History#
Rody Soul was born in the European country of Otheon. He is the son of Eddie Soul, a famous engineer, and has two little siblings, Roro and Lala Soul. His mother died shortly after his sister Lala was born, and since his father had to be absent due to his job, from a very young age Rody had to take care of Roro and Lala while his father was at work. Even so, Rody's early childhood years were happy, playing with his siblings and friends, and dreaming of one day being an airplane pilot.
As thanks, one day his father Eddie gave him a puzzle box to solve, although he had to help him a bit to do so. Upon opening the box, Rody was surprised to see that inside it contained his father's locket necklace. Eddie explains that it is a thank you gift for always taking care of his siblings.
A few years later, for some incomprehensible reason, Eddie decided to abandon his three children to join Humarise, a sect that considers Quirks a disease and was involved in several incidents. Because of this, the Soul children were banished from school, and their neighbors and acquaintances began to badmouth them, preventing their kids from playing with them. One day, they returned home to find their house heavily vandalized, with the walls painted with insults and their windows smashed in. Because of the stigma, Rody couldn't even get an honest job to support himself and his siblings.
With no choice, the Souls abandoned their home and went to live in a dilapidated caravan located in the shantytown of Otheon. This situation caused Rody to generate enormous resentment towards his father, to the point of breaking the locket he gave him. He promised his sobbing siblings that he would always be there for them no matter what.
The new life in the slums began very difficult for Rody. He frequently got into trouble and suffered beatings from the most disagreeable residents of that area of the city, on some occasions to protect Roro and Lala. Since Otheon's heroes don't get much profit from working in that impoverished town, Rody gained a low opinion of them, considering them only interested in helping others only for the sake of fame and money.
In order to earn some money to support his two siblings, Rody had to give up his dreams of being a pilot, and do some shenanigans and petty criminal jobs, frequently visiting Stanleyk's Bar to ask for these odd jobs. Years of a life of crime made Rody develop great parkour skills, as well as extensive knowledge of the city of Otheon.
Also, at some point, Rody manifested his Quirk, Soul, taking the form of a small pink bird which he gave the name Pino. Rody feels a bit embarrassed by his Quirk, as Pino reflects his true feelings and intentions, making it very difficult for him to lie and deceive others. However, his bird companion has also proven to be very useful from time to time, both with "working" and helping him take care of his siblings and play with them.[1]
Synopsis#
My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission#
Rody tells Roro and Lala that he needs to go to work, so he asks them to study, if he doesn't come home till late, to make food, and to ignore any strangers who try to talk to them. Rody and Pino say goodbye to them and go to Stanleyk's Bar. Once there, after paying a small fee, Rody asks if he has any jobs for him. Stanleyk replies that he has to courier a briefcase full of stolen jewellery, telling him where he will receive the merchandise and the place where he has to deliver it.
When Rody asks how much he will get for it, Stanleyk reminds him that he is not in a position to negotiate and he has to do it for the asking fee. Pino protests this, but Rody silences the bird and accepts the job. As soon as he leaves the bar, as a little payback for his treatment, Rody steals Stanleyk's bike, ignoring his protests and reminding him that the bike is stolen anyway, although he promises to return it to its true owner.
Rody arrives at the agreed place where he should receive the briefcase, but due to the delay of his contacts he begins to wonder if the information Stanleyk gave him is wrong. Suddenly, he hears some ruckus, and as he peeks around the corner, one of the villains he's supposed to meet up with speeds past him and hands him the briefcase before running away. Rody is a bit confused, but after seeing a hero, Shoto, chase after the villain, he quickly understands what is going on and runs off with the case in his hands.
He is spotted by Izuku Midoriya, who immediately goes after him, but thanks to his athletic skills and his better knowledge of the streets and alleys of Otheon, Rody manages to avoid capture and manages to evade him. Still, Izuku doesn't give up and tries to find him again. As Rody is about to go under a bridge, a car crash occurs on it, and he is nearly crushed by the falling debris, losing the briefcase during the scuffle.
