Glass Sky is the twentieth episode of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime and the seventh episode of the second season.

Summary#

On a sunny afternoon, a robbery is taking place in Tasomiya, inside an office building on the fourth floor. Emergency services and the Police Force are quickly dispatched, and the Smoke Villain who orchestrated the robbery hears the loudening police sirens.

As the criminal starts to angrily interrogate the tied-up office staff on who alerted the authorities, Midnight crashes through the building and orders him to halt, announcing that Team Purple Revolution is here to help as Loud Cloud flies in on his Cloud.

The Villain wastes no time in dealing with the Heroes-in-training as he throws an entire office setup at the two students. Although Midnight and Loud Cloud easily parry the flying objects, the criminal blasts a large volume of Smoke throughout the floor, blocking their sight and irritating their eyes. The robber then jumps through the window with the stolen money in his arms, before landing on the street and attempting to escape on foot.

Loud Cloud creates another Cloud and hops on it in preparation to go after the man and asks Midnight to join in on the chase. The girl quickly stops him, telling the boy that they should prioritize rescuing the civilians first, especially since they don't know if the smoke is poisonous. Loud Cloud agrees and stays to help but tells Eraser Head through his earpiece to go after the Smoke Villain in their stead.

Eraser Head quickly catches up and binds the thief's arm using his Capturing Weapon, but he quickly blasts a cloud of Smoke and blinds the boy. The Villain then retaliates by throwing the safe straight at Eraser Head, but it is intercepted and kicked away by His Purple Highness. The Villain still manages to get away, as police cars begin to chase him down. Eraser Head wants to keep going after the criminal, but His Purple Highness tells him to halt, explaining that it's the Police Force's problem now, and that they should head back to the office building.

Back at said building, one of the officers tells his staff to put a BOLO on the Smoke Villain and contact some local Heroes for assistance. He adds that his team shouldn't make a move on their own if they catch him, as they need a Hero's assistance to deal with the Villain. Midnight then jumps down from the building and apologizes to her boss from not assisting him and Eraser Head, while Loud Cloud shuttles down the civilians with his Cloud.

His Purple Highness assures that her and Loud Cloud's judgment was right in regard to prioritizing civilian safety over taking down the Villain, as he believes if Heroes just solely focused on booking criminals and neglected everything else, then they're nothing more than bounty hunters.

The flashy man says focusing on keeping people safe is what makes a Hero, and praises Midnight for keeping that in mind above all else. He then turns to Loud Cloud, complimenting him on his initiative and not wasting any time in taking action. Although he believes his sense of judgment is spotty, His Purple Highness tells the boy that it will easily improve with experience.

The man, however, doesn't have any positives to relay to Eraser Head's work, and flamboyantly declares that he failed today. His Purple Highness asks the student if he knows why, with Eraser Head assuming it's because he couldn't react to the Smoke Villain in time, allowing the robber to blind him with his smoke and get away. His boss says that it's not for that reason, and instead it's because of how he presents himself, saying that he looks like a person who found out somebody had just died.

His Purple Highness then obsessively tells the student that Heroes are supposed to be pillars that inspire hope to everyday people going through turmoil, so being tense all the time goes against that notion. The man, while putting on another vibrant display, tells Eraser Head to smile more and trust in whatever gives the student strength on the inside, with the promise that whatever lies in his core will blossom when the time comes. His Purple Highness then asks Eraser Head to try giving a smile, though he is less than pleased at the forced, uncomfortable grin that the student ended up making.

In the locker room at the Purple Revolution Agency, Shota vents to Oboro about his presentation issues while the latter showers, with him not understanding where he would get the motivation to smile after letting a Villain get away. Oboro thinks His Purple Highness was trying to say that Shota should keep calm under pressure, so things like mistakes on the job won't rattle him and allow his friend keep things light. Shota tells Oboro that doesn't think "keeping things light" is his style, before he hears his phone ringing constantly from text notifications courtesy of Nemuri.

Oboro asks if its anything serious, but Shota says it's just endless pictures of Sushi. The boy then starts getting engrossed at the photos before laughing, as Oboro pops out of the shower and says that his friend's current face and attitude is just what he needs. Shota's mood immediately sours upon seeing Oboro naked again, but the other student gleefully says he's covered up and censors his crotch with a Cloud.

A few days later, the Smoke Villain robs a bank in Tasomiya and quickly makes off into the open road, leaving a trail of Smoke behind him to get the two pursuing staff members off his tail. At the other end of the road is Eraser Head running towards him, with the Villain quickly retaliating by sending a cloud of Smoke to the blind the boy like before.

