The Shie Hassaikai Boss is the former leader of the Yakuza organization known as Shie Hassaikai.
Appearance#
He is an elderly looking man, with wrinkles on the face and graying hair. When he was the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, he wore a kuro montsuki, the most formal kimono of men, consisting of a black haori, dark gray Hakama, white Tabi, and sandals. This clothing signified the fact that he held onto the traditional values of the yakuza.
In the aftermath of the Final War, the Boss is awakened from his coma, having become far more skinny and now requiring a wheelchair to get around.
Personality#
Despite being the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, the Boss was a man of strong moral principles who respected the traditional values. Although with the age of Heroes, the power and influence of the Yakuza had been progressively diminishing, yet he has always refused to use cruel and criminal methods even if they helped to reinstate the Shie Hassaikai, deeply believing that the Yakuza's code of chivalry distinguished them from Villains.
The Boss also had a fatherly and nurturing side, having taken in an orphaned Kai Chisaki and raising him as his own. Even when Kai went against his moral obligations, lashing out and attacking innocent people, the Boss still thanked him for trying to uphold their honor. Despite the evident fact that Kai had grown into an immoral sociopath, the Boss still tried to lead him towards a more honorable course, though unfortunately to no avail, as Kai became more involved with drugs and black market dealings. The Boss also took in his granddaughter, Eri, when the latter was disowned by her mother when she was only a toddler.
As the Yakuza were continuing to be threatened by the presence of Heroes, the Boss came to solemnly accept that the Shie Hassaikai was nearing its end. However, he refused Kai's idea of reinstating the Yakuza through his plan to use Eri to create a Quirk-Destroying Drug, being very disturbed by his ward's lack of humanity and willingness to experiment on a child, telling Kai to leave if he won't follow their way of thinking. This would end up being the final straw however, with Kai putting the Boss into a coma, intending to carry out his plans unimpeded.[1]
Following the Final War, the Boss is awakened from his coma through advanced support items. While meeting Kai in prison, he tells the latter to stop calling him his boss as the Shie Hassaikai has officially been disbanded. The Boss lambasts Kai for straying from the path of humanity and for all the pain he caused Eri, assuring a tearful Kai that he will be there to admonish him until the day he dies.[2]
Synopsis#
History#
In the early days of Japan, The Boss led a Yakuza group known as the Shie Hassaikai, one of the many criminal organizations that ran Japan's criminal underworld. However, the Hassaikai, along with Yakuza in general, were drastically threatened with the emergence of Heroes and their reign officially ended when All Might became the country's Symbol of Peace. As a result, the Shie Hassaikai resorted to becoming thugs-for-hire and were deemed an endangered species, with its members barely scraping by to make a living.[3]
At some point, the Boss adopted an orphaned boy he met in the streets by the name of Kai Chisaki and raised him to be a Yakuza. However, Kai would often fall out of line and get into fights with rival gangs. While the Boss admonished him for his ruthless ways, he still thanked Kai for trying to protect their honor. Kai himself felt deeply indebted to the Boss for taking him in and wished to repay him by bringing the Shie Hassaikai back to its former glory.[4]
The Boss was eventually contacted by his daughter who left her child Eri with him when the girl's Quirk accidentally erased her husband from existence, claiming that Eri was a "cursed" child, her mother wanted nothing more to do with her and left the toddler with the Boss. The Boss found out that Eri's Quirk, whatever it was, didn't resemble anything on either side of her family and was the result of a rare genetic mutation. Since Eri had no control over her power and didn't know how to use it, the Boss left Eri in Kai's care due to their Quirks being similar; having the power to deconstruct things, and ordered his ward to find out more about Eri's Quirk. Through many experiments, which included testing Eri's power on mice and obtaining blood samples through surgery, Kai found out that Eri's Quirk wasn't vanishing or restoration, but rather the ability to Rewind the state of any living thing, a power that Kai deemed to be terrifying.
