Light Fades to Rain is the one hundred and forty-ninth episode of the My Hero Academia anime and the eleventh episode of the seventh season.
Summary#
After seeing how Dynamight and the heroes were defeated by "Tomura", Eraser Head asks Mandalay if Deku still has a long way to go to get there, but she replies that she can't contact him, as the electromagnetic waves are messing with their transmissions. With "Tomura" ready to finish him off, Shota calls out to anyone to save Dynamight.
While the other Heroes move in to try and cover Dynamight, "Tomura" takes the time to toy with the student, and kicks him upward before grabbing him by the throat. He tells Dynamight that having his Quirks erased turned out to be a blessing, as the boy would've been turned to dust instead of a corpse he can use for later. "Tomura" says that his dead body will be a great present for Deku to see once he makes it back to the Coffin in the Sky, and thinks about how much rage consumed him after his classmate was stabbed by him back in the Paranormal Liberation War.
As "Tomura" revs up to crush the boy with his mass of fingers, after telling him he's nothing compared to One For All, no matter how hard he tries to close the gap between them, the U.A. Big 3 move in to rescue Dynamight. Nejire Chan fires a Pike at the Villain, which she quickly redirects after "Tomura" uses the boy's body as a human shield.
"Tomura" is then stabbed in the shoulder with two scorpion tails popping out of a partially invisible Suneater's neck, thanks to a hybrid of Octopus Mirage and Scorpius Toxin. Suneater begins to pump a lethal dosage of venom into the Villain's body, which he immediately adapts to by sprouting a mouth on his arm and spitting the toxins out through it.
The swarm of fingers and now mouths explode outward to keep him and Dynamight isolated from the fighting. Lemillion then phases through them all and manages to secure Dynamight and pass him to Best Jeanist before activating Permeation again.
Lemillion tells "Tomura" that he was assigned as a messenger to the other Heroes and a guard for any additional Villains that might infiltrate the Coffin the Sky, but he's fighting the Villain anyway since he doesn't feel comfortable staying on the sidelines and not helping directly.
After hearing "Tomura" say he's fighting to destroy everything because the current system they're living under is a failure, Lemillion says the man is acting this way due to not having any friends. He tells "Tomura" that if he did then it would be obvious that certain things shouldn't be destroyed, before slugging the Villain which a punch coated in an energy blast made by Nejire Chan.
"Tomura" then flies into a childish tantrum, as the spirit of Tenko begins to leak through the Villain. He asserts to Lemillion that he does have friends and he knows nothing about him, since Mon always loves going on walks with him, and Mikkun and Tomo are nice and always want to play with him. Lemillion is taken aback and apologizes, wondering if he struck a nerve by accident, while "Tomura" realizes that despite his assurance, parts of Tomura still haven't been fully consumed by his meshed consciousness.
On the ground, Best Jeanist tries to get Dynamight to let him stitch his arm up, before he notices the boy tearing up. He tells the boy not to fret over his failure since he fought so well, but "Tomura" has reached a level where his training and combat experience can't do much at this point. Best Jeanist then flinches as he hears Dynamight muttering attack positions under his breath while small sparks of sweat drip off his body, astonished that the boy still has the drive to keep fighting after all that's transpired.
"Tomura" decides to not waste any more time before his new bodily complications worsen and starts walking away from Lemillion and re-focuses on the still downed Dynamight. Lemillion begins to panic while rushing through the ocean of fingers and mouths, as he and has friends strategized for him to rescue Dynamight and later stall "Tomura", while Suneater prepares a big attack to inflict some major damage on the Villain. Best Jeanist and Nejire Chan try to keep "Tomura" away from Dynamight, but the Villain easily ignores or deflects their moves while continuing his walk.
Despite the grim odds, Nejire Chan continues to carve through "Tomura's" growth while reminiscing on why she's fighting so relentlessly against her opponent. Back in middle school, she was frequently ostracized and bullied by her classmates, who mistook her curiosity about Quirks as her looking down on them for having weaker abilities in comparison to a powerful, flexible one like Wave Motion. She ended up shutting herself out emotionally from others because of it, which carried over to her first day at U.A.
That same day, Tamaki, taking some cues from when Mirio first met him in elementary school after moving, skittishly walked up to the intimidating-looking girl and asked her what Heroes she likes. She instantly returned back to her old self, and began showering her soon-to-be close friends with questions, which he and the rest of her classmates openly embraced. She always cherished that moment since then, since it allowed her to continue being open about her interests, meet Mirio and form the Big 3, and grow stronger overall.
If not, she would never be able realize the true power of Suneater's Vast Hybrid which she's stalling for as she fires a stray beam of energy in her friend's direction. As the dust clears, Suneater is shown funneling the energy into a mounted arm cannon made of the gargantuan amount of food he's eaten and is currently listing off.
Suneater stares down his target confidently, and thanks his friends and everyone else who have helped him on his journey to accept himself and fully live up to his and Manifest's potential. The boy fires his Plasma Cannon, which effortlessly carves through "Tomura's" fingers as the Villain struggles to shield himself before being punched by Lemillion, resulting in the villain being engulfed by the beam lawn-mowing across the battlefield and into the sky.
While most of the extra finger mass has been obliterated, the Heroes' bold strategy is once again shaken off by "Tomura", but the man quickly halts his rebound once he notices Dynamight calmly walking towards him. The boy, with blood gushing out of his head and fighting to stay alert, tells Best Jeanist to take care of the others while "telling" Deku, addressing his classmate by first name, that he has to win.
"Tomura" has no time to make a move, as Dynamight blasts off, disappears, and instantly reappears in front of the Villain's face before detonating a potent mass of stored Cluster explosions with his palm. Despite "Tomura" having regained his incredible speed, Dynamight easily dodges and keeps sending out explosions with exponentially increasing power and speed, since all his stored sweat has stopped leaking solely from his palms and are now forcing itself out of the boy's entire body.
Dynamight bears the excruciating pain as he continues to strategically assault and outmaneuver "Tomura", as realizes Deku has always felt way whenever he used One For All, even back when his classmate was much weaker compared to now. Dynamight asks Izuku if he's still able to catch up to him, as "Tomura" wonders why Dynamight is getting under his skin, while getting glimpses of back when All For One fought the Second User of One For All.
As the two opponents continue their fight, Katsuki envisions himself talking in a white void to All Might's One For All vestige. He apologizes to his idol for being a huge punk when they first met, and says that he's always wanted him to autograph his prized trading card he got when he was little.
While valiant, Dynamight's will caps out, as "Tomura" lands a devastating blow on the boy with his transformed right arm and sends him careening into the dirt. As the weather morphs into a grim thunderstorm, Best Jeanist rushes over to aid his protege. He and the other Heroes recoil at the horror in front of them: a pale Dynamight, holding a hazy, dead stare, and a massive, bloody hole where his heart should be.
