U.A. High School#
Class 1-A#
Izuku Midoriya#
Hitoshi claimed to be jealous of Izuku's Quirk as it gives him combat efficiency. On the other hand, Izuku understands Hitoshi's situation as he himself was also considered unfavorable due to having no Quirk. Before their battle in the U.A. Sports Festival, Hitoshi and Izuku were hostile to each other, but after their battle, Hitoshi seems to have gained respect for Izuku, telling him not to lose too pitifully while Izuku respects Hitoshi's goal to enter the Department of Heroics.
They come across each other once again, where Izuku reacts friendly to him, though Hitoshi ignores his greeting. Later, during the preparations for the U.A. School Festival, Hitoshi stumbles upon a conversation between several Class 1-A members, including Izuku, where the topic of Hitoshi and his Brainwashing comes up. Izuku starts to talk about all the great uses for his Quirk as a Hero, leading Hitoshi to develop a new sense of respect and admiration for him, hearing someone else feel the same way about his Quirk. He decides in order to pay him back, he has to keep working hard to reach him on the same level first.[1]
The two bump into each other again, where Izuku is surprised after it is revealed that Hitoshi would play a role in a training exercise in the Department of Heroics.[2] The two soon learned they would fight again in the Joint Training Battle.[3]
However, despite his previous cold attitude, Hitoshi was actually excited to fight Izuku again. When Izuku’s power goes out of control during their clash in the fifth round, Hitoshi tries to stop its overflow with Ochaco Uraraka’s help. Hitoshi proceeds to take off his Artificial Vocal Cords, telling Izuku, from his heart, "let's fight!", to which Izuku accepts and gets brainwashed, causing his power overflow to cease.[4]
Thanks to that, Izuku manages to return to normal and the round continues. He confronts Hitoshi and manages to capture him while the rest of his team defeats the remaining Class 1-B members, winning the match. In the aftermath, Izuku thanks him and Ochaco for saving him, where he also clarifies to Hitoshi that his power going out of control wasn't faked when he seemingly reacted in anger after Izuku temporarily utilized the power again in their fight; Hitoshi thinks to himself how he knew the truth already and was just trying to provoke him to respond, surprised Izuku was worried about that.
Katsuki Bakugo#
Due to Katsuki's attitude towards non-Class 1-A students, Hitoshi misinterpreted the Department of Heroics as arrogant people.[5] Although later he does not interpolate Katsuki's behavior to the rest of Class 1-A students.
Months later, they meet again during the Joint Training Battle, but Hitoshi no longer seems to attach importance to Katsuki's harsh attitude. He even recognizes that Katsuki is right when he describes him as a deadweight for his lack of combat experience.[3]
Mashirao Ojiro#
Hitoshi may not like Mashirao, as he called him a "monkey" when attempting to provoke Izuku into attacking him. Hitoshi brainwashed Mashirao into teaming up with him in the Cavalry Battle. After being brainwashed by Hitoshi, Mashirao begins to dislike Hitoshi and warned Izuku to be careful in his fight with him. Hitoshi returned this feeling as he claimed Mashirao's decision to resigns from the tournament event to save his dignity, was very foolish in his opinion. However, later on during the preparations for the Cultural Festival, he overhears a conversation between Izuku and Mashirao, learning that Mashirao bears no ill will over the events of the Sports Festival, causing him to feel slightly guilty.[1]
He was pleased to hear that the latter will be helping them draw in All For One with his improved Quirk.[6]
Denki Kaminari#
Hitoshi teamed up with Denki during the first round of the Joint Training Battle. Despite his distant and cold attitude, Denki tries to strengthen ties with him, even defending Hitoshi when Katsuki describes him as a deadweight for the exercise due to his lack of experience.[3]
After the initial clash with the 1-B team, Hitoshi is well aware that his inexperience in battle was hindering his team's progress, and he apologizes for his slowness in capturing Jurota Shishida. Denki however points out that he was able to stop Jurota, avoiding the total defeat of the 1-A team. Denki tells Hitoshi that he likes him and that he's rooting for him to become a great hero someday.[7]
Denki also comments on Hitoshi's appearance, saying that he has the face of a popular guy, implying that Denki thinks Hitoshi is good looking.
Tsuyu Asui#
Hitoshi teamed up with Tsuyu, during the first round of the Joint Training Battle. After the initial clash with the Class 1-B team, Hitoshi apologizes for his lack of battle readiness but Tsuyu replies that was her fault because she should've come up with a better plan to keep him off the front lines.
After winning the round, Tsuyu recognizes Hitoshi's combat ability and strength, praising him and asking him to forget what he said before about being behind. Hitoshi responds to Tsuyu's praise by saying he still has much to improve.
Class 1-B#
Neito Monoma#
Upon taking a first glance at the hero-in-training, Neito took an immediate liking to Hitoshi due to the latter's antagonizing of Class 1-A. Neito was happy that Hitoshi was willing to work on a team with him.[3]
Hitoshi seems to tolerate Neito’s obsession with toppling Class 1-A, though he does feel slightly exasperated at the thought of potentially being his classmate.[1] Neito expresses empathy for Hitoshi since both of them grew up being derided for having Quirks deemed unsuitable for becoming a hero, though Hitoshi disagrees with his line of thinking that people in their position have to sometimes do something "villainous" to stand out.[8]
Faculty#
Eraser Head#
Eraser Head is Class 1-A's teacher who, because of the similarities in their Quirks’ lack of real combat efficiency, has taken note of Hitoshi during the Sports Festival and later decided to mentor him. The teacher beginning to pass on his Capturing Weapon techniques to Hitoshi to increase his battle efficiency, training him so that he may transfer into the Hero Course. Hitoshi eventually masters this technique, and successfully gets accepted due to his help.[3]
Because of Aizawa, Hitoshi has gradually improved his power, something that he initially did not intend.[6]
