Day-Tripping Down to Naniwa! is the fourteenth episode of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime and the first episode of the second season.
Summary#
One day, the East Naruhata High Dance Squad, the Sisters of Saint Lila's Academy, Miu, and Yu, are about to start their training regimen with a run. As the twins begin to stretch, Miu asks her sister why Pop isn't here, with Yu saying she went off on a trip to Osaka to attend an event highlighting local idols. The meaner twin sternly asks the nicer one to spill the details, which she regretfully does, especially since Makoto told Yu not to tell her sister to prevent any stints of jealousy.
As they continue their stretches and start their exercise, Yu says Makoto was too busy to be Pop's handler at the event, so Koichi went in her stead, still posing as her manager. Miu is doubtful that the college student is fit for the job, since she can effortlessly picture him as the type to get so engrossed in buying bento boxes that he'll miss the train to Osaka all together.
Unfortunately for Koichi and Pop, Miu was right as rain, as the young man runs after the speeding bullet train with his arms full of freshly bought bento boxes, while Pop screams from out the passenger window.
Eventually, Pop informs Makoto of the situation, who tells her not to panic, since she has all the necessary documents and information related to the trip, and the street idol can make it to the venue alone if Koichi doesn't catch up in time. As the train stops at Shinagawa Station, the door opens, which reveals a tired Koichi who somehow kept up with the vehicle, shocking Pop.
As their ride continues, Koichi debunks his friend's assumption that he somehow ran after a bullet train for several, uninterrupted minutes. After he broke into a full-on sprint, Koichi hopped off the platform using Slide and Glide and grabbed onto the train, as he nervously tried to not to fall off. He miraculously didn't, as the repellent force that comes out of his limbs suddenly reversed itself on the train's surface, acting like a magnet or a suction cup that stabilized his body.
Pop questions if a sudden Quirk evolution like that is even possible, but Koichi says it more like he figured out how to use his power differently and even thinks about times when he might've done the same thing unconsciously under normal conditions, like when he needs extra traction for curves or has to move upwind.
Eventually, the pair get off at the lively and bustling Osaka. As Koichi tests out his new wall crawling skills on a directory board, Pop reminds him to stay focused and not get into any more trouble. The two then hear a commotion down the road, and see a suspicious man running down the path. Hot on his tail is the BMI Hero: Fat Gum, whose currently eating a 36-pack of takoyaki, while nonchalantly remarking that he just arrested the guy not too long ago on an assault charge.
The suspect then turns around and fires his gun at him, which Fat Gum easily blocks with the back of his hand thanks to his Fat Absorption, though the box of food gets tossed into the air as a result. The Hero grabs the shooter and easily disarms him, before telling him that he's going to dish out on a punishment that matches the stunt he just pulled.
Fat Gum then forcefully finger flicks the man in the face six times, with the now bruised criminal crying that he only shot the Hero one time. Fat Gum then says the extra flicks were not for the shooting, but all six were for the giant order of takoyaki that just went to waste because of it. Koichi then pipes up and tells Fat Gum that all of food is unharmed, as he swiftly caught it all in the box all while the man was dealing with the thug.
Fat Gum then drops the man on the ground retrieves his snack, apologizing to the assaulter for using excessive force. As repayment, he offers the man a couple balls of takoyaki, though he's too succumbed by his injuries to even reply. Fat Gum then stuffs the piping hot, fried food into the criminal's mouth, leaving the man in the middle of the path with a swollen face and choking on the gift that's beginning to burn his lips.
With that business taken care off, Fat Gum walks alongside Koichi and Pop, and asks the two where they're heading on their visit. Koichi tells the Hero that he and his friend are headed to "SS Mall in Super Minami", which surprises Fat Gum since he's headed there too, though quickly silences himself from giving out too much sensitive information. After giving the two directions, Fat Gum bids them goodbye and heads off in the other direction.
Koichi and Pop eventually reach the venue, before making it to the green room. Koichi is impressed to see so many mascost idols, referring to them as weirdos, and Kazuho scolds him for calling them that. Then they are immediately greeted by cheerful young woman with red, crab-shaped hair, and thanks Pop for joining the show. She then playfully uses her hands to mimic and sound out the clipping of a crab's claws, before contorting her face to resemble the shell of a Heike crab and lowering her voice, which frightens the two new arrivals.
The woman then properly introduces herself as Monika Kaniyashiki, explaining that she just showed the two her tagline and is representing Kanidoge at the event as an idol. Koichi and Pop act on the sheepish side to her proper introduction, which only disappoints Monika, blaming it on city folk from Tokyo lacking a sense of humor. She quickly tries another bit by imitating an angry crab, though once again, the audience reception is lukewarm.
