Farewell Party! is the twenty-second episode of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime and the ninth episode of the second season.
Summary#
Koichi and Kazuho are rushing to the Marukane Department Store for a FeatherHATS meeting, which the two are running late for due being let out late from work and school respectively. Catching up to them on their frantic commute is Captain Celebrity, who is flying around with Makoto in his arms. After they stop and the two explain their tardiness, Makoto asks them if they want a lift from Captain Celebrity, which they accept. Soon, the four of them speed off to their meeting, as Koichi complains about the winter cold now being intensified by the flight.
The group makes it to the store and their meeting room, as the Sisters of Saint Lila's Academy immediately rush to play with Captain Celebrity. Koichi is still shivering from the cold, as he's stumped by how Kazuho and Makoto went through the entire flight unaffected. He then asks Captain Celebrity if he feels the same, but the Hero, while juggling the Sisters, says he too his unbothered.
He explains that his Quirk allows him to coat his body with an aerodynamic field, which on top of granting him his flight, acts as a barrier that protects him from enemy attacks and elements brought on by the weather. He can even expand and share it with the people's he carrying to guard their bodies as well, which he's currently doing with the Sisters.
Koichi figures Captain Celebrity only shares his barriers with girls, but the Hero "argues" that he didn't leave the college student to die out in the freezing cold and claim that his barrier has a limit, like a blanket, and it would feel weird "cuddling" with guys over girls. Makoto then asks Koichi to keep the details of the Hero's Quirk off the record, and while the young man thinks its for image preservation, the woman clarifies that it's for protection from exploitation.
After the rest of the group arrives, Makoto then reviews the last event FeatherHATS held for the year and officially declares that the group's run has finished for the year. With all the business taken care, Makoto says that the last thing on the agenda is to kick off their Christmas party. With a quick setup, and the additions of Ichimoku, Jube, Teruo, and President Tanuki, the group parties in celebration of the holiday season and the end of a very eventful year.
After the party ends and most of the guests cleared out, Captain Celebrity is taking a nap on the couch with the Sisters, while Koichi, Kazuho, Makoto, Miu, and Yu clean up the place. The Hero then wakes up, and realizing the party's over, tries to ready himself for whatever work might be awaiting him afterward. Thankfully, Makoto says he has nothing lined up immediately but advises him to get his rest since he has tons of events lined up until New Year's Eve. While he's not necessarily looking forward to it, the man is willing to take his massive workload head on as usual.
Makoto throws him a light at the end of the tunnel, saying that his schedule should lighten by the time he returns to the United States next year. Captain Celebrity is shocked that his homecoming has a tangible time frame, remembering the massive pile lawsuits he racked up that forced him to find asylum in Japan. Makoto cheerfully informs her boss that all of his cases will be dealt with the following year, meaning that he won't be suspended from working in his home country and his licenses will be reinstated.
According to her, most of Captain Celebrity's lawsuits turned out to be fraudulent when assessed in court, due to them being a result of frivolous litigation, honeytraps, paparazzi collusions, and the fact that he is the type of person that's easy to sue based on demeanor. The woman says they were able to easily counter the cases in court because of these factors, as she smiles proudly and devilishly.
The Hero says he's glad someone like Makoto is working for him and not against him, but he doesn't think it'll be that easy to head home and pick up where he left off, especially due to how strained his marriage with Pamela is. Makoto then casually drops the bomb that the woman is due to give birth next month, suggesting that the new baby will give him a chance to talk things out with his wife and figure out how to proceed with their relationship. Understandably, Captain Celebrity freaks out and asks Makoto why nobody informed him.
The woman explains that Pamela personally requested her not to tell her husband about the pregnancy, and told Makoto, who is currently putting it in nicer terms for her boss, that her husband has a good heart but is too soft for his own good at times, and believes he will only have a right to raise his child alongside her once he proves his responsibility and fixes the huge legal mess he made.
Once Makoto heard Pamela's wishes, she put it on herself to get the man's life back on track in service of his growing family. The rest of the group wishes Captain Celebrity congratulations, as he begins to tear up from the great news. However, he gets a bit too excited and presses on of the Sisters up to his face while imagining his newborn baby, which makes the whole trio wake up and freak out at the man's "crude" behavior. As Makoto comforts the girls, she exhaustedly says this is why her boss is such a lightning rod for lawsuits.
After they finish cleaning up and night falls on them, Miu and Yu take off, and Makoto calls the Sisters a taxi to shuttle them home. After the girls leave, Captain Celebrity tells Makoto about how much he loves kids and asks her about the idea of him having them. His manager sheepishly tells him to discuss that with his wife, and not to say these things out loud to prevent anymore potential lawsuits.
Suddenly, a powerful gust of wind blows over the group, as a large, winged creature flies over them and in the direction of the taxi. It then picks up the car with its feet and flies off, tossing out the driver and leaving the Sisters panicking in the air. Koichi immediately springs into action and slides after them, with Captain Celebrity taking off shortly after. As the Hero closes in on them, the Scarred Man, who's watching from afar, says that he is making it too easy. The Villain presses a button labeled "Blast" on his phone, as the monster's stomach begins to glow orange and swell.
Just as the Hero makes it to the girls, the creature explodes, engulfing the taxi and the others. Thankfully, Captain Celebrity freefalls from the smoke, coating the girls in his barrier and taking the brunt of the explosion. The man takes a hard crash on the street, as Koichi and Kazuho check to make sure that he's okay. The Sisters then rush to Captain Celebrity, as the Hero checks to make sure they're okay.