However, Eraser Head quickly hops on a car and leaps towards the Villain, as he is unfazed by the attack due to the pair of goggles he's now wearing. Back in the locker room, after trying to figure out ideas on how he would approach the Smoke Villain again, Oboro loaned his goggles to Shota so he could deal with the smoke and allow him to actually use his Quirk.

After getting closer, Eraser Head uses Erasure on the Smoke Villain, stopping more Smoke from spilling into the air. The boy then snags the Villain's arm with the Capturing Weapon once more, but the Villain easily overpowers and puts Eraser Head on the ropes with raw strength. The Hero then calls for Loud Cloud, who jumps from the building above and starts diving down on one of his Clouds.

Eraser Head then wraps the Smoke Villain's leg while he's distracted by Loud Cloud, as the other boy flies down and smacks the criminal on the head with his staff. The Smoke Villain then plummets to the ground, as Eraser Head fully secures their opponent.

The Police Force, as well as His Purple Highness and Midnight, soon catch up to place the Villain in custody. His Purple Highness compliments the boys' stellar teamwork, as the civilians watching nearby chime in with their own positive comments. On their boss' recommendation, Loud Cloud gives them a warm smile, while Eraser Head once again struggles to do the same. His Purple Highness grills Shota for failing to present himself properly, but thankfully the citizens just brush it off and begin laughing at the Hero's outburst.

After some time, the fall semester at U.A. High School starts up. Once again, Classes 2-A and 2-B are working together outside on combat training. Hizashi notices Shota wearing the goggles Oboro leant him, and wonders if he and their other friend are trying to match styles. Oboro, now with a new pair of the same goggles, comes in and confirms Hizashi's assumption, on the grounds that they're now working as a duo.

Sensoji then angrily butts in, accusing Eraser Head of ripping off his costume addition idea, as he started wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes from the light produced by his Blast Quirk. Hizashi then pipes up and says that Sensoji has no right to claim that considering he got the idea to use sunglasses from looking at his own pair during their Work-Study at the same agency.

Eventually, Class 2-A's teacher prepares to draw students into their two-on-two team battles. Oboro asks the man if the groups can be decided based on Work-Study pairings, which the teacher supports while reminding everyone to treat the exercise like a real scenario. Hizashi asks him if he can be paired with someone other than Sensoji due to the other boy's attitude problems, but the instructor just tells him to deal with it now.

Once the lesson starts, the teacher sees Sensoji and Hizashi pair well in combat with their respective Blast and Voice Quirks, despite being at odds with each other. He notes how flashy and powerful the two abilities are, and figures most real Villains would have a tough time getting to them. At the same time, he's grabbed by Oboro and Shota's less brutal and more technical combat methodology, making them tricky to deal with in their own right.

Sensoji then eggs Shota into fighting him, with him proposing that the other student ditch the goggles if he loses since they bother him so much. Shota says he doesn't care and tries to brush it off, though Oboro accepts the challenge for him, and says Sensoji has to dump his sunglasses if he loses, with Hizashi nervously wondering if it will apply to him.

Sensoji brashly tells Hizashi to stay out of the fight, gloating that he's strong enough to take both of the other boys down on his own. The large student than rushes down and unleashes a spread of Blasts in their direction, as Oboro and Shota easily dodge. Sensoji then targets Oboro, who easily flies away and dodges on top of a Cloud, before swinging by and using his Cloud Cover move, spawning a cloud on top of the student's face and blinding him.

Oboro then drops his gourd on the street, which starts spawning a flurry of clouds that begin to surround Sensoji, as a speaker inside of it asks him to figure out where his opponents are. Sensoji isn't pleased with their gimmicky fighting style and says he doesn't have to search for the two if he just blows all the Clouds away. As he prepares to retaliate, Shota uses Erasure on Sensoji after sneaking in from behind, and Oboro flies in from the front and knocks the other student into the pavement with his staff.

Sensoji starts ranting that the fight isn't over, but Shota, after picking up the other boy's sunglasses, tiredly tells the boy to drop it and accept his loss, especially considering he was outmatched numbers-wise. Shota even says he doesn't have to toss his sunglasses, since he never cared about the wager to begin with.

Sensoji angrily walks up and snatches the sunglasses from Shota, before immediately flinging them on the ground and crushing the accessory with his boot, saying that he didn't actually lose and that he never needed the glasses. Sensoji then storms off while Class 2-A's teacher tries to reign him back in, though the older man doesn't forget to commend Oboro and Shota on their teamwork and Quirk usage.

