Himura Family

ArticleSource revision

The Himura Family is a scattered family of former prestige.

Overview#

They began as village leaders, and maintained power after the agricultural revolution due to creating branch families. However, the rise of Meta Abilities spelled their doom, as they refused to "dilute" their blood by marrying Meta Ability users, especially heteromorphs. This caused them to become highly insular, marrying the distant relatives of branch families, causing their wealth and influence to wane. To remedy this, the heads of the Himura Family would start selling children off into marriages, resulting in the remaining branch families being scattered.

While there were only two main members of the family shown in the series, the Himuras seem to be genetically predisposed to manifesting ice-based Quirks. Additionally, all of Rei Himura's children manifested a frost-ability in their Quirks; Fuyumi and Natsuo obtaining Rei's own Frost Quirk, Shoto's Half-Cold Half-Hot containing half-ice, and Dabi's Blueflame manifesting ice briefly while in a near death state.

History#

Rei Himura, the daughter of a Himura family was proposed to marry Enji Todoroki, better known as the Flame Hero: Endeavor, as part of an arranged Quirk Marriage set up by her parents. Rei had the option to say no, but agreed to marry him so he would help her struggling family. Rei's father was especially interested in Enji's money and status, explaining how the Himura Family have a long and storied history while saying that it's only fitting for a Hero like Endeavor to take a Himura woman as his bride.

Despite the business-like relationship of their union, Rei and Enji had a good start to their marriage as they got to know each other; Enji genuinely respected Rei, and Rei hoped that if she kept smiling then everything would work out. They soon agreed to start a family of their own. However, Enji's obsession with surpassing All Might and worsening behavior ended up driving them apart, with Rei herself having to stay in a psychiatric ward at Fujitani Hospital for many years as a result of Enji's abuse.

Final War Arc#

While imprisoned in neighboring cells during the Final War, Geten revealed to Mr. Compress that he hailed from the Himura family, along with the family's propensity for selling off children to marry distant relatives. Compress remarks on Geten's meaning that Himura blood runs thick and wonders what Spinner would say about an elitist family prejudiced against heteromorphs. Geten says that as the generations pass, Quirks continue to grow and evolve with new powers laying dormant inside people's bodies, but their hearts never manage to evolve alongside them.[1]

Trivia#

  • The Himura's process of marrying familial relatives may be in reference to how aristocrats would often have cousins marry one another to maintain "racial purity" and keep wealth within the family. As a result, they often suffered from the ill-effects of inbreeding and were stigmatized against.