Moving on, Monika believes it's only a matter of time till the local idol craze hits and she's aiming to ride the wave using her act, emphasizing it by flashing her Heike crab face to Koichi and Pop, which scares them once more. The young woman then cheers for her and Pop to do her best today, before instantly moving on to another group, The Willows, and showing off her tagline to them. As the duo watches, Koichi wonders if she and Pop can work a catchphrase like that into their act, though the girl doubts it would fit with her type of performance.
Meanwhile, Fat Gum makes it to the venue and meets up with Naomasa and his men inside of a storage room, which is being used as a temporary surveillance room. The security camera feed around the building is being streamed to their monitors, as the group is trying to bust a major drug trafficking network that's allegedly doing a deal during the idol event.
Fat Gum wonders where an idea like this can even come from, with Naomasa explaining that short-term, free events like these tend to have comparatively lax security. As the idol carnival is about to kick off, Naomasa spots Pop on one of the cameras monitoring the green room. While he lacks specifics, the man recognizes her from Naruhata, and asks his men to keep an eye on her.
Later, Pop interprets the theme of Marukane Department Store in the Idol Show. Once he finishes her act, Koichi asks if she wants to head straight home, but the girl wants to stay, as Makoto advised her to check out the place in order get some material for any inspiration. Koichi and Pop then walk around the floor and check out the regional food and goods stands.
Suddenly, they hear someone call out to them from behind. They turn to find Monika by the Kanidoge stand, piloting a crab-shaped mech. Her manager explains to the surprised Koichi and Kazuho that they had remodeled the industrial lifting arms into a walking advertisement, and Monika insists it's her mascot costume, which leaves both Koichi and Kazuho confused.
Monika is then called to head for the stage in preparation for her act, and as she starts to rush there using her mech, she suddenly stops and complains that her stomach is bothering her. She tells her handler that she'll quickly run to the bathroom before her show starts, with the man warning her to be mindful of the small window of time.
After The Willows finish up their act, Monika's manager worriedly stares at his watch and walks up to Koichi and Pop, with the student asking if something's wrong.
Back in Naruhata, two men are being chased down by Eraser Head, who identifies them as the "Grasshopper Brothers": Ichiro and Jiro Hotta. Each brother then injects a vial of Trigger into their necks, before transforming into a pair of humanoid grasshoppers. With perfect synchronization, the siblings jump and somersault into the air, before diving towards Eraser Head with a Double Hotta Kick.
With a wide opening, and an immediate confirmation that the two have access to the drug, Eraser Head easily shuts down their attack with Erasure and binds them with his Capturing Weapon. He then sends the brothers to the pavement and prepares to question the two.
This chase came from a request made to him by Naomasa, back during the meeting with him and Midnight when they were discussing the situation with Teruo's new transformation. The detective asked for the two to aid him in a case pertaining to a rumored organization in Naruhata that supposedly deals with human experimentation, which they labeled with an internal name: the "Villain Factory". Naomasa requested that Eraser Head gather intel on this group, but the Hero rejected the offer, saying he prefers taking down bad guys instead of roleplaying as a private eye.
As the Heroes walked out of the police station, Midnight asked her colleague why he's so hesitant about helping Naomasa, since he has little reason not to and already lives near the search area. Additionally, due to his underground connections, she felt the man is near irreplaceable for this type of job.
Back to the present, Eraser Head says to the defeated twins that since he's not a police officer, anything they say isn't going to be recorded, and he will even write off their attack as self-defense to eliminate any grounds for arrest, since the Hero did sort of egg them on and their use of Trigger is legally grey. The brothers refuse to talk to the Hero, thinking he's trying to trick them. Eraser Head then shows the two some photos of a man and his transformed state that resembles a Mantis and asks if they recognize him. The two instantly recognize him as Kirihito Kamachi and exclaims that their associate has gone missing.
The Hotta Brothers take Eraser to their shop to continue speaking. Eraser Head explains that Kirihito was arrested by Captain Celebrity earlier in the summer, after he went on a rampage in the middle of the city. The brothers recall hearing about that attack, though they can't understand how he managed to grow so big, and suppose it has something to do with him regularly using a new dangerous mix of Trigger. They repeated begged their friend to not get hooked on it, but he ignored their warnings.
They then say that they only sell a legal version of Trigger made from the usual ingredients to people struggling with baldness and erectile dysfunction, though Eraser Head coldly points out that neither has a license to sell the stuff. The two shriek and try to pass themselves off as buyers for said issues instead of dealers, while the Hero elects to just ignore the issue and move on.
Eraser Head asks for any information and details about this new batch of Trigger, and the nature of where and how its sold, in exchange for a meeting with Kirihito. The man then questions them about one more thing: any information about something called the "Crab Route".