The street urchin gets over the shock and picks up the briefcase, running off again. At that moment Izuku appears, attracted by the accident, so he flees through the subway station when he realizes that Izuku has managed to find him. Rody gets on a train just as it leaves, thinking that he has finally managed to give Izuku the slip, not realizing that he is running after the train at full speed, managing to catch up to it. Rody and Pino are shocked to see Izuku clinging to the windshield.
At the next subway stop, Izuku asks an irked Rody why he ran off. Evasively, Rody replies that he was in a hurry because of work, and tries to leave. Izuku demands to show him the contents of his briefcase, but Rody refuses to comply, arguing that he is a foreign hero with no authority in Otheon and that he could sue him to the police for harassment. Even so, Izuku insists on checking the briefcase. Rody demands that Izuku pay him to check inside and the hero says that he will, but when Rody demands a large remittance, Izuku says that its too much. The hero then tries to take it from him by force, although when Pino attacks him, he suddenly lets go of it, causing it to fall to the ground and accidentally open.
Izuku, and especially Rody, are completely dumbfounded to see that the briefcase does not contain stolen jewellery, but papers, documents, and books. Izuku profusely apologizes to Rody for mistakenly considering him to be an ally of the jewel thieves he was chasing. Rody awkwardly accepts his apology, feigning nonchalant for the misunderstanding but deep inside he is completely freaked out that he doesn't have the briefcase with the stolen jewellery.
He then realizes that in the previous car crash it must have been mixed-up with another briefcase similar to his. Hardly able to contain his jitteriness and concerned about his screw-up, Rody says goodbye to Izuku and leaves the subway. He frets over having to tell the villains that he lost their stolen goods and intends to go back to the crash site to retrieve the briefcase, although he fears that someone else has taken it.
Seeing him completely nervous, Izuku follows him and asks if everything is alright. Rody tries to brush him off, but as soon as they leave the subway station, a large police force appears and orders them to surrender. Rody is both confused and scared to see so many police officers pointing their guns at him. Izuku tries to defuse the situation, but Rody proceeds to run away, clutching the briefcase strongly. The police respond with a shoot-to-kill order and begin to fire at Izuku and Rody.
Izuku grabs Rody and escapes with him by swinging throughout the city with Blackwhip, avoiding the police cars, and landing on the roof of a train. Both are without a scratch, although Rody is still stunned by the frightful experience, while Izuku wonders why the police shot at them.
When the train passes through a bridge, a Humarise agent, Beros, attacks them with her Longbow Quirk from the other shore. Izuku grabs Rody again and swings across the bridge dodging the arrows. Unfortunately, this dangerous experience is too much for Rody, who passes out from the shock and falls onto the highway along with the briefcase. Izuku manages to grab both before they crash to the ground. More police cars appear to chase them, so Izuku escapes by jumping into the river and flees by diving under the water, taking the unconscious Rody with him.
Izuku manages to reach ashore where Rody recovers, while he contacts his teammates from the Endeavor Agency to tell them everything that just happened. When he feels better, Rody approaches Izuku to ask him if he has been able to talk to his team, startling to see that he is a little jumpy, and is confused when he sees him remove the battery from his phone. Izuku explains the difficult situation they are in: they are both wanted criminals throughout Otheon.
The country's police have declared Izuku responsible for the murder of twelve people, showing his face and name on television, while Rody is considered an accomplice in his crimes, although without saying who he is and without showing his face. Rody is completely mad about this, and demands Izuku explain how his life went south in such a way, only to be completely despondent when he can't give him a clear answer. Izuku deduces that since both the police and a villain attacked them, they didn't care if they are dead or alive, which means that what they want is the briefcase that Rody is carrying.
