Extra Content from Volume 39.
U.A. Villain Infiltrators#
These are two of All For One's supporters, mixed into the crowd of refugees at U.A.
They first appeared in volumes 35 and 37.
Masegaki Primary School Students#
These are the kids from Masegaki Elementary School. They first showed up during the provisional license makeup course in volume 18.
I initially based this one kid on a particular non-Japanese child I saw a long time ago, but now the memory's so hazy, I'm barely sure that such a person existed.
Ochaco and Himiko Sketches#
Before tackling the chapter itself, I sit down and do a bunch of doodles like these to hammer out the sort of visuals I'm aiming for. It's a way to nail down the right imagery. Looks like Ochaco's had a haircut, huh?
The Supplement#
How did the reporter lady know about "the one girl" down there? Because she has access to "the snazziest camera" (see volume 38). Thank you to whoever created that snazziest camera.
This is supposed to be a "The Supplement" page, yet the doodles take up a disproportionate chunk of real estate. Think of it as the toy that comes with a fast-food meal (shokugan, in Japanese). Ah, speaking of shokugan, "Fast Food Toy Hero: SHOCK GUN" would be a badass hero. Yeah, so cool.
The Armored All Might & Hercules#
All Might basically never spends money on himself, but he poured almost his entire fortune into developing these two pieces of tech. Quite frankly, it took a disgusting amount of money to create them.
And since it was such a rush delivery, this gear never went through proper testing. Basically, safety is far from guaranteed when using this crazy armor and insane car.
All Might Trivia#
He's making an effort to say mean, provocative things.
Toshinori: Desperate to play it cool, huh? You pathetic dirtbag ·
Rough Sketches from designing Armored All Might#
Antennae
Steel cape
Close in size/ shape to Muscle Form. All Might's idealized, fantasy form.
Pitch-black (not much wiggle room in terms of color design)
The Editor Imamura#
More observant readers may have noticed that recent chapters have had somewhat low page counts. This is because my drawing hand is slowing down year by year, yet the schedule remains in explosively nonstop, full-throttle bonanza mode. As such, the mighty people in the editorial department have adjusted the page count to ensure that MHA can keep running. I totally acknowledge that this problem is 100 percent my fault, yet I often find myself thinking, "Ugh, if only I had more pages!" How disgustingly self-centered is that, I ask you? Human nature is horrifying.
So, the page count for each chapter is decided in advance, and I was told that No. 395: Built upon the Joy of Others, would be 13 pages long. But in the end, it wound up being 15 pages. Ultimately, this was thanks to my editor, Imamura. My initial draft came out to 13 pages, as requested, but in that state, the chapter felt as if it were stuffed in too tight a casing, without enough pages. I wonder if I could've made the 13-page version work, if only I were better at this? In any case, there was so little time, and Imamura checked it over without delay. After reading the draft, he fell into silence for a moment before saying:
"Why don't you add another two pages?"
Now, mind you-it's basically taboo for an editor to personally decide to increase the page count. We're talking about a magazine, after all. Not to mention, Imamura is a relatively young editor. "Can such a thing even be done?!" I asked, my eyes wide and white with fear and confusion. Imamura paused and stared back at me with black eyes devoid of any light before replying.
"I will get in trouble. That's all. This current version is decent, but I want us to make it even better. In exchange for me putting myself out on a limb, you just be sure to get it done by the deadline, because it'll be no laughing matter if, in the end, you can't produce two more polished pages. Do we have an understanding, Horikoshi?"
Those eyes... Like a pair of black holes. Pitch-black chasms. Undiluted darkness.
And thus, No. 395 wound up being 15 pages long.
To make a long story short, MHA would not exist without the tireless efforts of Imamura, the editorial department, and everyone else who takes the matter very seriously and goes to great lengths to make the series as good as it can be.
And to all those who are about to emerge into society as working adults, know that my way of going about things really does impose on others in a bad way. Be sure to honor your deadlines, lest you find yourself staring into a pair of darkened, abyssal eye sockets...
Sincerely,
Horikoshi-a man who never once managed to turn in his summer homework by the due date, and who from that point on knew that he would never amount to a functional adult in society
The My Apology Academia#
Looks like we're doing another character popularity poll! When I was talking about the results of the previous one a couple volumes ago, I wrote, "This very well may be the final popularity poll," and at the time, I really did believe that to be the case.
So I'd like to take this chance to apologize to everyone who made a special effort to vote in that one specifically because they thought it would be the final one ·
The next poll's coming up, so I hope you'll send in a vote.
Izuku: Please and thank you!
Minoru: Let’s hope there’s a screwup where every vote is miscounted, and they all go to me ·
