Quirk Bestowal[1] was the Quirk used by Yoichi Shigaraki.
After All For One forcibly transferred Power Stock to Yoichi, it merged with Quirk Bestowal, resulting in the creation of One For All.
Description#
This Quirk has no function other than to be given to someone else. To transfer this Quirk, the user has to pass it to another through DNA, such as by the recipient ingesting a strand of hair[2] or a drop of blood.[3] It can only be transferred if the user willingly chooses to pass it on, though the inheritor does not need to agree to it. As such, it is the only known Quirk that cannot be stolen by All For One.[4]
Unlike most other Quirks, which usually manifest before the age of four, Quirk Bestowal did not make itself known for most of Yoichi's life, leading to the false belief that he was Quirkless. According to All For One, Quirk Bestowal was so weak that his own Quirk didn't even recognize it as an ability, stating that it never fully formed due to Yoichi's weak constitution. As Quirk Factor types tend to run in families, Yoichi's Quirk Bestowal always had the ability to assimilate with the Quirks it came into contact with through transference, much like how his brother's Quirk could also take in multiple Quirks (though by directly and consciously stealing them). All For One confirmed this to be the case, stating that it absorbed and combined with Power Stock to make up for the strength it lacked, creating One For All.[4][5]
Quirk Bestowal has seemingly evolved to not only transfer itself, but anything part of it, as shown on two separate occasions by Izuku Midoriya. The first time, he transferred One For All's stockpiled power to Katsuki Bakugo during their fight against Nine, while the core essence of the Quirk remained inside of him.[6] The second time, he transferred the additional Quirks stored within One For All to Tomura Shigaraki.[7] Furthermore, depending on the user's intent, the transfer can be more harmful than helpful to the recipient, as seen when the Vestiges of One For All were forcibly transferred to Tomura, attacking the Villain from within.[8]
Usage#
Quirk Bestowal remained inactive for most of Yoichi's life. All For One initially believed that he had stolen his brother's Quirk when they were both too young to remember it. In truth, however, Yoichi's Quirk was an "unformed speck" that even All For One's Quirk couldn't detect. It turns out that when All For One foisted Power Stock onto his brother, Quirk Bestowal absorbed the Quirk to make up for the strength it lacked, leading to the creation of One For All. After All For One killed his brother in a possessive rage, Yoichi's blood splattered onto Toshitsugu Kudo, leading to him gaining the newly formed Quirk. Over time, both Kudo and All For One realized that Yoichi's will continued to live on in the form of One For All.[4][5]
All For One pursued Kudo and One For All in order to finally get his brother back.[9] However, Kudo made use of the transference ability and left the Quirk with his ally Bruce Lee.[10] This cycle then repeated itself for many years, with each user of One For All cultivating the Quirk in strength and then passing it on to a successor.[3] All For One tried stealing it from the fifth and sixth users, Daigoro Banjo and En Tayutai, but to his surprise, the Quirk refused to be taken and repelled his hand away.[11][5]
During their fight against Nine, Izuku was forced to transfer One For All to Katsuki, as they could only defeat the Villain with the power of the Quirk and their combined efforts. Despite this, All Might later discovered that Izuku still had One For All. The retired Hero theorized that Katsuki had lost consciousness before the transfer's completion, although he soon concluded that One For All itself chose to remain within Izuku, as he was willing to give the Quirk up to defeat Nine, even if it meant becoming Quirkless again.[6]
During the Final War, Izuku and the previous users of One For All came up with the plan to forcibly transfer their Quirks, and by extension, themselves, into Tomura in an effort to destroy the leaden core shielding his soul and break into his origin.[12] While it led to One For All's destruction, the plan succeeded, and thanks to it, Izuku was able to reach the source of Tomura's hatred.[13]