Several bystanders who saw the explosion and the now-injured Hero start taking pictures and videos of the man. As Makoto weaves through the crowd to see her boss, Captain Celebrity weakly tries to shield his face from the cameras, saying he can't stand other people seeing him at his worst. Makoto disagrees, saying that Captain Celebrity has never looked better, as the Hero becomes dumbfounded and the civilians keep cheering him on.
Meanwhile, the Scarred Man looks at the file detailing the exploding monster, called a Bomber, and thinks about how useful it might be since it could be strong enough take down Captain Celebrity. While it's too early to claim that for sure, due to the aerodynamic barrier, Scarred Man says that the Hero's use of it means there's some kind of limit to its capabilities that can be taken advantage of. He then starts brainstorming a way to take him down for good and thinks a good starting point would be putting him against two or three Bombers at once, with several currently incubating in an unknown location.
On New Year's Day, All Might and Naomasa meet up again at Might Tower, with the No. 1 Hero wishing the detective well. The other man does the same and tells the Hero that their meetings won't be as frequent for a while. All Might thinks it's due to general work obligations, but Naomasa clarifies that a major breakthrough in his investigation into the Scarred Man and his Trigger operation requires his full attention, courtesy of a dealer list Eizo received from Knuckleduster. All Might offers to help out in any way he can, even offering to disguise himself as a burglar when jumping on the scene if the details are top secret, but Naomasa politely declines.
Later at Hoppers, Naomasa discusses the information with Eraser Head, though he tells the Hero that the Police Force is still lacking definitive leads on pinning down where the Villain Factory is primarily operating from. Jiro asks Eraser Head if he has any information that can allow the detective to narrow down a list of targets, with the Hero handing the detective a flash drive.
About a week prior, Koichi and Kazuho provided a report of their activities as the Naruhata Vigilantes, which was screened by Midnight over at Hoppers; albeit with the two feigning innocence to actually being the Vigilantes, Koichi especially revelling in it. Midnight states that most of their records could be seen as self-defense, with most of the real troublesome stuff coming from Knuckleduster, who they claim isn't affiliated with them. They intend to give it to the Police as an anonymous tip, with Midnight telling Koichi to "thank The Crawler", which he smugly prides himself in, to Eraser Head and the Hottas' embarrassment.
Back in the present, Naomasa is impressed at the depth of the information and asked where it was received, with Eraser Head only claiming that he doesn't know and that Midnight just asked for the flash drive to be passed along, as the Hotta Brothers laugh at the lie.
At the Marukane Department Store, Captain Celebrity, Makoto, and the entirety of FeatherHATS watch a news broadcast reporting on his confrontation with the Bomber, followed by a video of him officially announcing his return to the United States. Kazuho, Miu, and Yu also bring up how much that incident has boosted his approval rating and made him trend on social media, and the fact that all of his merch quickly sold out. Makoto then decides to take advantage of the buzz her boss drummed up and declares that there will be a venue change for Captain Celebrity's homecoming party.
She has moved them from the Naruhata Public Hall to the much larger and grander Tokyo Sky Egg, which makes Koichi and the Hero question if she can pull that off in such a tight deadline. Makoto then connivingly says that she already it set up by "twisting a lot of arms" so the group can't go back on it, and then warmly tells Captain Celebrity that the man deserves something spectacular for his final moments in Japan. The woman then adds that FeatherHATS will be performing at the venue right alongside them.
This causes the girls of the group to freak from the fact that they have to entertain a group of 50,000 people that are largely unfamiliar to them. The captain of the East Naruhata High Dance Squad tries to get them back in order by saying that they'll just have to train harder than ever for this show, but Captain Celebrity tells the group to take it easy and perform and prepare like they usually do. The man thinks the team is great the way they are and asks them not to take it too hard since it's his party at the end of the day. Kazuho appreciates his words but says she and the others don't mind showing off to begin with.
Since they're only going to one of many short acts off a very large show, Makoto asks them not to overdo things, with the Dance Squad captain recommending they choreograph a Captain Celebrity-themed dance routine, before transitioning into their Marukane Department Store jingle remix. Makoto also wants to add Captain Celebrity's cheerleaders to their group, as well as the boosters from the man's incredibly Japanese rebrand, and leaves a note to coordinate things properly later.
With the plan in motion, the entire group starts their rigorous training the very next day, while Captain Celebrity keeps up his appearances, and Makoto begins setting up the party's advertising and asking numerous Pro Heroes across Japan to be guests for the events, including Ingenium, Midnight, Present Mic, Best Jeanist, Ryukyu, Uwabami, Mirko, Edgeshot, Gang Orca, Snipe, Airjet, Manual, Death Arms, Wash, and the Wild, Wild Pussycats; Eraser Head says he'll come if he isn't busy and Endeavor immediately refuses.
On another busy night, Makoto gets home while setting up an appearance contract with another Hero. After getting settled in and looking at who she's recruited so far, she wonders if she could look into Heroes that work outside of the Tokyo metropolitan area and hopes she can snag All Might as a best-case scenario. Naomasa then walks in to greet his sister, and tells her he's about to head out again, as he just stopped by to take a bath and change out his clothes.
Makoto points out how busy her brother has been lately, with Naomasa pointing out the same thing and asks his little sister not to overdo things. The woman points out how huge of an opportunity this homecoming party is and asks for him to push her instead of constantly worrying about things. Naomasa does just that and says he's rooting for her as always, and as he grabs his coat and hat, Makoto tries to talk him into getting a connection with All Might's agency. Naomasa, as usual, denies her request, before rushing out as his little sister keeps begging for him to reconsider.
