Garvey is a Villain from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. He is responsible for the death of Oboro Shirakumo.
He serves as the main antagonist of the School Days Arc.
Appearance#
Garvey is a giant toad that stands at a height of 10 meters on his hind legs. He has a round, large, chunky, olive-green body shape. His eyes are small, round, blank and white. He possesses numerous warts that grow on his back, which is where he stores the attacks he devours with his Quirk. He also has a short, stubby tail, reminiscent of the ones real frogs have when growing from a tadpole into adulthood. Due to being on Trigger, Garvey's tongue is discolored at the tip.
In the anime, Garvey's characteristics as a toad are pushed much further. He now has a tan underbelly that starts at his bottom lip, more defined segmentation across his body, slightly muscular limbs, and eyes that bulge slightly outward.
Personality#
As a Villain that acts as a wild kaiju, Garvey doesn't appear to possess any distinct personality traits, instead purely acting on a base-level instinct to attack those around him, similar to real toads.
History#
School Days Arc#
During Shota Aizawa's time as a U.A. High School student, specifically during his Hero Work-Studies, Garvey appears in Tasomiya Ward, causing mayhem, chaos, and panic while under the influence of the Quirk-enhancing Trigger drug. The Hero Group Buster Union, alongside Shota's schoolmates Hizashi Yamada and Sensoji, try to attack Garvey. However, their Quirks are absorbed and released back at them by his own Quirk, Stock, causing a massive explosion that created extreme destruction and damage.
Garvey eventually arrives at the area Shota and his friend, Oboro Shirakumo, are evacuating. His Purple Highness arrives and engages in battle with the Villain, but the giant animal unleashes a Voice attack from Hizashi's Quirk directly towards the Hero, much to Shota's surprise. Garvey then unleashes an attack from Sensoji's Blast Quirk and defeats His Purple Highness with ease and causing even further destruction. At the same time, Oboro was crushed by falling debris while saving children from being crushed, killing him as a result.[1]
As it starts to rain, Shota continues his fight with Garvey, injuring his eye and launching debris into his face. Garvey decides to end Shota once and for all, and releases all the Quirks he has stored up. However, this is the moment Shota was waiting for; using both his Quirk and his Capturing Weapon, he manages to feed Garvey the Quirks, causing them to explode inside of him, leaving him unconscious. The giant toad monster is later successfully arrested, as Shota learns that Oboro died in the attack.[2]
Synopsis#
Paranormal Liberation War Arc#
During the raid at Jaku General Hospital, Kyudai Garaki reveals to Hizashi that he and All For One were behind Garvey's attack, and that instead of Oboro being the casualty, it was actually meant for them to acquire Shota's Erasure Quirk.[3]
Abilities#
Great Size: Garvey is shown to stand a giant size, he was big and strong enough to wreck buildings and houses with sheer size and weight alone. It is unknown how much of his size was effected by him being on Trigger.
Quirk#
Stock: Garvey's Quirk grants him the ability to absorb attacks directed at him, store them into the lumps on his back, and willingly redirect the absorbed attacks towards the opposite direction whenever he wants.[1] He was able to absorb offensive attacks from other Quirks, such as plenty of unnamed beam-based abilities, Hizashi’s Voice attack, and Sensoji’s Blast attack.

Trivia#
- Garvey's name, appearance, and Quirk may be a reference to the video game character, Kirby.
- According to Garvey's Volume 9 extra page:
- Hideyuki Furuhashi states that Garvey's ability to use different Quirk attacks made him an opponent that only Shota could deal with, but due to his massive size, was still quite a challenge for him.
- Betten Court reveals that Garvey was initially based off a Surinam toad (a flat flounder-like toad that has similar lumps on its back), but he found the creature to be more disgusting than he anticipated, leading to him abandoning this inspiration.
- It's implied he was referred to as simply the Lump Villain during development.
- Other than Gigantomachia, Garvey is the earliest known associate of All For One and Kyudai Garaki in the timeline.
