Rain and Cloud is the nineteenth episode of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime and the sixth episode of the second season.
Summary#
On a cloudy day in Naruhata, Eraser Head gets a phone call while he's on patrol. On the other end is Midnight, who is resting in her home while brushing an orange cat. Eraser Head asks her about the recent teaching job she started at U.A. High School, and Midnight has nothing but positive things to say about it.
She loves her students and how hardworking they are, she likes the curriculum she has to teach and really enjoys the fact that she's learning so much despite being an instructor. The woman believes that school is a place with a sense of belonging, though the man on the other end thinks otherwise, and feels like he can only remember the bad stuff about being a student.
For a while, Midnight has being trying to recruit Eraser Head as another teacher for the same school, which happens to be their alma matter. The woman says her friend shouldn't be so picky about it, since being a teacher is still a job. Eraser Head once again declines, but this only motivates Midnight to keep trying. She insists that her colleague would be a great teacher, but Eraser can't figure out where that assumption would come from.
The woman brings up that Present Mic is also going to be teacher at U.A. starting next semester, and considering how close they are, she feels its his turn to follow them. Eraser Head growls at the fact that Midnight is treating him and Mic as a unit and reaffirms his lack of interested to be a teacher. The woman says Present Mic insisted that Eraser Head would consider the offer, with the DJ saying his friend needs someone to push him in situations where he refuses to make up his mind.
Eraser Head angrily asks Midnight to tell Mic to keep his mouth shut, but she calmly says she agrees with the other man. She believes that Eraser Head is stuck in the past about something important and ignoring his future. The man's tone grows cold and quiet, and tells Midnight to also keep her mouth shut before ending the call. Eraser then hears some screaming civilians outside of the alley he was resting in and eagerly rushes back to continue his real work as a Hero.
Meanwhile, The Crawler is also out on patrol and currently running with a little girl in a red raincoat and a box containing a stray kitten in his arms, while trying to get away from a big bad Wolf Villain that's doped up on Trigger. After seeing that the Villain is catching up, The Crawler gives the kitten to the girl and tells her to make a break for it while he draws their pursuer away. While his plan works, the girl trips on the ground and accidentally slips her hold on the kitten.
Eraser Head then dives in and snags the girl and the kitten with his Capturing Weapon, while also using the cloth to bind the Villain by his snout and restrain him. The Crawler catches up and thanks the Hero for the help, with Eraser Head wondering what the Vigilante is up to. The Crawler explains that he spotted the girl who just came across the kitten and its box by a post, and while they were trying to figure out how to help the animal, the Villain popped out of nowhere and attacked them.
The girl thanks the two men for helping her before leaving and wishes them luck in finding the kitten a home. As Eraser Head is calling in the arrest of the Villain, rain begins to fall on them, so they both look for somewhere to take shelter.
After taking refuge under an awning, as Eraser Head asks The Crawler about how he's going to handle kitten. The college student considers taking it back to his place for now, with the Hero now questioning if he's going to keep it. The Crawler isn't sure at this point, which makes Eraser Head hammer in the full responsibility of taking care of the animal, such as feeding and cleaning up after it, veterinary expenses, and what will happen to the kitten after he eventually graduates, especially since cats can live up to twenty years old with sufficient care.
The Crawler admits he hasn't thought too far ahead, with Eraser Head advising him to put the kitten back where he found it if he won't commit to taking care of it. The Vigilante asks him if he dislikes cats, though Eraser Head clarifies he didn't say any of that for personal reasons. The Crawler says he asked that since the Hero never looked at the cat since they started talking, which shakes him up a bit. Eraser Head explains that there's no reason to get attached to the animal since he can't take care of it, so it's best not to get involved. The Crawler is taken back by how rational Eraser Head is, but the older man admits that it's not about that, but rather him knowing his own limits.
The Hero then thinks back to another rainy day several years in the past, back when he was a second-year student at U.A. On his way to school, he too spotted a stray kitten in the box and stared at it while figuring out what to with it. After some time passing, he eventually walked away from the kitten, though he left his umbrella over the box it was sitting in to keep the animal dry.
While he's a Hero, Eraser Head doesn't consider himself as someone who can solve everything like All Might and thinks people like him have limits on how they can individually impact others. Additionally, he feels that even now as an adult, he doesn't amount to very much as a person.
Eventually, Shota made it to Class 2-A, though he was a bit late and was expectedly soaked in rain. His teacher tells him to change his clothes, though Shota just says it fine and that his drenched state reflected his mood. The instructor grills him even more for risking his health by doing that, since it interferes with his job as a student and Hero-in-training.
As he takes his seat, Shota even wonders if he's even cut out to be a Hero. He thinks back to the kitten he left out in the rain and calls himself powerless. His classmate Hizashi hears his words and excitedly yells out about his friend drowning in another one of his pity parties and begins teasing him about it. The window then opens, as their other friend, Oboro Shirakumo, climbs in and cheerfully tells off Hizashi for annoying Shota.