One day, the Boss confronted Kai over getting into a fight again, hearing that his opponent had been left in critical condition. Kai explained that he was just teaching a lesson to someone who had stepped on their turf, and was trying to save their plummeting reputation by making an example so that people will know of the Shie Hassaikai's strength. The Boss then revealed that he found out Kai had started a new business without his approval and had warned him not to get involved with drugs. The Boss knew that Kai was only trying to thank him for taking him in, but still expressed his disappointment, telling Kai that he was out of line and not to stray from the path that he laid before him. Kai remained unconvinced though, believing that obsolete Yakuza ideals won't help save the organization and was frustrated that the Boss wouldn't understand him.
Kai became adamant with reviving the Shie Hassaikai no matter what and started a new plan. Utilizing the power of Eri's Rewind, he intended to create a drug capable of destroying someone's Quirk. First, he would take an incomplete sample of the drug and present it to the black market, knowing that Villains would jump at the opportunity to depower Heroes. Once the product was made known, Kai would sell the finished drug at a high price and a while later, he would sell a serum capable of reverting the drug's effect and restoring Quirks to the Heroes. With the Quirk-Destroying Drug in the hands of the Villains, the antidote in the hands of the Heroes, and Eri in the middle, Kai planned to monopolize the black market and effectively take control of Japan's criminal underworld, believing that with this, the Shie Hassaikai could finally rise from the ashes.
However, the Boss refused to even consider Kai's plan, being visibly disturbed by his willingness to experiment on Eri and asking him if he had completely lost his humanity. The Boss finally told Kai that if he was so set on going against their ideals, he had no place in the Hassaikai. Angry, Kai took action and used his Overhaul Quirk to put the Boss into a coma. Believing that he owes the old man everything and seething that the Heroes threatened to wipe them all out, Kai would carry on with his plans, intending to awaken the Boss once he had finished his operations and revived the Shie Hassaikai.[1]
Shie Hassaikai Arc#
Even after the Boss was made bed-ridden by his own protégé, Kai still carried the Boss in his mind, believing that everything he was doing was for him and would visit him at his bedside. Prior to the Shie Hassaikai Raid, sensing the incoming Heroes, Kai visited the Boss and apologized, saying that things would get pretty loud.
The Shie Hassaikai would end up being defeated by the Heroes, who had learned about Kai's plan to destroy Quirks and that Eri was the source of the drugs. Once the raid was finished, all members of the Hassaikai were arrested, Eri was rescued, and the authorities found the Boss still in comatose. While Kai was arrested, his transport would be intervened by the League of Villains, who took both the remaining Quirk-Destroying Drugs and also destroyed Kai's arms, and with them, the ability to use his Quirk. Realizing that he now has no way to awaken the Boss from his coma, Kai screamed in panic and anguish as the Shie Hassaikai crumbled around him.[5]
Because of the Boss being left in a coma, Eri had no remaining relatives to take her in, causing her to be adopted by the staff at U.A. High School. However, the girl still suffered from the physical and psychological torture inflicted on her by Kai, with it taking several weeks for Eri to simply smile for the first time, and a much longer process before she could start living as a normal and happy child.