The two boys inspect the briefcase and its contents, but nothing of importance is uncovered. Rody suggests to give the briefcase to them to settle everything, but Izuku advises against it because those who want it would kill them anyway. Rody then suggests burning the briefcase, but Izuku dismisses it as it wouldn't change their situation. As a last option, Rody suggests giving the case to the police in exchange for a large amount of money, something Izuku is totally against because that would make them real criminals.
Rody is completely despondent that he has no way to get rid of the briefcase, and thinks that Izuku is overreacting about them being silenced. Izuku considers that they should not get rid of the case because it must be related to some sort of a crime. Rody angrily tells him that he doesn't want to get involved in it, but Izuku reminds him that they're both already involved. The point is that someone wants them dead, and not knowing why is why they can't act rashly.
Rody then asks him what they should do, so Izuku suggests to avoid the police patrols and make their way to the neighboring country of Klayd, where the Otheon police have no jurisdiction. When he asks what will happen if the villains attack them, Izuku promises he will protect him.
Since his face has not been shown to the public, Rody is in charge of buying clothes for the two, with which they can dress up and go unnoticed by anyone and the police. Rody suggests getting on the roof of a bus to go to the border for free, but Izuku says they have to pay like anyone else, which Rody thinks is silly since they are now wanted criminals, climbing onto the bus, with Izuku following suit.
Rody takes the opportunity to make fun of Izuku, saying that he is committing a petty crime by getting a free ride. A little upset by Rody's statement, with discretion and skill, Izuku pays in advance for the two, though Rody reminds him that riding on the roof isn't okay either. Izuku can't deny this fact.
During the trip, Izuku sends a coded message to Shoto to inform him of their destination, while Rody can't stop looking at a photo of his younger siblings, worried about them. During a stop, Rody asks Izuku for permission to make a phone call, and Izuku agrees but asks him to make it short.
Rody phones Stanleyk and asks him to go to his house to give a message to his siblings, but the barman is furious that the jewellery delivery has not been carried out, so he refuses to do the favor, much to Rody's frustration when he attempts to explain. Izuku asks if there is a problem, and Rody lies, saying that nothing is wrong.
After several hours traveling, Izuku and Rody take a break inside of an old farmhouse to get some rest for the night. Checking a map, Izuku mentions that the only way to get to the border is with a vehicle or by walking. Rody doesn't like the last option because the briefcase is very heavy, but Izuku replies if he gets tired he will carry him on his back, saying that his strength is to help those who are in trouble. Joking, Rody tells him to help him then, although Izuku promises him that he will.
They both go to sleep, but Rody can't stop thinking about Roro and Lala, remembering how much they suffered when their father abandoned them, and anguished leaving them alone. Unable to bear the idea of his siblings suffering even more for not being with them, Rody takes the briefcase while Izuku sleeps. Pino vigorously shows her distaste for his action, but Rody chooses to ignore his bird companion's protests and goes off to secretly report to the police. Pino manages to wake up Izuku and take him to where Rody is.
Outside, Rody sees a search helicopter arrive, thinking it's the police, unaware that they are members of Humarise, warned by their allies infiltrated in the police force. Rody hands one of them the briefcase. However, the agent of Humarise, Rogone, transforms into a giant beast, planning to kill him for supposedly knowing the secrets of the briefcase. The terrified Rody pleads for his life, assuring him that he knows nothing and just wants to return to his siblings, but the cultist ignores his pleas.
Fortunately for Rody, Izuku arrives and after a little struggle, he defeats Rogone, knocking him back into the helicopter. After defeating the villain, Izuku runs towards Rody, who he thinks is going to attack him, but is actually doing it to protect him from the arrow the other Humarise agent, Beros, had just shot at him, completely shocking Rody. The villainess is about to shoot another arrow, but Izuku is faster and attacks her with a St. Louis Smash Air Force, generating a cloud of dust to allow him and Rody to escape with the briefcase.