After training, the three boys are eating lunch on the roof again, with Hizashi wearing another pair of Oboro's glasses, saying that he's going to be needing these after "losing" his trademark sunglasses. Shota asks him why he has a pair suddenly, with Hizashi and Oboro cheering that everyone in their group has to match if they're going to be working as a trio of Heroes.

Hizashi then informs the two that he's going to be transferring to the Purple Revolution Agency soon, hence the trio comment, with Shota noting how sudden the decision is. Oboro says Shota should be thinking out Hizashi's transfer in the long term, noting that His Purple Highness loves to bring on work fresh talent to the bone so they can be more than prepared for independent Hero work.

As such, Oboro suggests that once all three of them graduate from U.A., they're going to start an independent Hero agency together. He believes that with the three of them working together, they can enhance their strengths and cover their weaknesses Quirk and personality wise, allowing them to face any odds they come across.

However, Shota thinks his lack of initiative and poor results in one-on-one combat, so believes it wouldn't be appropriate to call himself a Hero if it's essentially mandatory to work with others. Oboro puts a positive spin on it as always, believe that it just means Shota is more suited for teamwork. He and Hizashi then suggest that they'll focus on backing Shota up on the field, while he takes care of all the hard, detail-oriented stuff.

Shota isn't thrilled on that "compromise", and reminds him that he never actually agreed on the agency idea, though his friends think he'll warm up to it with time. Nemuri then shows up, and after gushing for a bit at the boys' youthful bickering, she shows Shota more pics of Sushi, with Hizashi noting the sudden change in his gloomy friend's demeanor.

Oboro, with a light blush on his cheeks, approaches Nemuri with the offer of becoming a Hero quartet, with the other boys calling out the sudden change. Unfortunately, Nemuri shoots down the offer, saying she prefers to have the independent agency of her dreams once she graduates: a castle full of hot boys tending to all her needs like a queen. Oboro is enamored by her ideal agency and blissfully considers working for her instead, with Hizashi questioning if his original plan is on the chopping block.

As Nemuri inquires and tries out a pair of the goggles the boys are wearing, Shota walks over to the railing while leaving his friends to have fun on their own. Shota then looks down and takes in the afternoon breeze, as he looks back to the three goofing around and smiles.

At first, Shota doubted he would get anywhere in life, but looking at things now, with how much things have changed for him as of recent, he can't help but feel he might get carried away. As the wind picks up, Shota looks to the open sky and puts on his goggles, feeling that this the bluest sky he's ever seen in his life.

One week later, during a particularly rainy day, an emergency call is heard reporting a violent Villain attack in Tamosiya Ward. A giant toad-shaped kaiju slowly rampages through the streets, leaving wide-spread destruction in his wake. The call reports that His Purple Highness and one of his trainees were on the scene to help, but the Villain fought back and wounded them, so desperately call for backup.

His Purple Highness is unconscious, injured on a pile of debris, and on the floor nearby are one of Oboro's goggles, broken.

Anime & Manga Differences#

  • The anime slightly extends the Smoke Villain's interaction with the hostages.
  • In the anime, the first confrontation with the Smoke Villain took place much farther from the office building, instead of close to it like in the manga. As such, after he gets away, its followed by a scene of His Purple Highness telling Eraser Head to stop chasing the Villain so they can both head back to the crime scene.
  • The anime also shows several police cars chasing the Villain as he escapes.
  • In the anime, the Robber Villain throws an entire office setup at Oboro and Nemuri before using his Quirk to create a smokescreen to escape.
  • When he uses his Quirk against them, in the anime, the Robber Villain uses the antenna on his head to expel smoke, while in the manga he expels smoke from the holes in his head and shoulders.
  • After His Purple Highness tells Eraser Head to smile more, the anime shows him trying it out on the former's command and failing. In the manga, this only happens after the second fight with the Smoke Villain.
  • After Oboro comes out of the shower, the anime shows Shota being disgusted and the other boy covering himself with a Cloud.
  • The anime extends the second fight with the Smoke Villain and shows Eraser Head using his Capturing Weapon throughout the entire battle.
  • In the anime, the Smoke Villain attacked a bank in his second robbery, while it wasn't specified where he stole the money from in the manga.
  • In the anime, Oboro defeats the Smoke Villain by striking him head-on with his quarterstaff while Shota is holding the villain with his capturing weapon. In the manga, Oboro strikes the Smoke villain on the back of the head while he is distracted attacking Shota.
  • When Hizashi, Nemuri, and Oboro are playing with the goggles, their comments are audible in the anime.
  • Garvey, albeit in silhouette, is shown a bit earlier than his introduction in the manga.
