Phosphor, full name Flashfire Fist: Phosphor, is an Ultimate Move performed by Shoto and Dabi using the Half-Cold Half-Hot and Blueflame Quirks, respectively. It is an extension of the Ultimate move Flashfire Fist originally created by Endeavor.
Description#
When Shoto uses Phosphor, a large "X"-shaped flame (orange on the left and a turquoise-like color on the right) stretches outward from the center of his chest, crossing over his shoulders and cutting diagonally across his waist. The center of this flame is white, which Denki Kaminari says is not hot to touch. By using his heart as a generator to spread the chilled and hot blood throughout his circulatory system, Shoto can channel both halves of his Quirk to merge them into a single ability.
The move grants Shoto immunity to damage from heat-based Quirks, as well as an incredible defensive and offensive advantage against most opponents, especially those wielding pyrokinetic Quirks. The flames created by Phosphor are described as being a "cold fire" of sorts, allowing him to both burn and freeze his opponents. It takes a certain amount of concentration and focus to build up, so if Shoto loses control of it, he has to build it back up again.[1]
Phosphor was first shown being developed during a training session between members of Class 1-A in the U.A. courtyard. It is described by Shoto as his Quirk "coming together as one" to "create a body even Dabi can't burn".[2] He first named and used it while fighting Dabi during the Final War to protect himself from his brother's Jet Burn,[3] as well as to power two of his Ultimate Moves, Coldflame's Pale Blade and Great Glacial Aegir.[1]
After being seemingly defeated by Shoto using this technique, Dabi was able to replicate it using his own Quirk thanks to his eidetic memory, using it to reinvigorate his body and cancel out Shoto's ice that had incapacitated him.[4] It is later shown that Dabi manifested ice powers similar to his mother's Quirk and was using them to power his version of Phosphor.[5] Dabi's own "X"-shaped flame across his chest was purple, with a white center where his ice was located, though it was notably smaller than Shoto's.
Related Techniques#
Coldflame's Pale Blade: Shoto gathers Phosphor's cold flames on his fists to conjure large pieces of conjoined ice and fire into his hands, which he blasts together at his opponent. He then loosely shapes this conjoined ice and fire into a "blade" before striking with it in a large arc.[1]
Great Glacial Aegir: Shoto, while rushing his opponent, builds up his fire and ice on his right fist before punching them and unleashing a massive wave of cold fire, able to extinguish the hottest of flames, as well as cover a tremendous section of terrain completely in ice.[1]
Trivia#
- Shoto's appearance while using Phosphor resembles his father's first Hero Costume.
- Phosphor, as well as the kanji that makes up its name (燐) both refer fully to phosphorus, a chemical element that exists in two major categories: white and red. The former emits a faint glow when exposed to oxygen at a cold or room temperature, while the latter is created by a chemical reaction that occurs when white phosphorus is heated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius). Therefore, Phosphor's ability to combine both the fire and ice of Shoto's Quirk (signified by his red and white hair) is similar to the chemical element.