Dark Hero Arc#
Following the Paranormal Liberation War, Kai escaped from Tartarus thanks to a prison break caused by All For One and Tomura Shigaraki. Now a shadow of his former self, a rattled and powerless Kai continues to murmur the words "Boss", wishing to reunite with his leader and father figure no matter what. Being rescued by Lady Nagant, Kai agreed to identify Izuku Midoriya, the one who foiled his plans, for her in exchange to be taken to the Boss, wishing to apologize to him.[6]
Things would go awry however when Lady Nagant was defeated by Izuku, and nearly killed when All For One activated a self-detonation Quirk he secretly gave her in case she changed her mind about helping him. After being apprehended by Endeavor, Kai screamed and cried for Lady Nagant to uphold her end of the deal, wanting to see the Boss. Hearing his pleas, Izuku agreed to uphold Kai's request if he apologized to Eri as well.[7]
Epilogue Arc#
Once the Final War had finally ended, the Boss was awakened from his coma thanks to advanced support items and filled in on everything that had happened. Now emaciated from his time in comatose and bound to a wheelchair, the Boss visits Kai in prison, remarking on the sorry state he is in while telling him that he is no longer his boss and that the Shie Hassaikai is gone and done. The Boss lambasts Kai for straying from the path of humanity, when he did everything he could to try and lead him the right way, assuming that Hari Kurono never once talked back to him or criticized his ways. Crying and sobbing, Kai apologizes, but the Boss says that it's too little too late, and that it's Eri who deserves a lifetime of his apologies. The Boss tells Kai that Eri will likely go on to forget all about him, but warns him never to dare forget everything he put her through. The Boss finishes by assuring Kai that he will be taking him to task until the day he goes to hell.[2]
Relationships#
Unnamed Daughter#
The Boss had an unnamed daughter who started a family of her own. When their infant child, Eri, accidentally rewound her husband out of existence, his daughter labelled Eri as a cursed child and left her with her father. Not much else is known about their relationship, though the Boss seemed to berate his daughter for abandoning her own child, regarding her as a fool.
Eri#
Eri is the Boss' granddaughter, whom he adopted when she was a toddler after she accidentally rewound her father out of existence. Aware that Eri possessed a variant Quirk that was unlike anything from her family, the Boss entrusted her with his ward, Kai, asking him to research and discover more about her Quirk. When Kai proposed a plan to create a Quirk-Destroying drug from Eri's blood and cells, the Boss was clearly horrified and refused for him to go ahead with it, telling him that Eri was only a child. His decision to entrust Kai with Eri would ultimately be his biggest mistake as upon learning of the Quirk erasing properties in her blood, Kai forced the Boss into a coma so he could carry out his barbaric plan unimpeded. While visiting Kai in prison after being awakened from his coma, the Boss told Kai that it was Eri who deserved his apologies, assuring Kai that he would never let him forget all the pain he put her through.
Shortly after waking up from his coma, the Boss attended a meeting with Eri's caregivers at U.A. High. Wanting his granddaughter to be free of her traumatic past with the Hassaikai, he allowed the girl to be adopted by Shino Sosaki.[8]
Kai Chisaki#
The Boss found Kai as an orphan and took him in, caring for the boy and choosing to raise him as a Yakuza. However, Kai's ruthless nature often drove a wedge in their relationship, as Kai began to venture into drugs and black market dealings, despite the Boss wishing him to uphold the Shie Hassaikai's morals and ideals. Despite this, Kai still cared for his Boss and saw him as his father figure, affectionately referring to him as "Pops" and being the only person Kai has shown genuine empathy towards.
Their clash in ideals reached its peak when Kai proposed an abhorrent plan to use the Boss' granddaughter, Eri, to create a Quirk-Destroying Drug to sell on the black market, intending to use it to revive the Shie Hassaikai. The Boss was clearly horrified by Kai's lack of humanity and left him with a choice, to either abandon his plan or leave. Angered, Kai used his Quirk to put the Boss into a coma, crowning himself as the new leader of the Shie Hassaikai and intending to awaken him once he fulfilled his mission. A decision that Kai would live to regret, as he would eventually be defeated by the Heroes and lose everything he worked hard for, as well as lose his arms and Quirk to the League of Villains who betrayed him. Once awakened from his coma, the Boss visited Kai in prison, admonishing him for ignoring all his warnings and straying from the path of humanity, telling Kai that the Shie Hassaikai is finished and that he will be there to chew him out until the day he dies.
Hari Kurono#
Not much is known about their relationship, though it is said that the Boss raised Hari alongside Kai. After being awoken from his coma, the Boss correctly assumed that Hari never once stood up to Kai or intervened with his plans.
Abilities#
Authority: As the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, the Boss held command over the entire Yakuza group, with most of its members following Kai's orders out of loyalty to their original leader.