Once they are safe, Izuku removes the arrow and asks Rody to use his first aid kit to treat the wound, which is not very deep because his mobile phone acted as a shield, albeit with it now being destroyed. Rody does as he asks, and once Izuku's wound is bandaged, they both hide in a cave. Puzzled by the fact Izuku risked his life for him, Rody asks Izuku why he protected him despite having been betrayed, when he could have fled on his own with the briefcase, reminding him that he already was a criminal who participated in the theft of jewels that led them to this situation.
Izuku honestly replies that whenever someone is in danger, he will try to help them no matter what kind of person they are, and without worrying that he might get hurt. Rody is bewildered by his way of thinking, and Izuku explains that's because he admires All Might and wants to become a hero as great as him. Rody says that they couldn't be more different, as he has had to abandon his dreams of being a pilot to provide for his siblings.
He tells Izuku that he doesn't think highly of heroes, believing that they just want to make money under the guise of saving people, since none of them showed up to help him when he was in trouble in Otheon's shantytown. However, Izuku has shown him that not all heroes are like that, and the more he helps him, the more he wonders what he is doing with his life, considering himself lame because of it. Izuku replies that he considers himself lame as well, because he has always had trouble controlling his Quirk, needing the help of others to achieve his goals. That's why he tries so hard to become a hero who saves everyone with a smile.
His words make Rody open up to him and formally introducing himself as Rody Soul and his companion bird as Pino, while Izuku does the same, and that his hero name is Deku. After this, the two go to sleep.
The next morning, Izuku wakes up hearing a vehicle approaching, alerting himself in case it's a villain, but it's just Rody in an old van. Rody explains that since there is still a long way to the border, he has decided to "borrow" it from an old farm, leaving the owner a note that he will pay for it later in the name of the World Heroes Association. Rody wishes it was a aircraft, and Izuku asks if he knows how to fly one, but he says he's just kidding.
Rody and Izuku begin their trip to Klayd, growing closer to each other. Rody tells Izuku about his family and how he and his siblings were abandoned by everyone after his father suddenly left to join Humarise. He resented his father for this, but after a while, he stopped caring. Now his only concern is his siblings Roro and Lala, stating that they are the most important things in life for him.
The trip continues with little incidents, traveling by secondary routes and even cross country. One night, while changing Izuku's bandages, he asks Rody what his Quirk is. He refuses to tell him, but after making Izuku promise that he won't laugh, he tells him his Quirk is actually Pino, who is the manifestation of his soul that shows the emotions that he is actually feeling. He considers the Quirk embarrassing, but Izuku tells him it's great, to his surprise.
Finally, after several days of travelling, Izuku and Rody reach to the Otheon-Klayd border in a canyon, only to find out that the only way to get across is heavily guarded by the police. Not wanting to face them, Izuku suggests to climb up the rocky formations in order to cross into the neighboring country undetected.
Rody considers that it's better if he leaves him there and goes alone with the case. Izuku doesn't want to since the van has run out of gas, but Rody assures Izuku that he can manage while he waits for him until he comes back, once he figures out the case's secrets. Izuku is about to accept Rody's idea when they are spotted by Humarise's helicopter, where Beros and Sidero start attacking them.
Izuku grabs Rody to prevent him from getting hurt, and tries to shoot down the helicopter with a Delaware Smash Air Force. During the scuffle, Rody loses the briefcase and when he goes to pick it up, he is nearly crushed by Sidero's Iron Ball Quirk. The shock wave causes both him and the briefcase to almost fall off the cliff, holding on to the edge with one hand while holding the case with the other.
The villain is ready to kill him with another one of his giant metal spheres, and despite the dire situation, Rody throws the briefcase at Izuku, but Beros shoots several arrows at the young hero to prevent him for helping. Sidero is about to crush Rody just as he begins to fall off the cliff. Luckily he is saved by Shoto, freezing Sidero as well, while Katsuki chases after Beros. Izuku's classmates continue to fight the villains until they manage to defeat them and the helicopter ends up crashing due to the damage sustained.