As he steps off the Cloud he creates with his Quirk, the teacher scolds the boy for not entering through the door like the rest of his classmates. Oboro happily says it doesn't matter, since his Cloud Quirk comes in handy for things like these. After he shouts a request for a towel, with Hizashi loudly responding and aggravating the teacher as a result, Oboro turns his attention to Shota, returning the umbrella he left to his friend.
Shota is about to question him if there was anything underneath it, but is interrupted by Hizashi, who asks Oboro why he is taking off all his wet clothes in class. Everyone in the room freezes as they see Oboro completely naked, which causes most of the class to shriek in terror. Oboro plainly tells his classmates that wet underwear sucks to wear, but the students obviously ignore him and ask the boy to cover up.
Oboro then decides to put a positive spin on this by self-censoring his lower torso with his Cloud Quirk. He faces forward and begins reaching into the Cloud, proclaiming that he's about to show him the "tiny guy" that's hiding inside while blushing, angering the students even more. Thankfully, the only thing he pulls out is the stray cat Shota saw on his way to class, which instantly calms everyone down.
As roll call commences, Shota notices the rain has finally stopped, thinking about the fact that he couldn't even manage to save a cat that is now currently resting on one of Oboro's Clouds. While the boy wouldn't know it at the time, this summer would be start of his life beginning to change significantly.
After roll call, Class 2-A's teacher reminds his class about their Hero Work-Study programs taking place over the summer and reminds them to behave themselves when working with Pro Heroes. He then says for anyone who hasn't secured a spot to start thinking about getting one soon, and specifically points out Shota, Hizashi, and Oboro being the only three who haven't.
Afterwards, he unlocks the shelves that contain all the student's costumes, and tells them to suit up and head to the training ground for practical exercises with Class 2-B. The teacher clarifies that it's a great way for the students to establish their strengths and weaknesses, especially for those already set up for Work-Studies. He then tells those who feel like they're lagging behind, to use this as an opportunity to figure out the route they need the take to improve.
The training commences, consisting of 1-on-1 randomized combat practices, rescue training in a mock city, and a dance class to improve their ability to express themselves in order to connect better with the public and potential employers.
Several days later, the teachers in charge of the exercises discuss Shota, Oboro, and Hizashi's progress, at the request of their homeroom teacher. The woman who led the dance class thinks Hizashi will do fine from how flexible the application of his Voice Quirk is, though the man who led the rescue exercises believes it might make things difficult when it comes to settling on a niche. However, he feels if Hizashi manages to juggle all his strengths well, he could grow up to be a useful jack-of-all-trades.
The two then move on to Oboro Shirakumo, saying that while his academic performance leaves much to be desired, they trust that with his positive and willing attitude is a huge plus for him, and believe he'll do well if he's allowed to work at his own pace.
The group then moves on to Shota, who is currently jogging outside. The woman says he's great in academics and practical exams, but he doesn't have a clear image on what he wants to accomplish as a Hero and feels it will be a major roadblock for him when it comes to employment. Shota's teacher thinks it have something to do with his Erasure Quirk and brings up an incident that happened during the combat training.
Shota was fighting Sensoji from Class 2-B, and during their fight the former was knocked to the ground. While recovering, Sensoji walks up to Shota and complains that he's getting on his nerves. The other student can't understand what Erasure is good for and hates the fact that Shota resorts to relying on his Capturing Weapon after he nullifies his opponent's Quirk.
Sensoji then says that his opponent's problem is that he makes battles boring with his fighting style and ability and wants Shota to somehow make it so he can shine with his moves and Blast Quirk. The taller student then gets in Shota's face and pokes the top of his head, telling the other boy that his Quirk is useless if he can't do anything in a fistfight, and he can't coast by on gimmicks all the time.
Shota's teacher then blows a whistle and tells Sensoji to quit the harassment, as the other student gets up and walks back to his classmates. The man asks Shota what's wrong, but the boy just tells him he's fine. As he keeps walking, Shota wonders what Sensoji would even expect from him, considering how simple his Quirk is.
On another day, Shota is discussing how unimpressive Erasure is with Hizashi and Oboro when it comes to usefulness and outside appeal, while all three are having lunch. He feels trying to make the most of his ability is out of his reach, though Oboro thinks there's some potential in using Erasure to inconvenience Villains in combat.
Hizashi doubts that type of role fits Shota, but Oboro elaborates that superpowered combat typically boils down to how Quirks interact, so a power like Erasure would even out the playing field and make battles come down to close quarters combat. Shota considers it, but he feels like he's not good at fighting in that way.
Shota then stops the conversation as he notices Oboro trying to feed the stray kitten a piece of sushi, telling him that feeding cats human food is bad for them. Later on, Shota starts feeding the kitten a bottle of cat formula, while scolding Oboro for bringing it to school in the first place. He then asks where the kitten has been going to the bathroom, with Oboro humorously saying he's been going on his gym clothes.
Their conversation is then interrupted by a girl greeting them from above, with the trio looking up to see Nemuri sitting in her Hero Costume. She starts getting excited at the three breaking school rules by eating on the roof, before jumping down and landing in front of them. Oboro excitedly asks what the third year is doing here, with Nemuri explaining she just got back from her Work-Study and needs to take care of some paperwork. She adds that she just loves being on the roof to begin with.