Back to SS Mall in Super Minami, Monika's handler is thanking Pop for agreeing to take over for his original performer in her absence, as the girl tries out the crab mech for the show. Koichi asks the man if it's okay for Pop to fill in for another idol, but he explains that Monika is just one of their traveling saleswomen, who he put down as an idol in order to fill in the info on the form. While the man admires her skills as a marketer, he says the only problem he has with her is that she tends to run off during work without warning, with no information on where she goes or when she will be returning.
Currently, Monika is still in the restroom, digging through the supply closet and speaking to Fat Gum through an earpiece, asking if she can still go on stage if they manage to snag some spare time. It turns out that Monika is actually an undercover cop working with Fat Gum on the exact same drug bust, and her trip to the bathroom was actually an excuse to suit up in her police gear. Monika tells Fat Gum that she believes she's more cut out to be a genuine idol than a member of the Police Force, with the Hero doubting she's qualified for either. She takes his words as him saying the world isn't ready for a "funny, beautiful, undercover idol", though the man says the only thing accurate about that is her being undercover.
Naomasa then informs Monika of several boxes of Kanidoge merch being unloaded at the entrance and asks her to confirm if the packages contain drugs being passed off as food products so they can officially commence with the raid. He tells the woman to be careful on her own, as she confidently loads her gun and heads towards the shipping site.

Anime & Manga Differences#
- The anime starts with narration by Koichi explaining the differences between regular people and Heroes in regard to Quirk usage, which was originally the introduction for Chapter 3.
- In the scene showing multiple citizens using their Quirks, the anime adds a man putting up a forcefield, a boy shooting lasers from his eyes, a girl firing an air blast from her mouth, and another boy emitting pink, ring-shaped energy from his own mouth. It also removes the man firing a laser cannon from his hand.
- The man with the stretchy arms, who originally resembled Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece using his Devil Fruit powers in the manga, has been redesigned with a different appearance for the anime.
- The anime adds more furniture to the shots of Koichi's room over the years.
- The anime significantly extends the section mentioning Vigilantes, with a full description of their role in society paired with a montage of the Naruhata Vigilantes and the Pro Heroes' work in the previous season.
- When Yu remembers what Makoto told her about keeping Pop's trip a secret from the Miu, the anime depicts it as a short flashback instead of just a speech bubble with the woman's face.
- When Miu assumes Koichi would miss the train in the middle of buying bento boxes, the anime shows him doing just that.
- The anime extends Koichi running after and eventually clinging on to the train.
- The anime adds more establishing shots of Osaka.
- When Koichi and Kazuho arrive in Osaka, the latter is carrying a suitcase in the anime.
- Fat Gum's Quirk is introduced in the anime after he blocks the bullet fired by his suspect.
- After Fat Gum apologizes to the thug for flicking him, the anime adds the Hero stuffing the takoyaki he offered him into his mouth.
- After Fat Gum leaves, the anime adds a moment of Kazuho and Koichi commenting on his appearance and behavior.
- When Monika first shows off her act to Koichi and Pop, the anime shows their reaction to her "Heike crab" face.
- When Monika leaves to meet The Willows, the anime shows them as a group of female performers, instead of just being addressed offscreen. When it cuts to Pop and Koichi discussing catchphrases, Monika can be heard showing The Willows her act off camera.
- When Fat Gum and Naomasa meet up, the anime has them shake hands.
- When showing the surveillance feed, the anime shows more cameras recording several other parts of the venue, instead of just the green room cameras highlighting Monika and Pop. They're also arranged in a grid instead of paneled individually.
- Pop's performance is extended in the anime, and many of her fans are present in the crowd.
- The anime shows the end of The Willows' performance after Monika leaves for the bathroom.
- In the manga, Monika's handler is right next to Koichi and Pop as he checks the time and looks to them. In the anime, he walks up to them while checking the time, with Koichi asking if something's wrong.
- In the anime, Eraser Head says that Ichiro and Jiro are colloquially known as the "Grasshopper Brothers".
- In the anime, Ichiro and Jiro inject Trigger and transform at the exact same time. In the manga, Ichiro has already transformed offscreen while Jiro is shown injecting Trigger before transforming.
- In line with Naomasa, Midnight, and Eraser Head's meeting now taking place in a police station instead of the second Narufest, the anime shows them discussing the Villain Factory in the same setup.
- Likewise, the anime doesn't show Naomasa walking with the Heroes, as it's replaced by Midnight and Eraser Head leaving the station. Also as a result, the moment of Midnight reassuring Naomasa of her colleague's dedication is omitted.
- The anime cuts the scene of Eraser Head complaining about Midnight volunteering him for the Villain Factory investigation, while sitting on Jiro.
- The anime shows Monika getting into her police uniform after Pop and Koichi try out the crab mech, instead of before.