In the aftermath, Katsuki and Shoto meet up with Izuku, who introduces them to Rody. Shoto and Katsuki explain to both of them that those who were chasing and attacking them are members of Humarise, something that until now they were unaware of, and that they want to recover the briefcase for some reason. Izuku realizes that the battle caused a secret compartment in the briefcase to open. After getting far enough away from the battlefield, they find the compartment concealed a small puzzle-box.
The three U.A. students try to solve it without success, until Rody remembers that it is exactly like one his father had given him years ago, so he offers to solve it, and manages to solve the puzzle and open the box, uncovering inside a strange device and a microSD. The four decide to cross the border to Klayd and investigate the information it contains.
The four head to the nearest town in Klayd to investigate it, discovering a message from Alan Kay, a scientist who was kidnapped by Humarise and forced to create the Trigger Bombs in exchange for not harming his loved ones. He reveals their leader, Flect Turn's, true plan to lure all the heroes into a world-scale trap and kill them all with the Trigger Bombs, thus throwing the world into a chaotic anarchy and societal collapse that would benefit Humarise and his plan to exterminate all the Quirk users.
Fortunately, he also reveals that the card is actually a key to disarm all the Trigger Bombs. It was created by his colleague, Eddie Soul, who like him was also kidnapped and forced to work for the terrorist organization. He was killed shortly after his treachery was discovered. This revelation has a profound effect on Rody, since he finally understands that his father never abandoned him and his siblings, and until the last moment of his life he was always taking care of them. Although he doesn't show his feelings, Pino can't stop crying.
Lured by a scream, the four watch on TV that Flect Turn has already set its plan in motion, planting Trigger Bombs in twenty-five cities around the world, and that they will explode in less than two hours. Rody is horrified to learn that Otheon capital is one of the threatened cities, and that his siblings are still there.
The four boys understand that it is up to them to shut down the devices. After looking through the files, they discover Humarise's main base where the control system that would allow them to defuse the bombs is located, several levels underground. The place is 400 kilometers from where they are, but Rody gets the idea to go to the airport and "borrow" a light plane to take them to the place. During the flight, Pino is nervous, but Rody assures his bird companion that he knows the basics of piloting it.
They finally fly over the Humarise base, leaving less than 30 minutes to stop the detonation. Izuku, Katsuki, and Shoto gear up in their hero costumes and ask Rody to fly back, before jumping out of the plane to storm the base. Rody, however, ignores their warnings and lands carelessly in a nearby forest. He wants to help too, but before he can get too far, several Humarise soldiers stop him and take him to the base.
During the assault, Katsuki and Shoto stay behind to deal some of Humarise commanders, while Izuku, after overcoming many obstacles and defeating the soldiers who tried to stop him, arrives at the place where Flect Turn is. In order to stop the detonation, Izuku confronts him, but the villain proves to be more powerful than expected and he ends up seriously injured. Izuku can barely stand but Rody enters the room and prevents him from falling to the ground.
Izuku is surprised to see him there, but Rody assures him that everything is fine and takes the deactivation key from his pack. He reveals that Humarise have promised him not to detonate the Trigger Bomb on Otheon in exchange for handing them over the key. Izuku claims him that it is still possible to stop them, but Rody replies he can't win, and that he is willing to do anything in order to protect the lives of his siblings, just like his father did years ago.
Rody asks Flect Turn if his father also had to make a difficult decision to protect his family, which the villain confirms and says that Eddie helped him develop the Trigger Bombs. Upset by this last statement, Rody accuses him that he kidnapped him and threatened his children to force him to create those weapons, something that Flect claims helped him make the right decision, just as he is doing now.
Izuku feels despondent at Rody's betrayal, but then he sees Pino hiding in Rody's hood. Recalling the conversation he had with him days ago about the bird reflecting Rody's true intentions and feelings, he realizes that Rody is faking it. As he is about to hand over the deactivation key to Flect Turn, Rody flips it and launches it into the air, momentarily distracting the villain as Pino signals Izuku to attack.
