Flect Turn

ArticleSynopsisSource revision

Flect Turn is a villain and the main antagonist of My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission. He was the leader of the global cult Humarise, which subscribes to the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory and aims to eliminate Quirks from the world.

Appearance#

Flect Turn is a tall and slim man with luminescent light blue skin, a shaved head of dark blue hair, and a goatee mustache and arrow-shaped earrings. Due to his Quirk, he wears special dark blue eye masks that shape around his lids and fits into his sockets, which prevents light from reflecting off his eyes and blinding him.[1]

He wears a red robe, a golden belt, two glove-like prosthesis accompanied with fingertips, his pants are also grey and he wears combat boots. His clothes have small disks in which he contains the energy of his Quirk, his villain costume is a long white cloak with dark red parts inside.

When his Quirk reaches its limit, Flect Turn's blue coating of reflective energy dissipates, revealing that his true skin color underneath is a flesh white pigmentation.

Personality#

Flect is a cold, calculated, and charismatic extremist, obsessively focused on the notion of destroying the Quirk society. He views Quirks as a disease to mankind and lived by the Quirk Singularity theory, believing that Quirks would eventually fall out of control and bring doom to humanity. He preaches that aiding in "humanity's salvation" is the only way to atone for being "afflicted" with a Quirk, and he considers Quirkless people to be "pure human beings" who are endangered of dying out as they marry Quirk users. He is incredibly ruthless, as he kidnapped a number of scientists to aid in his plans, threatening the lives of their families if they refused to comply with him. Despite the brutality of his methods, he views them as a necessary way to preserve mankind and as the only way he could cleanse it, possessing not even an ounce of remorse for his actions.

This hateful disposition towards Quirks and the hero society was due to his upbringing and early life. Because of his Reflect Quirk, everyone who touched him would get hurt, resulting in him never forming any sort of emotional bond and watching as his parents, friends, and loved ones left him one after the other. He saw first hand that Quirks have clouded the judgement of humanity as the majority wouldn't notice the ones struggling with their newfound power. Flect was obsessed with the idea of destroying Quirks, no matter how many lives it took, seeing it as a way to save others from his own pain and misery. As the head of his cult, Flect carries himself with a religious and fanatical mindset, viewing himself as the world's savior and prophet. Nonetheless, he is just as ruthless to those who oppose him, believing that the "gravely afflicted" are beyond help.

Even so, Flect shows that he isn't without reason and is capable of reaching a compromise with other people, so long as they honor their promises and don't turn on him. While he threatened the lives of Eddie Soul's children, he did leave them unharmed when Eddie swore his allegiance to Humarise and helped the cult develop the Trigger Bombs. However, he promptly had Eddie executed upon discovering that the engineer had secretly made a disarming key for the bombs in hopes of stopping his genocidal plans, showing that he does not suffer traitors. Flect also offered a deal to Rody Soul that he would not detonate the Trigger Bombs in Otheon and spare the lives of his younger siblings if he turned over the disarming key to him, commending Rody for making what he called an "honorable choice".

Flect also has a subtle sadistic side, having summoned projection feeds of all the different countries where his Trigger Bombs were hidden so he could watch the "baptism" of his genocide unfold, but also so that Deku could watch all his friends die. Likewise, while he commended Rody for turning over the disarming key, he was outraged when this was revealed to be a trick to get him to lower his guard. Flect soon watched a wounded Rody pass out from blood loss, saying that he would die in vain just like his father.

Despite his self-righteousness, Flect Turn is ultimately a hypocrite in many ways, as despite viewing Quirks as a sickness and saying that he rejects his own, he and his followers have no compunction in using their Quirks to aid in their plans. While he claims that he loves humanity and wishes to save it, he is willing to force the Quirks of innocent people to go berserk using deadly amounts of Ideo Trigger, all while watching the bloodshed and mass destruction of his actions unfold. These hypocritical values have also reached his acolytes, as while some of his followers genuinely believe his ideals, others simply joined him so their lives would be spared from his genocidal plans. Perhaps worst of all, by forcing people to lose control of their Quirks, he is causing the very thing that the Quirk Doomsday theory predicts and the apocalypse that he claims he is trying to stop.