Shota then points out her risqué Hero costume, which leaves her completely nude save for a trench coat, boots, sunglasses, and various other accessories, and asks if the girl should be wearing something under all that. Nemuri sees no problem with how she's dressed, with Shota wondering if it's some kind of "Emperor's New Clothes" bit where only smart people are able to see what she's wearing under the trenchcoat. Oboro openly proves him wrong by calling himself stupid and cheering at the fact that his upperclassman is butt naked.
Nemuri explains that her costume is a perfect combination of function and form when it comes to her movement and Quirk, so she proudly says she has nothing to be ashamed of. Shota just questions her logic, with a blushing Oboro telling him to lighten up and find the beauty in the girl's costume instead of shame.
Nemuri understands that Shota is just following what society thinks is correct and feels that people like her are meant to challenge and advance those norms. She then strikes a flashy pose and declares that she'll shatter the limit of what's deemed acceptable to wear for a Hero costume in a year's time. Unfortunately, in that time frame, a hot legal debate would eventually spawn out of that very issue, which led to more strict laws relating to how much skin one could show on costumes.
Nemuri turns her attention to the kitten and asks the boys to let her see it. She immediately grows soft and cuddles the animal while baby talking to him, before shifting her attitude back to normal and asking the trio if they gave the kitten a name. Oboro and Shota say no, so Nemuri tells them to rattle off their favorite foods. Oboro says sushi, Hizashi says fried chicken, and Shota says he doesn't have one. Nemuri thinks Oboro's is the best for a name, thus she names the kitten "Sushi" before hoisting the animal up and giving him kisses.
Oboro asks if she can home Sushi permanently, but the third year says she's planning on moving as soon as she graduates, so she can't guarantee any long-term investment in the kitten. The girl is also scared of living with Sushi from the fear of being written off as a crazy cat lady by men, since she's a young woman. Nemuri then rushes to the stairwell and says she'll foster him for a while as the boys look for a full-time owner, though Oboro and Hizashi bet she'll just fill the role eventually.
The next day, during another lunch period, Shota is complaining about Sushi's living situation to Oboro, saying that it's careless to hand over the cat so carelessly like they did with Nemuri. Oboro assures him that the girl will be responsible with Sushi, and laments that isn't really the best time for them to own a pet considering their Work-Study situation. Shota says Hizashi managed to get an offer at a combat-oriented agency and is getting details about it in the faculty office, which Oboro didn't expect given his interests and personality.
Nemuri then joins them on the roof again, with Oboro thanking her for taking in Sushi. The girl then plays a video of Sushi she took with her phone, which eventually shows the feces the animal made during a housebreaking attempt, disgusting the two boys. Oboro wonders if she just came here to show Sushi's housetraining, with the girl saying that it's not the case. Nemuri tells the duo that the Hero she's working under for her Work-Study has openings for students who still haven't secured one and offers the two to tag along with her.
Nemuri is currently assisting the Purple Revolution Agency, under the Hero His Purple Highness. After showing them a video of her mentor, Nemuri asks what the boys think of him. Both don't really know what to think of the flamboyant man, as Oboro simply says he's quite the character, with Nemuri assuring that it's the best part about the Hero.

Anime & Manga Differences#
- As a result of the anime adapting the School Days Arc prior to the Sky Egg Arc, the present day events occur in late Fall, as opposed to early Spring the following year in the manga.
- The anime adds more shots of Midnight during her phone call with Eraser Head.
- The anime more blatantly shows that the Wolf Villain is using Trigger when he attacks Koichi.
- The anime slighty extends the scene of the girl and the kitten falling, and Eraser Head rescuing them and stopping the Villain.
- In the anime, the Wolf Villain is tied up in front of store instead of the side of a building.
- The anime extends the scene of Shota's first encounter with Sushi.
- In the anime, all the students at U.A. are wearing their summer uniforms instead of their regular ones.
- When Oboro yells out for a towel, the anime shows Hizashi loudly offering him one before the teacher yells at the two. In the manga, it's only followed by the teacher telling Oboro to quickly dry off.
- The Cloud that Sushi is sleeping on during class is hovering in front of his desk in the anime instead of being planted on top of it.
- The anime extends Class 2-A's training montage.
- In the anime, the dance lessons show the students in their school tracksuits practicing basic moves. In the manga, they all wear their hero costumes, and the choreography was more elaborate.
- Nemuri's introduction is extended in the anime.
- After Shota comments on Nemuri's costume, the anime has Hizashi compliment his snark. In the manga, he points out that the comment is a self-burn.
- The anime doesn't name the specific law that was passed after the legal discussion around Hero costume exposure.
- After Nemuri offers Shota and Oboro to join her Work-Study program, the anime adds an original scene of her showing them a video of His Purple Highness and telling them about his office.
Trivia#
- This is the second instance of an anime in the franchise producing a story arc out of order, with the first being in the fifth season of the main series with the Endeavor Agency Arc and the Meta Liberation Army Arc.
- In that instance, the chronology of events remained the same, with the Meta Liberation Army Arc treated as a flashback, while the anime timeline adjusts it so the School Days Arc occurs first, followed by the Sky Egg Arc.