Pino catches the key in her beak, and she and Rody run towards the control room, as Izuku holds back Flect Turn. Enraged for being fooled, the villain repels Izuku and activates the room's laser defense systems. Rody manages to dodge the shots and Izuku destroys several of the laser guns with his Delaware Smash, but in the end, Rody is horribly wounded by one of the shots. Still, Rody continues on his way to the control room, claiming that he will defuse the bombs and asks Izuku to kick Flect's ass. The villain tries to stop him, but Izuku gets in his way.
Despite his boast, Rody barely makes it to the control room, leaving a trail of blood in his path. In the end, due his severe injury, Rody passes out and Pino begins to fade, bleeding out before he is able to insert the shutdown device, with only a few minutes left for the Trigger Bombs to detonate.
Seeing Rody's laying body from the room he is fighting, Flect mocks him for his failure, saying he has died for nothing, just like his father. Enraged by the villains' words, Izuku attacks him more fiercely than before, assuring him that he believes in Rody, ensuring that he won't give up just like he won't either. After a hard fight, Izuku finally manages to defeat Flect Turn, and immediately rushes to the control room to help Rody as the detonation countdown is about to end.
Upon reaching the control room, Izuku is glad to see that Rody is still alive, and had managed to get Pino to insert the deactivation card into the computer, defusing all the Trigger Bombs with less than a second left for them to explode. Izuku congratulates him for saving the lives of millions of people, and asks him to hold on until he can take him to a hospital. A semiconscious Rody asks him if he has managed to protect his family, and Izuku replies he did, saying he is amazing. Rody then says that it will make him look really cool, and both of the young men laugh and cry having just saved the world.
With the terrorist plot foiled and imminent destruction averted, it was a decisive victory for the heroes worldwide. All members of Humarise are defeated and sent to prison, and the sect is dismantled. A group of police and heroes arrive at the Humarise headquarters and rescue Izuku and Rody, as well as Katsuki and Shoto, who were also injured from their clashes with the Humarise commanders, and send the four boys immediately to a hospital to heal them. While he is recovering, Rody is visited by his siblings, Roro and Lala, who cannot contain their tears when they see their older brother again.
After recovering from his injuries, the members of the Endeavor Agency prepare to head back to Japan. Rody decides to leave the hospital one day before to say goodbye to Izuku at the airport. Izuku asks him what he is going to do now and he replies that he will probably go back to his normal life, although it will not be simple or interesting, but both. Rody pretends to be glad that Izuku is going back to Japan so he won't bother him again, but from Pino's reaction, Izuku knows that Rody truly will miss him. Izuku hugs him and bids a farewell, promising that one day he will come back to visit him.
After this, Rody decides to stop being a crook and gets a real job to help his siblings. He goes to Stanleyk's Bar to ask the owner if he has any work for him, but this time nothing to do with crime, just a respectable one for him. Stanleyk tells him that one of his employees quit and needs someone to replace him, something that Rody accepts without hesitation.
With his family no longer outcasts from society, Roro and Lala are allowed to return to school and are finally able to make friends with kids their age. Rody starts working as a bartender, continuing to care for Roro and Lala and making sure they are happy, while also studying aviation in his spare time, hoping to become a pilot someday.[1]
Final War Arc#
Several months later, Rody and his siblings watch on their computers and phones the live broadcasts of the Final War between the Heroes and Villains in Japan, including Izuku's battle against Tomura Shigaraki.[2]
Eventually, the Heroes in Japan are winning every battle one after another until the only one that remains was between Izuku and Tomura. He watches the heroes help Izuku get through "All For One"'s attacks so he can get close and finish the fight for good. As Rody watched Izuku, he tells him to "do your best".[3]
Epilogue Arc#
Sometime after the Final War, Rody was able to achieve his dream of becoming a pilot.
