after they were kicked off by Mirko,[31] and when Woman healed from having her arm pierced by X-Less' Laser Quirk.[32]

However, they were still shown to be somewhat vulnerable, as Mirko deduced that the Nomu can be killed if their heads are crushed, which is how she was able to put an end to Robot.[13] They can still heal if their heads are only partially damaged, as Woman was able to regenerate from Gran Torino kicking half of her brain to pieces, though she was quickly disposed of by Endeavor's Jet Burn, which destroyed her head. The remaining High-Ends were also killed after Tomura awakened and used Decay on Jaku General Hospital, which disintegrated them.[10]

Several, but not all of the Near High-End Nomu also possess Super Regeneration, making them difficult to deal with.[33]

Tomura Shigaraki#

Tomura has demonstrated some of the most effective use of Super Regeneration, completely recovering from any deadly attack thrown at him, with his wounds stitching up almost instantly. With Super Regeneration, he was able to heal from Endeavor's intense flames, including Hell's Curtain,[34] recover from heavy damage dealt to him by the Heroes,[35] regrow his hands after they were blasted off by both Lady Nagant and Izuku,[36][37] and even survive Endeavor's PLUS ULTRA Prominence Burn, though he was only briefly exposed to it.[11]

Despite this, due to Tomura's process of receiving All For One being incomplete, his body could not handle all the power, so the speed and effectiveness of his regeneration was hindered, making him vulnerable to a more deadly assault.[38] His regeneration was also slowed down by several consecutive attacks from Izuku using 100% of One For All's power.[39] By the time his body was nearly at 100% completion, the Quirk allowed him to survive being blasted by several X-66 lasers,[14] and even a missile strike, albeit just barely. His regeneration was so potent that even the explosion of a jet at close range was deemed insufficient to kill him.[12] Along with his modified body and Decay, Super Regeneration proved difficult for Izuku to deal with,[40] though Tomura acknowledged that Izuku could damage him beyond repair if he chose to.[37]

Super Regeneration was one of the Quirks destroyed by New Order after his fight against Star and Stripe, though he got a replacement by taking one from one of the Near High-Ends.[41]

During Tomura's fight with Izuku, the embers of Star and Stripe's Vestige led the One For All users to a scar in Tomura's soul, which Star left there when she fought him. This scar was unable to be healed by Super Regeneration, which Izuku and the Vestiges took advantage of by forcibly transferring One For All and its assimilated Quirks into Tomura, which destroyed them and pried open the scar, shattering the hatred within Tomura's soul.[5] Later, during the climax of the final battle against All For One, after the Villain takes control of Tomura's body after his Vestige is seemingly destroyed, Super Regeneration is unable to function properly due to the accumulated damage Tomura received on the outside of his body, and on the inside due to the raw power of One For All.[15]

Trivia#

  • With 12 known users, Super Regeneration holds the record for the most users of any known Quirk, beating out One For All's 11.
  • After All For One used the Rewind Drug to survive being incinerated by Endeavor's Prominence Burn, he gained regenerative abilities similar to those granted by Super Regeneration, though at the cost of slowly being rewound out of existence. The speed of the rewinding effect also increased the more damage he was dealt.
