Nemuri Kayama/Relationships

U.A. High School#

Faculty#

Shota Aizawa#

Despite outward appearances, Nemuri and Shota remain on good terms with each other. He has asked her to help his class in matters he couldn't be bothered with. They usually have a good relationship, and Shota doesn't bother with Nemuri's "enthusiastic" attitude towards youth, but he is annoyed when she makes decisions for him without his consent.

Nemuri and Shota attended U.A. together, with Nemuri in third year while Shota was in second. They formally met each other when Nemuri agreed to take in the abandoned kitten, Sushi, Oboro Shirakumo had rescued, with the two slightly bonding over their love for cats.[1] Alongside Oboro and Hizashi Yamada, the four became a tight knit friend group, discussing the potential of opening up a hero agency with all of them, something even Shota started to come around to.[2]

Shota and Oboro interned alongside Nemuri at His Purple Highness' agency, until Oboro's death by a Villain, mourning the loss alongside her friends.[3]

Nemuri is the reason why Shota is a teacher in the U.A. When Nemuri was personally requested by principal Nezu for the position of teacher, she submitted a recommendation to the principal for Shota, being accepted as a teacher, even though he had told her that the idea of him being a teacher is the epitome of irrationality.[4] They would continue to communicate back and forth regarding their respective personal lives and hero work, throwing various jobs regarding investigation of the Trigger drug to each other.

Once she starts working at U.A., Nemuri informs Shota of how wonderful the experience has been, and that Hizashi will be joining the following semester, teasing him that he's next, to his annoyance, though he eventually caves in and accepts the job.[5]

Nemuri continues to frequently text pictures of Sushi to Shota, which he secretly enjoys.[2]

Following the conclusion of the Paranormal Liberation War, Shota was notified of Nemuri's death and wanted to mourn her but focused on the status of his students. Regardless, he was still saddened by her death.[6]

Hizashi Yamada#

During their days as students in U.A. Nemuri and Hizashi got on relatively well, with her being Hizashi's senior. They later worked together as work-study students at the Purple Revolution Agency along with Shota and Oboro under the tutelage of His Purple Highness. Nemuri also mourned along with Hizashi and Shota after the death of Oboro Shirakumo, telling the two not to sit in the rain so they won't get sick.

Nemuri and Hizashi's friendship continued after they graduated and became professional Heroes, later getting jobs as teachers at U.A. High School.

After the Paranormal Liberation War, Hizashi is visibly upset over her death and mourns for her.

All Might#

Nemuri and All Might work together as teachers at U.A. High School, while they are not seen interacting often, Nemuri clearly respects All Might as Japan's No. 1 Pro Hero and the Symbol of Peace. After the U.A. Sports Festival concluded, Nemuri announced that All Might would present the medals to the winners, although she was apologetic for talking over him as the Symbol of Peace said his intro while jumping into the stadium.

Following All Might's retirement, their relationship remains mostly the same as colleagues and fellow teachers, although All Might is shown to be put off slightly by Nemuri's overenthusiasm towards her students. At the start of the Joint Training Arc, Mina Ashido teasingly asks if the two are dating, only for Nemuri to dismiss this, saying that she isn't interested in older men. Nemuri was also miffed by All Might's ringtone of his own voice and asked him when he would change it.

Former Schoolfriends#

Oboro Shirakumo#

Nemuri and Oboro had a positive relationship during their time at U.A. with Nemuri being Oboro's senior and Oboro showing to respect her a great deal. Nemuri also helped class 2-A's three dumbigos care for the stray cat Oboro rescued and took in, naming it Sushi after his favourite food. Oboro also openly admired Nemuri, with it being implied that he had a small crush on her.

Along with Shota and Hizashi, Nemuri and Oboro worked in a team of work-study students at the Purple Revolution Agency. She and Oboro worked well together despite the latter sometimes acting without thinking. Following Garvey's attack on the town they were patrolling, Nemuri was upset over Oboro's death, shedding tears while mourning for him along with Shota and Hizashi.

It is unknown if or when she became aware of Oboro's existence as Kurogiri or how she reacted.

Class 1-A#

Minoru Mineta#

During the First Term Final Exam, she was tasked to fight him along with Hanta Sero. She nearly used her Quirk on him but he was saved by Hanta. Midnight soon pursued him and took a sadistic joy in the act. However, Minoru admitted to being a fan of hers and knew about her Quirk from it. Using ingenious thinking, Minoru was not a victim to her Quirk and left her trapped as he dashed passed her and won the match. The Pro Hero was greatly impressed by his acts and complimented his strategy to best her.[7]

Momo Yaoyorozu#

Midnight admired Momo's strategy and leadership skills, admitting that Momo would make an excellent leader, despite her loss to Class 1-B.

During the Paranormal Liberation War, despite being seriously injured by Mr. Compress, Midnight told Momo that the best way to defeat Gigantomachia was to put him to sleep and entrusted the mission to her and the students while mentally telling herself that Momo will be a great leader, remembering her battle against Class 1-B before she died.

Following the war, Momo found her corpse alongside Mina Ashido, Eijiro Kirishima, and Rikido Sato, and she tearfully mourned her teacher's passing.[8]

Pro Heroes#

Mt. Lady#

Nemuri initially does not appear on good terms with her, as they got into an argument after Mt. Lady made comments on her liking attention. This further escalated with Mt. Lady admitted to looking up but poked at her age, resulting in the two fighting in the televised interview.

By the time of the Endeavor Agency Arc, the pair are shown to have at least learn to cooperate better, as they both took part in interviewing Class 1-A.

Vigilantes#

Kazuho Haneyama#

Midnight initially met Kazuho when she was one of the performers during the first Naruhata Festival at the Marukane Department Store, where she was a guest. When the power was damaged due to a villain attack, she was impressed by her ability to stand in front of the crowd and keep them calm waiting for the issues to be resolved.[9] She then checked out the next Narufest where she saw Kazuho once again preform, as well as also recognizing The Crawler as "Pop's manager".[10]

She formally met Kazuho in person for the first time, recognizing her as Pop☆Step, discovering she was secretly following Koichi, who had been invited to a mixer. It turns out that Midnight was investigating said mixer as suspicious of distributing a new variant of Trigger. Recognizing Kazuho's sense of jealously, and her obsession with youth and love, she requests her assistance, having them both infiltrate Koichi's mixer under fake identities.[11] After a series of incidents during the meeting, in which Koichi is unconsciously involved, they manage to solve the case and arrest the main suspect.[12]

Since then, they both became friends, with Midnight even giving Kazuho her cell phone number to call if she ever needs help.[13] Also, due to the love that Midnight has for passionate youth, it makes her support Kazuho's crush for Koichi.

When Kazuho was possessed by the Queen Bee, and transformed into the villain Bee☆Pop, Midnight went out on her own to do something to try and help her friend. After Koichi's battle where he rescues the nearly unconscious Kazuho, Midnight catches up to them, alongside Soga and his crew, who explain the situation to her when she offers her hand in assistance. She uses her Quirk on Kazuho and the remaining Queen Bee parasite, knocking the both unconscious and saving Kazuho's life. She then protects Kazuho, the boys, and Koichi from Endeavor when he arrives to stop Kazuho, saying she has already been apprehended and needs to be taken to a hospital.[14]

Once she's been admitted, Midnight stays alongside Kazuho's mother, out of concern for Kazuho's safety after being informed by Soga that she'd potentially be in danger, even suggesting she should be located to a higher security facility, even though she is in no condition to do so currently.[15]