In the end, Flect is a twisted, remorseless, and incorrigible villain who was determined to push his misery onto everyone else rather than help people like himself. Deku pointed this out, saying that Flect could have tried harder to connect with others instead of giving up to his despair and turning to evil. Even then however, Flect refused to waver or see the wrong of his actions, referring to the young hero as filth and declaring his hatred for Quirk society.

Abilities#

Overall Abilities: As the leader of Humarise, Flect was regarded as a dangerous and extremely powerful villain who led his followers with a steadfast and charismatic approach. With his Quirk rendering him near-impervious to any physical harm, Flect was able to effortlessly contend with Deku, a hero-in-training and one of Class 1-A's strongest students, whose Quirk grants him superhuman strength and speed. In combat, Flect primarily relied on his Quirk to counter any oncoming attack while aided by his base's turrets to fend off and wear down his enemy. He didn't even need to touch Deku himself to reflect his attacks and send him flying backwards. He could control the mirrors on his Arachne Exoskeleton with enough precision to reflect his turrets laser beams to strike Deku and severely wound him multiple times during their fight. In more drastic circumstances, Flect was able to engage in close combat as well, to the point where Deku had to use One For All at its fullest power to defeat him.

Genius Intellect: Flect is a tactical genius, carefully manipulating and planning the destruction of Quirk society for several years. He easily manipulated several aspects of his grand plan, effortlessly predicting the heroes' plans on his arrest and evading capture. He also revealed the cities where his Trigger Bombs were located in a global broadcast, causing mass panic in the process which made searching and locating the explosives more difficult for the heroes. In truth, the concealed bombs were meant as traps for the heroes as well, intending to wipe them all out, and he had members of his cult armed to defend the bombs should they have been found.

Leadership Skills: Flect held invaluable leadership skills, having been charismatic enough to rally together his cult, Humarise, being comprised of thousands of members in hideouts all over the world. Many of his followers were genuinely devoted to his cause, believing in his goal to spread humanity's "salvation". At the same time, he was fully capable of controlling people through threats and intimidation, as he did with the scientists he kidnapped such as Alan Kay and Eddie Soul.

Vast Connections: Being the leader of Humarise, Flect held connections with his cult's various branches all over the world. He was shown to have hired Trigger smugglers in Japan to aid the preparations for his grand plan. Most notably however, Otheon's chief of police was also secretly affiliated with Flect. This allowed him to mobilize Otheon's police to track Deku and Rody Soul, having put the former on the nation's most wanted list as a suspect for mass murder, all in an effort to retrieve the deactivation key for Humarise's Trigger Bombs.

Quirk#

Reflect: Flect's Quirk allows him to reflect any attack and its effect back at its user. He can also store the attack to use later, rather than just reflecting it immediately. This Quirk isn't well suited for enduring several powerful attacks and will wear out in prolonged battles. A more powerful attack cannot be reflected by the Quirk, showcased when he couldn't reflect Deku's United States of World Smash in the climax of their battle.

This Quirk is constantly active, and anything that touches Flect will be reflected away from him, even without his intent.

Equipment#

Arachne:[1] Flect has a high-tech support item that is worn like a belt around the waist with nodes that lead up his spine. Protruding from the spinal frame are four segmented mechanical arms with spiked mirrors on the ends that can be used in conjunction with his Quirk. He can channel absorbed energy through the mirrors to act as thrusters, allowing him to hover and navigate in the air.

Activation Key: Flect possessed an activation key for the Trigger Bombs that took the appearance of a modern-styled dagger. It was activated by Flect holding the dagger upwards and pressing a button on the hilt, causing a blue stone on the blade to shine and detonate the bombs.

Trivia#

  • Flect Turn's name is derived from the words "reflect" and "return", which mirror his Quirk's ability.
  • Flect Turn resembles Thaal Sinestro from DC Comics' Green Lantern. Both villains are similar in terms of appearance, use fearmongering to aid in their goals, and are obsessed with spreading their dominion as well as wiping out all who outcasted them from their respective societies.
  • Flect Turn shares many similarities with Overhaul:
  • Both are leaders of villainous organizations (the Humarise cult and the Shie Hassaikai, respectively), maintaining control through fear and manipulation. In Flect's case, some followers genuinely believe in his ideology, whereas Overhaul's subordinates are largely coerced or disposable in his eyes.
  • Both believe that Quirks are a "disease"; Flect views Quirks as a literal plague that will bring about humanity's downfall through the Quirk Singularity, while Overhaul believes Quirks have "infected" society with delusions of heroism and villainy.
  • Despite condemning Quirks, both rely on their own abilities; Overhaul uses his eponymous Quirk in combat and to further his plans, even as he seeks to erase Quirks entirely, while Flect uses his Reflect Quirk to protect himself and directs an army of Quirk users to enact his genocidal plans.
  • Both exhibit a messiah complex; Overhaul considers himself the one who can "cleanse" society and restore the yakuza's former glory, whereas Flect Turn sees himself as humanity's savior and prophet, tasked with purifying the world by eradicating Quirk users.
  • Both abuse and manipulate others to achieve their goals; Overhaul subjected Eri to repeated physical and psychological torture to exploit her Rewind Quirk for his Quirk-Destroying Drug, while Flect kidnapped Eddie Soul, threatened his children, and executed him after discovering he created a failsafe for the Trigger Bombs.
  • Both incorporate drug-based weapons into their plans; Overhaul developed Quirk-erasing bullets using Eri's cells, while Flect uses the Trigger drug to force Quirks into uncontrollable overloads.
  • Both of their ideologies ultimately undermine their own goals; Flect's efforts to "purify" humanity end up accelerating the chaos predicted by the Quirk doomsday he wanted to prevent, while Overhaul is ironically rendered Quirkless by Tomura Shigaraki, who dismembers him using Decay, making him a victim of the very future he sought to create.
  • Neither ever admits fault or shows remorse for their core actions; Overhaul mourns the Shie Hassaikai Boss but never repents for his abuse of Eri, while Flect refuses to accept Deku's offer of empathy, instead reaffirming his hatred of Quirk society to the very end.
  • Both are ultimately defeated by Deku, who overpowers them unleashing 100% of One For All.
  • Flect Turn shares his birthday with Monika Kaniyashiki and Simon Gollini.

Quotes#

  • (To Humarise) "Why were superhuman powers, the Meta Abilities known so casually as Quirks forced upon our kind? Why was the first Meta Human, the Shining Baby, born onto us? These Quirks bring about nothing but tragedy. They are not a blessing on our world, but the beginning of its end! It is foretold in the Quirk Doomsday Theory. As generations pass, powers mix and evolve. Eventually none will be able to control their abilities. In this hour of need, eighty percent of humanity is sick with Quirks. How many of the remaining pure humans will have relations with Quirk holders? Spawning more who are cursed with this blight. Our extinction is nigh at hand. We, Humarise, must take action. Even if it means dying the earth red with blood, that will simply be our righteous burden to bear. For humanity's salvation."
  • (To Beros) "Unfortunate, but so be it. We'll take the necessary precautions, you shall continue tracking it down. Don't forget Beros, there is only one way for those possessed by the demon of sickness to atone, and that is to give one's self to the cause of saving humanity."
  • (To Deku upon infiltrating his stronghold) "How dare you. This is not a place where someone so diseased should set foot. You have entered a holy stronghold that will bring about the salvation of humanity."
  • (To Deku) "I reject the corruption within my veins. I will eradicate this global contamination before it's too late! By doing so, I will save the worthy. The pure humans will rise to power once again!"
  • "You wretched soul. In mere minutes, the baptism will begin. The blood of Heroes will cleanse this broken world. And their deaths will bring about a glorious new reality."
  • (To Rody about his father) "Fortunately, he had the clarity to make the right decision. And it appears you're a wise man just like your father. You're protecting your loved ones. An honourable choice. I commend you. We're quite alike. I developed this plan because I love humanity and wish to save it."
  • (Watching Rody pass out after tricking him) "For both father and son to die in vain. There's no hope for such fetid scum."
  • (Upon realizing his Quirk has reached its limit) "No, this can't be happening. Have I reached my boundaries? I didn't know such a thing was even possible!"
